The above-linked article contains this quote:
Quote:In a statement Monday, Cody Campbell, chairman of the Texas Tech Board of Regents, said Texas Tech will not "seek the return" of any money paid to Sorsby through his NIL agreements with the university.
Campbell also noted, "The bottom line is that Texas Tech did absolutely nothing but act with complete integrity through this entire process."
The fact that Texas Tech will nor "seek return" of NIL paid to Sorsby arguably does indicate integrity. They knew about this issue at least in part and recruited him anyway. Having it blow up in their face isn't  Sorsby's fault. Texas Tech took a chance that didn't work out.

However, IMO Texas Tech acted with no integrity at all when they chose to litigate  Sorsby's lifetime ban. Texas Tech is well aware that it is subject to NCAA regulation. They are also well aware they are part of the Big-12. In both cases they have agreed to follow "the rules". Clearly the NCAA action was warranted and was totally in line with "the rules". Attempting to wiggle out of a commitment to a particular code of conduct you have agreed to uphold just because it is harmful to your ability to win football games demonstrated Texas Tech has no "integrity" whatsoever. It is perfectly clear the intention was to ride out whatever backlash this breach of integrity would engender. Only when Texas Tech decided it was not feasible did they change course. I don't know if Sorsby chose to enter the supplemental NFL draft of his own accord, or if he was "strongly advised" by Texas Tech to do so when it became clear there were going to be headwinds to his remaining at Texas Tech that Texas Tech could not (or feared they could not) overcome. In either case, Texas Tech behaved without integrity.

cynical me asks how much NIL money was from TT vs from some other entity which may or may not want their money back.....

RE: Sorsby granted injunction and will play - Canalejas - 06-15-2026

I was curious how long they would go on claiming that helping him overcome a gambling addiction meant they had to let him play football. It was a pretty wild argument.

RE: Sorsby granted injunction and will play - BostonCard - 06-15-2026

Follow on question, if you are an NFL team, what chance do you take on a player with a known gambling addiction?  He bet on his own team, though there’s no evidence he used insider info or altered his play.  Still, if you are an NFL franchise, do you want the risk that he would shave some points in a game? Or that he is found to have relapsed in his addiction and is sibject to a ban from football (or legal consequences).  I guess Texas tech was willing to… erm… look the other way, so if he’s good enough and falls far enough that he might be a steal, someone will probably take him.

Cody Campbell (TxTch OL '04) is an oil & gas billionaire...he'll be alright.

Texas Tech had a much shorter timeline than an NFL team will. They only had to get him through the one year. I am guessing that for whatever reason they thought the NCAA wouldn't actually ban him and that Texas Tech could slow-walk the process long enough to get him through the year. That didn't work because the situation was "worse" than Texas Tech appreciated. I wonder whether Sorsby wasn't fully forthcoming with Texas Tech about what he had done or if Texas Tech simply didn't exercise due diligence. In either case Texas Tech was guilty of massive wishful thinking. An actual ban was just too hard to work-around, certainly PR wise and very probably legally, even for a year.

NFL teams OTOH undoubtedly don't expect Sorsby will play his rookie season. He actually has less game experience than many QBs who have only played three years in college. Sorsby will have to stay out of trouble and actually earn his spot. He is not a "short term rental". I tend to agree that he will be drafted but if so there will be no guaranteed money on the table. It also wouldn't surprise me at all if he weren't drafted. There are probably teams willing to look at him as an UDFA because that costs them only the time they spend trying to make an asset out of him. Using a draft pick OTOH gives up another potential player. Given where Sorsby is in his development and with his additional baggage it is arguably not worth it.

I know he is, but there still seems to be as much (if not more) money flowing to players from outside than directly from the University, my point was will TT have paid the money or some collective which is not technically TT but in terms of money it may be a zero sum game).   Maybe they will up their recruiting from Stanford since our transfers to them seem to less of a problem....

What if all NFL teams pass on him and there is no Supplemental Draft? Does he return to TT?

The NFL CBA includes a guarantee for all players selected in the NFL Draft. For example, a player drafted in the middle of the third round receives a bonus of approximately $1.5M.

Unfortunately I wasn't as clear as I should have been. What I meant was that I really doubted he would be a first round pick. Therefore there almost certainly would be no guaranteed money in his contract going forward. That is important to the team because guaranteed money in the contract becomes "dead money" if a player doesn't work out and is released. IMO no team is going to put themselves in a position to take even a modest dead money cap hit to get Sorsby. The probability of him not making the team is just too high. You are of course correct that all players who get drafted receive an immediate one-time bonus proportional to their draft position.

Correct. Only players who are not eligible for CFB can enter the supplemental draft so by definition he cannot return to college football if not drafted.

Sorsby’s attorney indicated that he will take the necessary legal action to permit him to become eligible for the NFL draft thus ending his college career.

However, for the purpose of calculating monies against the salary cap, all bonuses regardless how much they total, are spread over the length of the contract.  Therefore, a $100,000 bonus (for a low round draft choice) on a five year contract would result in $80,000 in dead money if the player is released after year one.  As you noted, beyond the bonus, a player’s annual salary is not guaranteed beyond the first season in most rookie contracts.

I’m predicting Round 3 to the Steelers.  That gives him a chance to “redshirt” his first year behind Rodgers.

Your prediction seems plausible to me. It is very unlikely that a team desperate for a QB immediately would take a chance on Sorsby. The Steelers have at least a year before they have to decide who will be "next".

There is a mandatory bonus paid to each draft participant based on their draft order. If that player is released all the remaining bonus ("dead money") is counted that year. If Sorsby falls to the later rounds his dead money hit will be round-off error in the salary cap computation. OTOH even the third round would be 1.2 million if Sorsby is released after year one. That isn't "a lot" by current NFL standards, but it is no longer negligible. Right now the Steelers are pretty close to the cap limit but they have significant wiggle room through restructured contracts available. Cap space is probably not an immediate issue for them.

It will indeed be interesting to see where Sorsby lands. My belief is that he will be considered "damaged goods", and the Raiders already have their QB so their "wild card" approach is off the table :-). IMO there is at least a 20% chance he goes undrafted.

RE: Sorsby granted injunction and will play - 82lsju - 06-17-2026

you can see the 2026 contract value by draft pick here

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cba/rookie-scale

third round goes from $7.4m to $6.7m

Why would the NFL take a chance on a guy who couldn't follow simple rules in a lower league and then give him a shot in the bigs?  Is he that good??
