I don't know if the difference between 80ish and 100ish pitches today is going to make a difference in a potential game three do-or-die performance, but I don't understand why Esquer is trying to find out in 105+ degree weather.

They better be careful what they wish for, being down 1-0 is a lot worse than 0-1 no matter how you spin it. This is Stanford, not Texas Abliene on a week day game. Those dudes are going to come out tomorrow trying to put up another 7 spot in the first on their arm.
Tech has officially unloaded the bench, let's finish this off as easy as possible and punch a ticket to Omaha tomorrow.
Is it williams tomorrow? if so, we are in decent shape

If Beck is unavailable on Sunday or comes in late and gets lit up, Esquer will need to answer why we are wasting him right now on the bench of TTU for pitches 110+.
I would sooner put some 12-year-old in the bleacher seats in right now than keep Beck in.

Looks like we're going to ride Beck all game to save everyone else for the remaining 1 or 2 games.
Just as I wrote that, Beck is replaced. He was running out of gas as he cruised for 5 innings. Too many pitched from them on.

I hope that we didn't use up all our offense in this one game. We'll need many more to win the series now that Beck won't be pitching.

Lovely baseball by the Cardinal. They said screw the heat, put on the black, and pound the Red Raiders. Beck is a stud. I think coach E wanted him to get his PB 13th K. He did and then he left the mound.

And that was a beautiful play by Stanford's first baseman to end the 7th inning. My first time watching Stanford baseball this season and the team looked good. But if baseball is anything like women's softball about 80% of the result depends on the pitcher/pitchers. Hopefully Cardinal pitching can do enough tomorrow to move on.

Beck with 114 pitches is likely done for Lubbock. But Weiermiller was the only other Stanford pitcher, and he threw just 22 pitches to get the last 5 outs.
TTU used 6 relievers (!), but none of them threw more than 29.
Williams starts on Saturday, and here's hoping that he can keep his post-season momentum going.

No he won’t. Regardless of whether Beck threw 90 or 114 pitches today, he’s not pitching in a Sunday game.
It’s one thing to use Grech the way we did in the regional - he’s a sidearmer with no pro prospects. Throwing Beck out there again under any circumstances this weekend would be coaching malpractice.

I like the idea that the Stanford team left the Red Raiders frustrated. 15-3 left TX Tech with only the thought that maybe it will be better in games two and three. If Stanford limped home and won ~15-8, then the Red Raider vibe overnight would be a lot different.

Since Beck isn't pitching again this weekend anyway, going to the 114 pitch range seemed plausible. Crush their spirits!
I think the only people that really thought Beck might be used on Sunday were the two commentators. They were just babbling away to fill the time. Safe to assume they didn't discuss the team's pitching plan for the series with the Stanford staff since they weren't even at the venue to call the game.

Yep, and he said something similar re Tawa's first-inning HR - maybe "flied out" but he clearly was shocked to see it leave the park.

Stanford was certainly hot today!
At the weather station down the road (on campus), it was 104 at the start of the game, peaked at 109, and was 108 at the end.
Tomorrow, the prediction is 93 at the start of the game, peaking at 96. Humidity 20-30%, winds about 10mph out of the east (blowing in from the left field out of bounds pole).

The discussion of a high pitch count brought back some painful memories for me. The really old timers on this board may recall the 1999 College World Series. Stanford won its first two games, and only had to win a third to make it to the championship. They faced Florida State, which had already lost a game and had to win two consecutive games vs Stanford to survive. FSU won the first game, but I didn't think they had much chance for the second - one of their two best pitchers had, no lie, injured his ACL in the regional post game celebration. And Stanford brought out Jason Young, the ace of the staff. It was a slugfest, and 9 let Young pitch through the eighth after throwing 167 pitches. That was fodder for anyone who wanted to criticize the program.

Imagine, two teams so even matched that each team has a 50% chance to win the game against their opponent. These two similar teams then play a best of three series. In that scenario, the team that wins the first game has a 75% chance to win the series.
Then I am sure in most cases the better team/better seed/home team is the winner of game one most of the time. So when you add in the possibility that in many cases the winner of the first game is simply better or playing at home moving from 75% to 81% is not that amazing.
FWIW - During the WCWS they went on and on about similar percentages on reaching the championship series for the teams that go 2-0 to get to the semifinals. And then introduced similar percentages when FSU won game #1. The 80% team ultimately lost in all three of those 80/20 chances.

No verification needed, there are many examples of pitcher overuse during the Marquess/Dunton years. In the 2003 CWS John Hudgins threw 135 pitches in our first game and then came back on two days rest to throw 131 more (yes, 266 pitches in four days.) Of course Stanford's opponent was Rice, coached by Wayne Graham who was notorious for pitcher abuse. Their "big three" in the 2003 CWS of Humber, Niemann and Townsend were all eventually drafted within the first eighth picks of the 2004 draft but then broke down with serious arm problems at some point.
