I've seen the documentary and I'm pretty sure they played on every song ever recorded between 1960 and 1980.

I only wish the Beatles had done a cover of it.  Or the Stones.  Maybe arranged like House of the Rising Sun?

The first album I ever bought for myself was Styx's "Paradise Theater," purchased from Pier Records in 1981. I'm pretty sure it was sold at a garage sale somewhere along the way, which is a shame. I don't wish I had that album, I just wish I had the first album I ever bought, if that makes sense.

The first album I owned was Cruisin' by the Village People.  I didn't buy it.  My aunt bought it for me at a department store in Taipei on the condition that I do the YMCA dance.  I attracted a crowd because that kind of exuberant behavior was very unusual for kids in Taiwan back then.  I remember loving the Village People not just for the disco grooves, but also all the neat costumes.  The gay archetypes, of course, went over the head of my 7 year old self.

I saw Styx at a MTV party during the cable tv convention.  The bill (in descending order): Styx, REO Speedwagon, and Journey, which struck me as backwards (no offense Hank and you other Styx-lovers).  When Journey came out with just the guitarist and keyboardist sans Steve Perry, I realized why they opened.  Instrumental-only Journey is not so good.  (This was before they found the Filipino guy.)  Upon closer inspection of my pass I saw that it read Sounds of Journey.

The midwestern boy in me enjoyed Speedwagon,  Take it on the run, baby!  Then Styx came on.  Well into their set they hadn't played Mr. Roboto yet.  So I started a chant for Mr. Roboto (mostly to be ironic being ethnically Asian).  I got a dirty look from Tommy Shaw.  They didn't play it. I think out of spite.

I think that the first cassette I ever bought was the soundtrack to Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.  Beat that.

I always ask people this question (well, people old enough to have actually purchased music). For me, it was Faith No More's The Real Thing.

(If it had been Marky Mark's Walk on the Wildside, definitely one of my earliest purchases, maybe I wouldn't be so keen on asking.)

Just look in your Purchased playlist.  There isn't a date to sort, but you can probably figure it out by looking at the songs.

My first album was probably "A Hard Day's Night" or Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence".  From that innocent start I stayed in a pretty "pop" mode (some folk music, a little Beach Boys, etc.) and went to my first live concert in my junior year of high school.  Get this.  I went on a school-sponsored trip to Minneapolis, which may as well have been New York from the perspective of a high school student from a small town in Iowa, to see Led Zepplin.  To top off the experience, one of my classmates experienced his first acid trip as the combined result of a trip to the bathroom and a naive and trusting outlook.  Quite an introduction to the "Age of Aquarius"!

On the mp3 I actually listed a napster tune I stole.  Didn't do itunes until really recently.

I'm still cheap.  I get almost all of my music from the library and download it.  Hard to find new stuff, but that is satisfied somewhat with podcasts.

If you right click on the header of the "purchased" playlist, you can add additional columns.  One such column is "Date Added".  Add it, and click on the column heading to order it in the order you added it to your playlist.

My first song shows as "Born Losers" by Matthew Good.

By the way, Oman, if you are cheap and want to get new stuff, I'd recommend Spotify.  If you are willing to put up with some ads, you can stream most everything.  And if you are willing to put up a few dollars ($10 a month) you can do away with the ads.  Apple's forthfcoming Apple Music might be a good option if you are an Apple fan and want to hook up multiple accounts in a family to the same service (it too is $10 a month, but $15 for up to six accounts on a family plan).

First album: Styx, Paradise Theater*
First cassette: The Smiths, Strange Ways Here We Come
First CD: The Police, Ghost in the Machine
First Concert: The Police, Synchronicity Tour, 1983 (Openers: Berlin, The Fixx, Thompson Twins)

*If we're being technical, the first album I ever purchased was The Monkees. When I was seven or eight the show was in re-runs on weekday afternoons, and they always advertised the album that you could send away for. I finally convinced my mom to buy it for me, waited the ETERNITY it took for it to arrive, then wore the vinyl out. A couple years later, when I was ten, I begged for a KISS album for Christmas. My parents took one look at the album artwork and song list on the back, and bought me a cheesy compilation LP called "Love Rock" instead. I still remember the opening track -- Lou Rawls, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine." Anyway, I choose not to count any of that.
