RE: Trivia: SF Giants - BobK - 01-16-2021

The first Manager of the Year award was 1983. A current Manager was one of the winners. Name him.

No Franks No Fox

Boucy Padres Yes
Alou Expos yes
Robinson Yes wrong team

RE: Trivia: SF Giants - Phogge - 01-16-2021

Bobbbbb, I am shocked. From 1936 to 1983 the Sporting News gave out a manager of the year award that was recognized by everybody.

Take a look on Wiki.

RE: Trivia: SF Giants - BobK - 01-16-2021

That’s interesting but not per baseball reference

So let’s say from 1983 on.

Fox with the Giants
Rigney with the Angels.
Sporting News only named one per year prior to 1983

Dark with the A's.
Bristol with the Reds.
Altobelli with I forget Who.
Robinson with the Indians.
Bochy with the Padres.
Alou with Montreal.
Baker with the Cubs.

Altobelli was with the Orioles, I think.

RE: Trivia: SF Giants - BobK - 01-16-2021

Altobelli was the Oriole manager in 1983 but the manager of the year was a current manager

RE: Trivia: SF Giants - Phogge - 01-16-2021

Baseball Reference is not God. They often miss on high schools.

Fox was 1971's Manager of the Year per The Sporting News.

Franks was never Manager of the Year.  He had four consecutive second place finishes during his 1965-1968 SF Giant tenure.  I figured he would have won the award once.

Bill King may be the greatest all around radio play by play guy of all time. He was unbelievable as a hoops announcer.  You could see the game when he called it. Tremendous football announcer. Baseball was his “worst” - and he’s in the HOF.  King was unreal.  A treasure. King had the ability to call even the craziest plays with incredible accuracy, build excitement and entertain at the same time.

He was also a character. Loved opera. Russian literature. Famous for eating bizarre concoctions. Lived on a house boat. SI did an article on him. In i5, they recountva Story where a woman saw him on the street pointed at him shrieking “it’s the devil”. King replied, “yes, madam, and I will be seeing you someday.”

Here’s the “Holy Roller” call.

I believe the Humm Baby himself, Roger Craig won in 87. If not he should have. Craig and Rosen do not get the credit they deserve. The organization was in the bad shape when they arrived.

Dusty had to win one.

Bochy. I don’t think he ever won MOY with the Giants.

RE: Trivia: SF Giants - BobK - 01-17-2021

Dusty won three all with the Giants.

Ok now those future of former Giants who were managers of the year 1983 on

Yes Boucy with the Padres prior to the Giants.

I can’t now cause I looked it up after I posted. One in particular surprised me as I had forgotten that he managed. I suspect you know who I am speaking of.....

Craig got hosed. He was a terrific manager. I loved the way he managed the running game. Both offensively and defensively.

RE: Trivia: SF Giants - BobK - 01-17-2021

Bill King’s greatest moment in broadcasting came on Dec 6, 1968.  Mother’s Day came early when King became the only announcer ever assessed a technical foul.  Look it up - it is a classic call that will never be forgotten by those who were listening that evening.
