I wonder what the alignment will be in the nickel. Normally you say we take out the NT and line up the two DE's (Shittu and Thomas), but you could argue that Phillips might do ok in nickel-lineman role.

For those concerned that Stanford is likely to burn 3 DB redshirts, consider this factoid:
Since Harbaugh came to Stanford, only 3 DBs, Bernard, Amanam, and Pippens, have actually returned as a 5th year senior.Â
Most DBs played as true freshmen. Lyons and Reynolds redshirted only due to injury. Terrence Brown, who left with a year of eligibility remaining, and Taijuan Thomas, were the only other voluntary redshirts until last year. That's a total of 5 voluntary redshirts in the 7 recruiting classes from 2007-2013.
The point is that DBs come to college ready to contribute. They probably redshirt less frequently than any other position. And the guys that Stanford got last year came even more college resdy than most. Meeks is the son of a DB coach. Reid is the brother of an NFL safety. Edwards is just a beast. Barring injury, all of these guys are likely to leave after 4 years even if they don't redshirt. So may as well play them.

Did dabigv just climb out from under a rock? Obviously asleep at the wheel the last 6 months.
RB Love I would like to see but I don't think there will be enough reps left- redshirt him.
Irwin I could see them breaking in. Same with DB's little at a time.

Stanford tends to play a lot of close games and runs the fewest plays in college football now. If Love can get 3-5 touches a game, and give Stanford a couple more first downs and maybe one more 20+ yd play per game, it is way more than worth it to play him as a True Frosh. I just don't understand using Sanders as the backup PR & KR guy. Love is a rare combination of speed and quickness that can impact every game, one of the few guys Stanford has that can make a big play on offense due to his pure physical ability. It is more than common practice to have talented True Frosh RBs handle KR duty. CMac may be able to do it, but why have him take the extra hits?

Most likely redshirting.

Given the current TE depth chart, I wonder whether Cotton will end up moving to DE. He played both ways in high school and he won scout team player of the week on defense during his redshirt year. He easily has the frame to add another 15 pounds of good weight and he has enough speed to be a real threat as a pash rusher.

And our apparent starting safeties were recruited as quarterback and a wide receiver....eep.
Converting QBs and WRs to defensive back has worked out well for us in the past-- Richard Sherman, John Lynch, Tim Smith, Vaughn Bryant.

And most recently, Howell and Thomas (Thomas was listed as an athlete, but I believe was a QB, and Howell was an RB, I think). This doesn't' seem uncommon, I assume related to the fact lots of guys play two ways in high school.

We also recruited 8 (or 9?) DBs the last two years, and will be getting another 4+ this year. We do not lack DB prospects.

Very good conjecture. We are loaded at TE and worryingly thin at DL, and Hooper is too good an athlete to be buried on the depth chart.

I remember seeing mention by the coaches of Cotton and one of the other tight ends, maybe Taboada, at fullback.

I thought just Taboada. He's very tall for the position. Cotton is 6'6". I've never heard of a 6'6" FB.

Given this reporting and Shaw comment, I feel better about Love and Irwin getting in the mix this season:
None of Stanford's true freshmen who play offense were included on the depth chart, but that doesn't necessarily mean all will redshirt. Shaw: "The guys that are not on the depth chart may find their way on the field also"

Is there a special teams depth chart beyond the snappers, kickers and returners? I was watching a replay of Stanford-USC from 2011 and was surprised to see Ty Montgomery making a tackle on punt coverage as a true freshman. Perhaps other true freshmen will "find their way on the field" in that capacity?

There is not a depth chart that I know of, but very likely young guys see some playing time on special teams. Andy posted an interview with Alamar/special teams feature yesterday, and it's discussed a little bit. I think this is free (but you should all pay for Andy's fantastic coverage).

I think Shaw has been on record saying that he doesn't want to burn redshirts for kids who will see action only on special teams because that's not enough of a role to justify the loss of a redshirt year. So, as of now, the list of true freshmen we are likely to see on special teams coverage units is likely limited to Edwards, Reid, and Meeks. If other true freshmen get on the field with the offense or defense, then they also would also be in consideration for the special teams units of course.Â

He also caught a long pass from Luck off of a flee flicker in that game. Stumbled otherwise might have been a TD.
