But, their SoS was harmed by bad year for ACC.
It was also harmed by USC not being even a top 20 team this year. Normally this game is one of the most difficult on ND's schedule. That hasn't been true lately. Stanford of course hasn't help the ND SoS for quite some time. IMO that is a good reason to not continue the series, and this latest situation makes it very probable it will not be renewed. Keeping USC is also less certain for similar reasons, but ND may believe USC will be "better" in the near future, while Stanford will not. Let's hope they are wrong on both counts.

usc does have the top ranked recruiting class for next year. so not a terrible bet to keep playing southern cal

But they don’t have a conference to fine them big bucks.

Iowa State and K-State fined $500K by Big 12.

I wonder if they did the math on the cost (even including the fine) vs revenue of a bowl game and decided that the two weeks of extra practice was not enough of a benefit.  I also wonder how many players are excited about going to "minor" bowl games and how many might sit out the games to either enter the NFL draft or the portal.....

ISU and KSU have new coaches (and maybe lots of new staffs) so might want to focus on recruiting their current players and looking for new ones....

USC often has very highly rated recruits. In the somewhat distant past, that often resulted in a good team and a high national ranking. Recently however, the team hasn't seemed to perform anywhere close to their recruit rankings/hype. IMO the under-performing will continue.

Who could have possibly imagined that as the playoff expands that bowl games would be devalued and that more players and teams would blow off non CBP bowl games.

Exactly.  Auburn, Baylor, Florida State, Kentucky, and Rutgers join the party and have all declined bowl bids.

I think many, if not most of the other bowls will fall by the wayside, with the possible exception of the All-Star games. They'll still exist so that players can increase their draft potential.

James Madison?  Tulane?  What a joke.

They still can’t get it right.  The rationale for taking Miami, a team that couldn’t win a conference that was so weak that its Champion didn’t get in over a team that rattled off 10 straight, most of them blow outs, is absurd.  It was a week one game.

Take the best 4 Conference champs.  Next 8 picked by the computer.  If there is no Power 5 school.  Oh,well., tough.

The 12 best teams should be in.

I think it is the culture. There are a lot of guys there who have been told for their entire lives that they are great football players and destined for great success in college and the NFL. For these guys, it is all about them. When things aren't going well, infighting starts. Players do their own thing. After a few losses, the players realize they aren't going to "win" anything that year and basically quit.

Other programs have the same kind of recruits, but their culture isn't Hollywood (as USC's is). The head coach and "the program" dictates to the athletes, not visa-versa. When USC had their "iconic" coaches, like Carroll, Robinson, and McKay USC could control the personalities and harness the superior talent. Most other coaches at USC, and basically all "recent" coaches haven't been able to do that. The inmates, or a subset thereof, run the asylum. Thus the chronic under-performance. NIL and all the hype surrounding college football has of course made the problem worse. I am not sure it is possible to "fix" the issues at USC today no matter who the coach is.

RE: LATEST CFP SCENARIO / RANKINGS - PVTree - 12-07-2025

If enough teams reject a bowl, Stanford may get an invite at 4-8.

Poor widdle Domers. Run up the score on us and still miss CFP. And now they take their ball and go home.

Although I must say that “Pop Tarts Bowl” doesn’t exactly sound like a heavenly ending to a season.

The PopTarts bowl has a storied 35-year history, beginning in 1990 as the Blockbuster Bowl in Miami.
Stanford beat Penn State in the 3rd edition of the bowl.

Carquest Bowl (1994–1997)
MicronPC Bowl (1998)
MicronPC.com Bowl (1999–2000)
Visit Florida Tangerine Bowl (2001)
Mazda Tangerine Bowl (2002–2003)
Champs Sports Bowl (2004–2011)
Russell Athletic Bowl (2012–2016)

They will never get it "right" because there is no right.  In fact, I think not getting it "right" is a feature, not a bug, as it allows for entertaining blather on sports radio.

It used to be that in order to win a national title, you had to win week in and week out.  You could *maybe* afford one loss over the course of the season (at least if you were in the SEC), but you pretty much had to have a near spotless record, and a loss meant a very real possibility that you might miss out to another 1-loss team with a slightly better record.  Thus, every game mattered, and since most teams couldn't sniff the playoffs, they could at least entertain themselves with a nice bowl someplace warm at the end of the year.

Now, you have 12 teams (and if the Big Ten gets its way, you will have many more).  The bottom half have no business competing for a national title.  DIdn't win your conference?  Who cares.  Now teams feel entitled to be in the playoffs even though they lost *two* games early in the season because, apparently, early season game don't count as much as late season thrashings of *checks notes* Syracuse and Stanford, teams a combined 7-17.  The bottom line is the Irish lost two games, and ran rufshot over the rest of the schedule because the toughest team on there was 8-4 Pitt and 9-3 USC.  BYU at 11-2, Vanderbilt at 10-2 also got left out.  I mean, everything is going to be arbitrary (and even if you leave it up to a computer, it is arbitrary what criteria go into the score you use).  I have no problem with Miami being selected and Notre Dame being left out; after all, Miami beat Notre Dame.

RE: LATEST CFP SCENARIO / RANKINGS - Papa John - 12-07-2025

With all of the defections at least three 5-7 teams made bowls: Appalachian State, Rice and Mississippi State. So Stanford finished just one win short of bowl eligibility!

It isn’t the outcome that has everyone in a lather, it is the process.  In early November, Notre Dame was eight places above Miami.  Both teams rolled down the stretch winning their last four games convincingly.  Making a case for Miami jumping ND in the last week given that fact requires a Rube Goldberg-like explanation.

This right answer in my opinion (and that of many who follow college football closely) is stop the weekly rankings and issue one ranking at the end of the season.  Putting Miami ahead of ND using only a final ranking would be quite defensible.  The current system is a sham.
