Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - 81alum - 04-14-2013

Hoopgurlz for our 6-pack year issued the following rankings:

Amber Orrange 15
Taylor Greenfield 31
Alex Green 49
Bonnie Samuelson 61
Erica Payne 78
Jasmine Camp 83
http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/rankings/_/class/2011

Here is what they said about Alex:
Quote:Point guard with good size and a lot of game. Strong physically with good decision making ability. Has quick hands defensively and long arms, which make her a good defender. She shares the ball and plays under control. Makes her teammates better. Has a nice release on her pull-up. Green finishes with contact. Didn't seem quite her listed 5-9 (5-8).

Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - Mike - 04-14-2013

Alex Green was ranked by HoopGurlz as the overall #49 best recruit, the 12th-ranked guard in her class. Curiously, she was listed on their site at 5'9", although when she's next to Amber or Jasmine (both 5'7"), it appears she's closer to 5'5" or 5'6". Chronologically, she was the last one in the 2013 class of six to be accepted by Stanford.

Amber was ranked #15, Taylor #31, Bonnie #61, Erica #78, and Jasmine #83.

Of course, the rankings can't tell you how well that player will perform in actuality, or how successfully that player will fit within the team framework. For perspective, here's some other senior-year (high school) rankings of Stanford WBB players:

Present roster: Chiney #1, Alyson #12 (was #6 before her ACL in her senior year), Mikaela #16, Sara #18, Toni #60 (!!!), Tess unranked (outside of top 100, but rated as 15th at post position [versus overall]); Kiran and Denia both unranked and unlisted by position.

2013 recruits: Erica McCall #11, Kailee Johnson #20, Karlie Samuelson #77, walk-on Brianna Roberson unranked (but 57th at guard position), and Khaliya "Lilly" Thompson unranked (but 61st at point guard position).

Selected past players, for comparison: Jane Appel #3, Nneka #6, Joslyn #10, Kayla # in the "teens," Jeannette # in the high-30's (!!!).

2014 recruiting picture: Brianna Turner #3, Imani Littleton #38, Olivia Ogwumike unranked (but rated 22nd at forward position).

I remember reading that Toni wasn't seen a lot by the scouting services, partly because she also played soccer until her senior year and partly because of an injury at a critical point (iirc). Those kept her out of some of the tournaments the scouts go to and resulted in her not getting a high rating. Happily, Tara and company saw her and knew what they were getting!

As you should know Hoopgurlz is now defunct and they issued several sets of rankings as I happen to know the guy who did them, there was also 2 Greens that year, I have links of all rankings from all services so can see from the different sets and when they were issued that our Alex Green was not included in their final grouping of rankings and was not considered a top 100 guard, particularly a guard who could run the point which is what Amber needs to give her relief. As an aside, why anyone would think a guard who wasn't used last year when we desperately needed 1 would be able to come in and give Amber relief at the point which is where we needed relief is beyond me!

Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - BobK - 04-15-2013

Thanks for the rankings thoughts.  Green like most recruits was in the Stanford summer camp and was extremely quick and fast.  Recently post game Tara said still our fastest and quickest.  But not playing for a year and a half with the Achilles tear has really set her back.  No clue if she will contribute next year but that's why she hasn't played much.

Wacard do you go to the End of Trail?  I have been 7 times.  I missed last year as I spent almost 2 weeks in Eugene for the T&F Olympic Trials.  But have my hotel for this year.

WAcard, http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/rankings/_/class/2011 is still up and shows Alex Green #49 going to Stanford. But you are certain this was not the final ranking and that she was out of the top 100 in the final? And that even being #49 in this version of the list was meaningless or a mistake??

http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/117496/alex-green describes her as a combo guard or point guard.

Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - 81alum - 04-15-2013

I thought I would look back and see how many 1st year players had started over the last half dozen years or so, to see how realistic Tara's suggestion that three newcomers could start next year.  I was pretty surprised by what I found.  I'm sure I could find more frosh starters if I went back further, but the record is pretty thin.

Player (1st year starts)
Pederson 39
Chiney Ogwumike 35
Wiggins 34
Orrange 23
Gold-Onwude 23
JJ Hones 20
Nneka Ogwumike 14
Greenfield 13
Camp 4 (injured)
Tinkle 3
Kokenis 2

It should be noted that Pederson didn't just start.  She also played a ton of minutes. She also was asked to guard Candace Parker.  It's hard for me to truly remember how good she was.  What a rock.

Re: WBB: What will be our starting team by Pac-12 season? - 81alum - 04-15-2013

Indeed Pederson was a rock.  She averaged 30 minutes a game as a frosh, which was even more than older teammate Appel and second only to Wiggins.  12.6 ppg, 8.4 ppg and she shot .497.  I actually thought that in some ways her frosh year was her best year, since it was before Nneka arrived and Kayla could be used in the 4 position, which was much more natural for her than the 3.  Next year, we could use Beebe, McCall, and/or Johnson to generate numbers like that!

Hoopgurlz rated Kayla 4th overall, by the way, behind Maya Moore, Angie Bjorklund, and Jantel Lavendar.  Not bad company.  It does seem that Hoopgurlz was right about Kayla in 2007.
