Kessler's funny. Has barely gained a positive yard in his life, but he hurt us with his legs a lot in the first quarter by extending the play.
I think Kessler's pretty severely underrated as well. His statistics are solid but unremarkable...but then when you look at his game-by-game stats, you realize that Kiffin's epic offensive homewrecking gave him two of the worst statistical games I've ever seen from a quarterback who later turned out to be solid. (10/19 for 95 yards against Hawai'i! 8/13 for 41 against Wazzu! Considering SC's talent, those may be the worst-coached offensive games I've ever seen.)
I'm rarely a fan of the, "well, if you take away [x game, carry, etc.] it doesn't look so [good/bad]," but these were such outliers that I think it's appropriate. Once you do that, Kessler's YPA goes from 8.22 to 8.6. His INT %, a very good 1.93%, sags to an excellent 1.51%. His completion % goes from 65.4% to 66.2%. It's pretty incredible.

Well...see that play-option pass article I linked in the other thread =\ That kind of weapon could be deadly for Oregon to use against us--with Kessler at the helm for the Fightin' Condoms, it's still worrisome given their competence at running the ball and reciever talent. (Someone keep track of Nelson Agholor, please...)
I am a little confused. Are you saying that we should worry about Kessler on a read-option (of any sort)?
Kessler has run for a career total of -142 yards, i.e. his runs are basically all sacks.

And passing out of an option look isn't new, though isn't utilized a lot because it is difficult to do accurately.
[Throwing the ball after crossing the line of scrimmage is the new wrinkle I saw on the play in the video. (emoticon)]

When a QB tucks and runs, defenses generally pins their ears back and instinctively moves toward the QB as they would any other ballcarrier. This pursuit might leave open receivers who can still catch balls thrown by the QB if the QB makes the pass before crossing the line of scrimmage.Â
Yes, we should worry about plays that hinge on misdirection and very clever stunts.
