Re: Note to Harbaugh: - needle - 11-13-2010

Abetted by a phantom face mask call and a true ASU meltdown-style unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

But, tonight, the key word is ESCAPE.

We\'ll see how it plays out, could go either way...

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - Farm93 - 11-13-2010

Power, Power, Power.

Insert all kinds of Bo quotes.

Basically, if we can\'t run we don\'t deserve to win type stuff.

TKO -

The punches to the face wow the crowd, but it is body blows that win the game.  9-1 is oh so close now!

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - Farm93 - 11-13-2010

Wow!

I guess Wilkerson\'s friends and family are not betting on Cardinal games!

Stanford will win by 4 instead of 11, and that means a lot when the spread is 6.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - fullmetal - 11-13-2010

He\'s playing with the NFL rulebook.  Wanted to run down the clock, but oh well :)

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - Farm93 - 11-13-2010

It was a great and noble move.  Keeping the play count down prevented possible injuries, etc.

So it was a very good decision for the team, but I wouldn\'t recommend a family vacation in Las Vegas anytime soon.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - JeffInCorvallis - 11-13-2010

I don\'t give a crap about the spread.  Unless the BCS computers do.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - fyao - 11-13-2010

Well, I don\'t know the exact formula, but the BCS computers would prefer a 24-13 win than a 17-13 win.

Of course running the ball in for a touchdown runs the slight risk of a kickoff return for a touchdown, an onside kick, then a hail mary touchdown pass.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - washingtonismoney - 11-13-2010

No. All the BCS computers see is the W. They took out margin of victory after Nebraska edged out Oregon for the national title. That\'s why Sagarin\'s ratings are split into ELO (which the BCS uses and doesn\'t use margin of victory) and PREDICTOR (which casinos use to set their lines).

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - fyao - 11-13-2010

So Wisconsin scoring 83 points was for naught then?  I read that they were trying to get an edge on Ohio State and Michigan State for BCS rankings in case all three teams ran the table.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - Farm93 - 11-13-2010

The BCS computer formulas all need to ignore margin of victory.

The people polls often use margin of victory as a proxy.  24-13 would have looked a lot better to those AD staff members that often vote for the coaches on Sunday morning.  We all know they don\'t actually watch Fox Sports Arizona, so the way the team go to 24 would not have been noticed.

The super secret backdoor to the BCS Championship game probably closed down today.  An SEC or Big Ten team will get that 1 loss back door option if it is in play.   However, the path to a BCS bowl game invite was likely not impacted.

C.a.l playing Oregon tough could be good for Stanford, IF Stanford beats C.a.l impressively next week.

Of course, if Stanford finishes 10-2 or 9-3 then it is the Alamo Bowl.  Arizona is losing again, so Pac-12 political forces will likely make sure that Stanford does not get passed over by UofA, OSU or C.a.l.

So for now it is all about the upside.  Beat C.a.l!  Get a BCS invite!

The downside is limited to the Alamo bowl.  I think in August almost everyone on this board would have been delighted with that possibility.

That destruction likely will put them ahead of Stanford in the people polls.  And that will leave them with an outside chance at the BCS Championship game and the inside track to the Rose Bowl.

Margin of Victory still counts because the people polls care.  It also counts because in the event of a three way tie, the Big Ten will use the BCS standings to determine the Rose Bowl participant.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - JeffInCorvallis - 11-13-2010

The 83 points that Wisconsin scored will sway HUMAN voters, even though ASU is a much tougher team than Indiana.  I fear that tomorrow Wisonsin will leapfrog us in the BCS.

It will be interesting to see what happens to TCU and Boise.  TCU has a reasonably close game, trailing at one point.  Boise ran up the score on Idaho which is not a good team.  But both these teams\' real claim to legitimacy is beating Oregon State, which has looked awful the last two weeks losing to UCLA and WSU.  Will either drop below LSU, Stanford, or Wisconsin?  Also, Utah got clocked by the Domers, and they are not a good team this year.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - washingtonismoney - 11-13-2010

In the absence of a truly earth-shattering event, inertia rules the polls. It\'ll be Oregon 1, Auburn 2, either TCU and Boise 3 and the other 4, LSU 5, Stanford 6...and maybe some shakeup below that (e.g. Wisky could get up to 7.)

By the way, I think the computers will think quite highly of our win vis-a-vis Wisconsin\'s. Sagarin, for example, rates Arizona State as a top fifty team; he rates Indiana as one of the very worst teams in Division I--128th.

Re: Note to Harbaugh: - dabigv13 - 11-14-2010

No one seems to remember anymore, but Arizona State came within a missed extra point of going to overtime with Wisconsin, at Wisconsin.

Unfortunate for us that Wisco had that big offensive explosion this particular week. We won\'t be jumping them in any polls, but I think the computers will still keep us at 6 in the BCS.
