Yup, thanks jacket.  I misspoke and gave the probability of making exactly 1/2 not the probability of making at least one of two.  The probability of at least one is the sum of the probability of exactly one and the probability of making two.

And yes, a freshman in a high leverage situation might be a worse free throw shooter than his long term average.

Taking a step back from stats class, his season-long 81% free throw shooting percentage probably overstates, at least a little, a freshman's probability of making a free throw in the final 10 seconds of a close regional final. ;)

Now someone do the probability of stanford basketball being competitive in the ncaa tournament again

Hi BC,

(1) Hope you are doing okay.

(2) I think thats your opinion; Pretty sure Duke University & its Fans & Alums, are pretty proud of their stellar tradition of 'multiple NCAA championships' & multiple Elite Eight results & multiple Final-Four results', ...and would disagree with your characterization of it being 'money down the drain'.

(3) Its not exactly the same, but thats like saying 'spending millions of dollars on scientific research that fails to produce the exact result you wanted, is money down the drain'.

(4) If ones attitude is to be timid to spend money (whether it be in basketball or scientific research) based on the chance of not getting the exact result you want ...one will not improve or grow, and are better off sitting on your couch eating bon-bons, or perhaps this is best expressed with the following beloved British poem, we all know:

"Little miss Muffet, she sat on her tuffet
Eating her curds and whey
Along came a spider, who sat down beside her
And frightened miss Muffet away"

Yep, one of the better Tourney 2nd Halfs I have seen; Separate to Coach Hurley 'going nose to nose' with the referee after the 'game winning 3ptr' (which he should have been T'd up for) ....shows the 'anatomy of a comeback' and how with possession to possession adjustments & momentum, a NCAA Tourney game can swing radically, which is why NCAA Tourney games are so riveting & exciting.

they'll be talking about this game for a loooong time.
and here's Hurley explaining the headbutt.  no idea how much truth is in there, but at least it's entertaining.

Thanks for the reddit link above; Ha, to put it mildly, his explanation is 'a little bit of a reach'.

Somewhere there is tape of the Duke broadcasters going ballistic for a technical foul although I don't think it was this headbutt. Boy, that would have been something.

Good officiating to not make anything out of a coach's excitement in the moment.

Agree, good restraint by the refs; But Coach Hurley this year has had a few 'bumps & run ins' with referees 'in game', so there is a little pattern. He would be wise to 'be intense' but stop bumping refs 'in game', for the Final Four.
