I was privy to this letter this last week but didn't want to be the first to post it for fear of confidentiality etc, but it speaks wonders as to what type of community Stanford is.
Yeah...I hope there aren't any negatives to be associated with posting it. I couldn't think of any so I went ahead, thinking this community would appreciate the sentiments as I did.

Yea I hear ya. As a community I think we def appreciate the posting of it, adds value to discussions, and really shows what kind of environment we are in. I think omitting any record of source, as you did, is the right move as well.

The mere thought that the letter was needed almost made me cry. It must be so hard to be the parent of a place kicker. I am thankful that this happened to him at Stanford and not at other schools. Here, at least, I suspect the community is able to move along and let it go. At other places this whole event could almost be dangerous for him and his family.
No one cares about the place kicker until the place kicker misses. That's the way it goes, but even last night the Northern Illinois place kicker missed 3 FGs. It happens. The difference? That team won, so no one really cared that the kicker had a terrible night. Well, that, and no one was probably watching the GoDaddy.com bowl.
There was a bowl game on last night?!?!
[sub]totally kidding, but agreeing with you[/sub]

The camaraderie, the friendships, the humanity that these players learn as they play more for each other than for themselves--those are the redeeming lessons of this game.Â
It is touching to see Mrs. Williamson's letter. While most of the country was sympathetic for Jordan as an individual, it reminds us of the tremendous role of the family of an athlete. Thank goodness for Jordan that he has that level of support at home, from his team, from the fans, and from the university.

Thanks for linking the story, LSJU82. It is great to see Burton's answers to Maisel's questions, as well as to hear of Shaw's reaction. Truly a demonstration of positive family spirit.Â
