Great win! I don't usually watch Women's NCAA tennis but when I do I watch the Cardinal beat the Gators to make it to the Final.
Congrats to the Women's tennis team.Â

The other semifinal also came down to the final set, but in that one the Pac-12 team (UCLA) lost. Stanford will face Texas A&M in the finals.

TAMU beats UCLA and will face Stanford in the finals.

Thanks to Women's Tennis, I now have enough posts to be able to give respect. Another reason to love this team! 8)

Tomorrow evening I will be at the Stanford coaches road show in LA (technically, we will be in Beverly Hills). Maybe they can find a way to project the video on a big screen. It would be great to celebrate a Stanford win with everyone there!

Let's go U.S.A.!
(TAMU's women's tennis team = University of Southern Croatia men's water polo - 8 players: 2 Bolivian, 2 Romanian, 1 each from Mexico, Spain and China - and one from some exotic land called Philadelphia)
This will be the smallest 'cast I've been glued to in a while.

All of Big 12 tennis has turned to international talent to bolster their rosters. Most egregiously, Kansas State:

West Virginia runs a close second: five on their roster, one of which is American. I guess it must be a new team--four frosh and sophomore.

What is this Big XII you speak of in relation to TAMU? They've always
been at war with Eastasia been part of the SEC, haven't they?

What happened? Embree is the #1 ranked single in the country with a 26-1 record. This had to be a stunner and major motivator for Stanford. Congrats to Nicole for leading the way.

The push toward internationalizing women's tennis rosters started several years before the $EC defection.

So sweet! I admit I had given up hope before the tourney. Unexpected victories are wonderful.

From a semifinals preview article on gostanford.com:
Quote:Head coach Roland Thornqvist has racked up over 300 wins during his tenure in Gainesville and he is trying to squeeze one more NCAA title out of senior Lauren Embree, the nation's No. 1-ranked singles player and MVP of the last two NCAA Championships.
Finishing 0-6, 1-6 was probably not what Thornqvist had in mind. Also, I'm worried what kind of fatigue Stanford will be carrying into their championship match against A&M. They've played a lot of tennis over the last few days.

Have they played more tennis that TAMU?
It would be pretty cool for an unlikely title to appear at the 11th (and a half) hour and to seal the deal on the Director's Cup as well.

I was worried about the fatigue too, but TXAM had to work even longer to get through UCLA.
If TXAM won 4-0, then that would have been a big problem. The contest is in the evening, so it should be OK. It is not like a few years ago when they played in the daytime heat of Florida.

This is great to see from the women's tennis team but it isn't the craziest run in the world. The real surprise was how poorly they did in the regular season. I haven't followed them too closely this year but it looks like they are finally healthy at the end of the year. This is the reverse of the last two years when Stanford was the favorite or co-favorite late in the season but got hit with a number of key injuries which cost them in the finals against Florida in 2011 and in the quarters against USC last year.
I watched a number of the women's matches last year when I was working at Stanford and it looks like 4 of the 6 starters from last year are healthy and playing in the NCAAs this year - Nicole Gibbs (who also happens to be the defending NCAA singles champion), Kristie Ahn, Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay. From what I saw last year, these four were all really good players. The biggest player missing from last year is Mallory Burdette, who was the runner up to Gibbs last year in the singles tournament. But it looks like freshman Krista Hardebeck is making up for any lost production from Burdette's spot.
My only guess for the low seeding for the 2013 tournament is that the team dealt with a lot of injuries early and are just rounding into form. It's nice to see a Cardinal team get healthy at the right time of year... and let's stomp those Aggies!!

That match against U$C went 5 hrs...and Stanford has arguably had the tougher road--the #5, #4, and #1 seed teams. A&M with a favorable #3 seed came through the #14, #6, and #7 seeds.

Saw where the recruiting services rating Krista Hardebeck the #1 recruit in the country last year.
Guess they got one right.

Great thread everyone! I forgot about the match last night so reading through this thread had my heart racing! Glad to see us hit stride at the right time and I will be hoping things go well this afternoon. It would be wonderful to win this and keep the streaks alive. Hats off to the ladies for rising to the occasion and good luck in closing things out with their best match yet!
Woot!

The team lost #2 player (and All-American) Mallory Burdette before the season, so there's been a lot of people breaking into new roles. The team is hitting its stride none too soon.
Quote:Stanford is the lowest-seeded team to reach the championship match since UCLA's runner-up finish also as a No. 12 seed in 2007. It's really an incredible accomplishment for a squad that lost its No. 2 player and All-American Mallory Burdette in September, as she elected to forego her senior season and begin her pro career. Prior to this season, only Nicole Gibbs and Stacey Tan had competed in more than two NCAA Tournament matches. A walk-on during her first two seasons, Natalie Dillon had not played in the lineup full-time until her junior year. Who knew what Kristie Ahn would provide? She missed all but three matches in 2012 and basically the entire 2011 postseason due to injuries. Ellen Tsay has limited NCAA experience and Krista Hardebeck is a rookie. Head coach Lele Forood and associate head coach Frankie Brennan have been there and done that during their legendary tenures on The Farm, but this one must feel extra special.
Forood and Brennan recruited well last season :)Â (And Hardebeck chose wisely!)
