Really appreciate Matt's work. Need to digest and react. My initial reaction is damn, that's a long list and everyone made it. We ain't getting Saban or Urban..... I said my piece on Greg roman. I, like Mick, tried a simple ChatGPT query, so I'll react to that. It went for fit rather than, like, a good coach. Must be stuff floating on the interwebs. It's top ten interview candidates are:
1. Pep Hamilton. Could see Luck doing something like that. He's at Maryland as their OC. Maryland is Big Integer middling. Locksley will be fired any day now, so maybe he is the interim soon and/or easily available. (Easily available is not the best criterion for hiring a coach.)
2. Jason Garrett. Lost to Taylor the last search, which isn't dispositive. On TV every Sunday, eh.
3. Coach Ken. First met the guy at USNA on I-Day 2012. He was great once. Think his time has passed. Spartans suck basically.
4. Chris Petersen. Sure if he leaves the comfort of TV after so many years into a completely new industry. Feels 20 years too late.
5. Kliff Kingsbury. Can we offer a ton of cash to be the OC? His HC record is 28-37-1 across 4 seasons in the NFL. A younger Frank Reich maybe. I do like the spectacular success or complete disaster, nothing in between, vibe.
6. Derek Mason. Stanford/Vandy retread. The dude is 31-71. Winners win everywhere. That's not it.
7. Tavita.
8. Troy Walters. Been with the Bengals six seasons. Bill Walsh came from the Bengals. That's a non-sequitur for those watching from home.
9. Dave Clawson. No. Thank you.
10. Andy Thompson. GPT's answer when I asked if it was serious. "Internal candidate already in the Stanford system, could offer continuity and institutional knowledge." That is exactly what we do not need.
Shoot. I miss Paul Johnson. I think his daughter lives in Sedona now. Close-ish. Why not?
Just get the dude from Tulane already, before he's at LSU or Florida.

Funny stuff! Appreciate the jocularity
Nothing to add other than a side bar that 95% of the folks on this list would be completely unavailable and uninterested in us but for the tremendous work of Condi Rice et.al. that in a desperate Cardinal moment, shoehorned us into the ACC. Once again, Kudos to that team.

Quick question. Let’s say you are one of the coaches on that list. Stanford comes calling. Why do you take the job? Or, what could the school do to get you to take the job? I can’t help but think that the only thing that would get a large share of the coaches on the list to come is a big fat pile of cash that’s probably not worth it.

Job security. You can go a combination of 7-5, 6-6 and 5-7 over eight years and keep your job. Anywhere else you’d be sent to the curb after four years.

Amazing weather. Motivated, intelligent student-athletes. Being surrounded by high-performing coaches in other sports. Alumni networking. Silicon Valley networking. Maybe enough connections to get your kids in...if they're good enough. Renewed institutional commitment.

Great springboard. Coaches who succeed at Stanford succeed anywhere. Career accelerator.
No downside. If you fail, no one can win at Stanford. If you win, you've bucked the odds.
New administration looooves football, or so they say.
Resources. Lots of them. It's a rich place, and they're committed to winning.
Institutional values.
Best brand on the planet. Connections that no other university can replicate. Institutional credibility in every room.
Talent magnet (players, coaches, staff). Recruiting differentiator. Motivated, coachable athletes. National recruiting footprint. Transfer appeal. Easy to recruit coaches and staff. On-campus hosuing perks.
Innovation runway. Player development edge. NFL playbook and credibility. Data and sports science. Top of class sports medicine. Holistic development. Life after football pipeline...yes, the 40 year decision. Leadership incubator.
Excellent facilities and resources. Great tech stack. Superb storytelling environment.
Identity and scheme advantages. Distinctive philosophy. Pro-style with modern flair. High-intellect, cerebral players, especially if you run a "smart" complex system.
NIL the Stanford Way. Premium values. Alumni donors. Corporate ecosystem. $1.3 billion athletic capital campaign (2021-2028). New football ops building, NFL grade weight room, VR film theater.
Reasonable media expectations.
Nowhere to go but up.
Track record of success not too long ago.
Even if your kids don't get into Stanford, great benefits. SF Bay Area best place in world to live. Not just great weather, but quality of life. Safety, schools, healtthcare, culture, nature. Easy travel and access to transportation. Incredibly beautiful campus. Spousal career network.
Autonomy. Low booster interference. Great academic/athletic partnership.
Long-term stability.
A GM and AD who really, really want to win. High patience, real runway.
High caliber coaching peers.
Winning overall athletic tradition.
Nationwide exposure.
Silicon Valley networking. The Stanford Network is your secret superpower. Alumni in every industry.
Bottom line: Stanford isn’t Alabama, but it’s the only place where a coach can win 10 games, graduate 100 % of his players, and still get invited to moderate Davos panels. The job sells itself to the right ambitious, cerebral winner.

Unfortunately I doubt that any of the "big names" on the list meet that description. Stanford isn't a place that even in our "good" streaks contended year after year for a national championship. If that is your goal as a head coach, Stanford might be a nice step along the way but it isn't a "good" final landing spot for coaches with such ambition. That is OK from Stanford's point of view. However, I doubt that rebuilding a program that has significant institutional constraints and is a "stepping stone" job is attractive to most coaches. We need to find the one who wants to and can do the job, basically the next JH. When he got the job almost everybody regarded it as a bold move. Coming from success at University of San Diego as the only reference point was not reassuring. It worked out, but IMO replicating that would be difficult.

My impression is that Garrett turned us down due to lack of confidence on NILs and other financial support for the football program. That calculation may change with what Andrew has done and will do. I like Garrett because he would attract recruits and he has a personal taste for Stanford.
Stanford is a good retirement job (Walsh II) or a springboard job (Harbaugh)

Except Walsh quickly discovered that being a college coach at Stanford made too many demands on him. It was "hard". He didn't want to do that. I am guessing that in the days of NIL and cross-country conferences it is even worse. It is not a "retirement" job at all, especially given Stanford's current problems.

I'm not so sure. Locksley is
very popular personally among UMD faithful. He's as close to alum status without being one, loves the university and DC, and by most accounts, they love him back. It may be a bit iffy with a new AD in place now, but, still, it'd seem the bottom would have to completely drop for them to even entertain his firing.
Full disclosure, I'd floated Locksley as a possibility here back after Shaw stepped down. Upstanding person, familiar with the region (had a stint at Pacific way back when), crackerjack recruiter committed to getting good and smart kids, will never embarrass the school or program - sure, I thought that might fly at Stanford.
Hamilton's done great work developing their hotshot freshman QB, by the way. He's going to be really, really good.

Well, based on
this video, he does seem to like us - a LOT. He sure knows his Cardinal lore, even if he doesn't get the "Tree thing". Very interesting video indeed - maybe a big box of Stanford schwag is all it'd take....

Lot of character red flags, but if I'm being honest, not irredeemable if he truly seeks forgiveness. But those with resumes like his are not often humble enough to do so.
I think he did a video like this during the Shaw era, right? Maybe he really does like Stanford. Would he say the same thing for any school that sent him a box of gear? (lol)

On Gruden, I wouldn't read anything into the box openings. I watched one other school's box opening. Very similar. Lots of enthusiasm for the school in the box. He does enough research on history to make the enthusiasm sound legit. It's low cost branding for the schools. For Gruden it is probably 'remember me' to get back into broadcasting, or he monetizes the views, or maybe he really is just collecting merch from as many places as will send it to him. He's opened boxes from the Broncos, Giants, and Bucs, Udub, Wazzou, Notre Dame, Utah, North Dakota State, and Pacific, which I don't even think plays football these days.
The kind of coach Stanford wants thinks he can win a national title here. Why not? UVA has a really good chance to make the CFP this year and they looked an awful lot like Stanford the past few seasons. Lost. That's what Luck can sell along with all the heavy lifting he (Luck) will be doing to allow the coach to do all the coaching. A Walsh II or any other coach might not find it as "hard" if Luck does the "hard" parts or farms them out to others.
Why would any coach come here? Money and opportunity. Compared to thousands of ongoing opportunities for accountants, doctors, lawyers and engineers, there are still only 136 D1 FBS head coaching jobs in all the land.
The competitive market is bonkers this time around with so many in-season sackings and high-end coach availability. Would be interesting to know Luck's process and how he has pivoted, if at all. Wonder if he was always going to wait until the end of the season in January.

Further to your point, there's only 68 FBS head coaching jobs in the Power conferences.
So I liken selling our Stanford head coach position as being not unlike selling the run down fixer upper,
but that resides in a somewhat exclusive neighborhood, where there is a lot of upside potential for the right buyer.

Quote:Jon Gruden, the former NFL coach who resigned in 2021 amid controversy over offensive emails, has made it clear he wants back on the sidelines. But coaching college football in the vaunted SEC? Gruden says he would jump at the chance.
"The only reason I really came here is I want to coach again," Gruden said during a speaking engagement with the Georgia Bulldogs. "I'm being honest with you, I do not bullshit, either. I want to coach again. I'd die to coach in the SEC. I would love it. I would f---ing love it."
Gruden opened up about his life since resigning from the Las Vegas Raiders in October 2021 during an extensive interview with CBS Sports in September 2024, in which he revealed staying largely out of the public eye and dedicating much of his time to studying game film and mentoring players privately. He then joined Barstool Sports the following month in November 2024.
Despite the controversy that ended his NFL coaching career, Gruden has repeatedly expressed a strong desire to return to coaching -- this time at the college level. To prepare for that possibility, he has been actively educating himself on the modern nuances of college football -- including the transfer portal, NIL deals and recruiting strategies, all of which have dramatically changed the landscape since his last college role as a wide receivers coach at Pittsburgh in 1991.
Several college athletic directors acknowledged to CBS Sports last fall that while Gruden's past remains a significant hurdle, there could be opportunities for him at some schools, particularly those outside the Power Four willing to take calculated risks.
Yet, the idea of him coaching in the SEC -- arguably the most competitive and scrutinized college football conference -- adds layers of complexity. SEC administrators have described Gruden as "untouchable" at that level due to potential backlash over his unceremonious exit for the unveiling of racist, anti-gay and misogynistic emails.

Matt, you are just awesome! Wow, just wow.
I guess I was a bit surprised to see Norvell on the list. I was at the FSU game and got the impression that we were very lucky to win. FSU just seemed to shoot themselves in the foot a few times, they had way better athletes and they still lost. Granted, the injury to their QB1 was a big deal, but it seems to me there was something lacking from the coaching perspective.
