This made me curious about the Pac-12 record for rushing TDs by a quarterback. I looked at last year's Pac-12 media guide (this year's doesn't seem to be available yet).

Last year's Pac-12 record book lists 19 players with 35 or more career rushing TDs (including Gerhart, Taylor, and Vardell). None of them was a quarterback. So the Pac-12 record for QB rushing TDs apparently is less than 35.

Mariota ended his career with 29 rushing TDs. So he may hold the Pac-12 record for rushing TDs by a QB. Or maybe there's some other QB with a few more.

By the way, I don't remember Toby missing Luck. I believe Terrell and Griff Whalen each completed one to Luck.

You are right, Toby's career stats indicate he was 1/1 passing, with 1 18 yard touchdown (against Notre Dame).  He also had 205 yards rushing in the win on my birthday.

Here is the pass to Whalen...

also, if you keep watching, you can see the play where Toby absolutely levels the poor ND DB.  One of the all time great performances by a Stanford football player.

Absolutely preposterous highlights!  What memories.  However, I remain infuriated he didn't win the Voldemort, despite our concerted lobbying!

Wrong time, wrong ancestry, wrong position., wrong region. He was robbed.  But, then, so was Luck. Twice. Amazing to think about:  we had three Voldemort runners-up in a row.  After 46 years aren't we due a break?

Wait, are you implying this is Hogan's year? Or is this about McCaffrey?  :P

Neither.  Hogan will need a miraculous year, with TV highlights, to overcome the perception that he is a placeholder and "the guy who followed Luck."  McCaffrey needs a great year, then next year we can talk.  He's not going to rush for 2,000 yards in our offense, and it would take something like that, plus an astounding performance by the team, to make this year a possibility.  But someday . . . .

How many TDs did Frankie Albert have?

So Hogan's closing in on the record for most rushing TDs by a QB, no?

Yep.

Career rushing TDs by a QB

10  Plunkett
  9  Brodie
  9  Paye
  9  Hogan
[/quote]

I find this very surprising, especially in the context of Elway only having 5 rushing TDs, as good a scrambler as he was. I hope Hogan gets atop this list in Evanston.

Lucky for hogan, he was the guy after the guy who came after Luck. I know we all want to forget Nunes but he was the guy who followed luck. I don't think being "the guy who followed Nunes" is quite the same burden.

Stanford's football archives before about 1953 range from woefully inadequate to non-existent.

The available information shows that Frankie Albert threw 16 TD passes. But Stanford doesn't have a total for his rushing TDs. We do know that he had 187 net rushing yards for his career. Sorry, that's the best we can do based on Stanford's archives.

Elway was a good scrambler, but that didn't translate into a lot of rushing gains. His career rushing total was -279 yards. I think he scrambled looking first to pass, rather than to gain yardage with his legs.

Correct, but I think the national perception tends to leap over Nunes to Hogan without a blink.  I think if you showed the career totals, most would be unbelieving.

Thanks, I did not know that about his career rushing total. I'm probably also projecting is "helicopter touchdown" and other NFL exploits back onto his college career (if he did that in the NFL, surely he also did some cool stuff in college). And I do now recall him seemingly trying to drill the ball THROUGH defenders with his receivers not so far beyond (i.e. he opted for the (extremely hard) pass, even when the receiver wasn't that far away)...

Re: Kevin Hogan in the record books - Stymie - 07-29-2015

I've aced Statistics at both LSJU and LSJU of the East, and agree with the memes of both of "lies, damned lies, and statistics" and that of Justice Potter Stewart re: pornography, i.e "I know it when I see it."

When I played football (HS and LSJU intramurals) I played quarterback and to put Hogan in the same cohort as Plunkett, Elway, Benjamin, etc. is heresy.  Kevin is a very good athlete who plods within a restricted system which focuses on smash mouth football.  He may get into the record books, but if he doesn't do any better this year than he has done in the last 2 1/2 seson, we will be disappointed.

With two games left, McCaffrey has 1640 yards.  If he averages 180 yards in his last two games, he will, in fact, go for 2000 yards rushing.  Not to mention the 435 yards receiving, 922 yards returning kickoffs and 38 yards returning punts.

I would so love that to happen.  Then, adding other all purpose yards he would not only break the record he would demolish it.  Fingers crossed.
