Do you do that again for the second game? And then the third game? It's just too difficult to keep switching back and forth between quarterbacks for one to really play well. Just ask Texas - the David Ash-Case McCoy QB switch last year was terrible. Now that they settled on David Ash this year, they have found out that he can play. Or ask Florida with Jeff Driskel and Jacoby Brissett - last year was a mess rotating between these two but now Driskell has developed into a competent quarterback now that he doesn't have to look over his shoulder.

I agree with Garvin....make the choice and let him play until he proves it isn't working.

We will never know if Nottingham could have separated himself from Nunes, will we?  And you view that as a good thing?

What we do know is that even though Texas went through the fiasco last year, Ash separated himself, and if you just got done watching the Texas game like I did, you saw what an incredible performance that was.

Re: My predictions - washingtonismoney - 09-29-2012

I don't think Ash separated himself at all.

QB A, 2011: 57% completion, 6.2 YPA, 4 TD 8 INT
QB B, 2011: 61.1% completion, 7.18 YPA, 7 TD 4 INT.

I know which one I'd much rather have, if all we're judging on is on-field performance.

QB B, Case McCoy. I think we'd be going crazy--and justifiably so--if Shaw picked QB A and insisted QB A was better with some coachspeak that is somehow uniquely infuriating to Shaw detractors.

I'm also struggling to see how your question is responsive to Ratmandoo.

(The last time Stanford tried it, in 1974, the resulting quarterback controversy raged on for three years.) I think it's time for a change because the guy who has the job now isn't getting it done. But like washingtonismoney, I acknowledge the possibility that Shaw was right in the first place and the guys behind him will perform even worse. Nunes is playing poorly, but if you think D-1 quarterbacks don't come any worse, you never saw Joe Aboob or Justin Vedder.

Or Zach Maynard.

Why?  Ratmandoo's method, like garvin's, gives the you safety of consistency and development but screws you if you make the wrong original choice.

Except his final sentence is, "make the choice and let him play until he proves it isn't working." So, uh, no, that's not what Ratmandoo is saying at all.

Uh, so when would either have made the change?  Honestly?

Re: My predictions - washingtonismoney - 09-30-2012

I don't know, as I am neither Ratmandoo or garvin. Personally, I would take a look at another guy, unless the other options are just totally useless-looking in practice.

Re: My predictions - Oasis - 09-30-2012

[font=georgia]George McClellan got two chances.  McDowell, the miscreant Pope, Burnside and Hooker only got one.  So WNA precedent suggests one more game max for Nunes before somebody else gets a chance.

Our worst play Thursday night obviously was at QB, but our O-line (although their pass pro was good) didn't knock Washington off the line of scrimmage.  We couldn't run on them.  So of course we tried to take defenders out of the box with the pass.  But we couldn't do that either.  When Nunes with no one on him threw a short pass to a wide-open receiver (I think it was Ertz or Hewitt) and hit his feet I figured Shaw would yank him right there.

I guess it's not surprising that when you have somebody as good as Andrew Luck, you don't get a lot of great talent behind him to sit on the bench for two or three years.  Nobody was warming up to replace Robert E. Lee.

To say that we shouldn't split the quarterback role is note remotely the same thing as saying once you pick a quarterback, you keep him forever and a day.

Just as you wouldn't keep a quaterback forever and a day, I wouldn't keep splitting forever and a day.

Re: My predictions - Ratmandoo - 09-30-2012

Here's my answer: Now that we've seen the underwhelming performance from Nunes, give Nottingham more reps in practice especially with the long week to prepare for Arizona. If he shows that he has a better handle on the offense and plays better than Nunes, give Nottingham (or Hogan or Lloyd) the chance to start with the same leash the Nunes had over the first four games. If no one practices better than Nunes, then Nunes stays the starter. I know there will be arguments about being able to play better when the "lights are on" but I just don't buy them. The "lights are on" in practice if you're battling for a job.

Absolutely agree. If you aren't practicing well, and can't figure out how to practice well, that holds back your performance to some degree. Saying you're a gamer or whatever is just an excuse.
