RE: OT: Giants 2023 thread - BostonCard - 01-01-2023

More broadly, the Giants were dead last in extra bases taken (advancing more than one base on a single or more than two bases on a double), at 36%.  League average was 41%; Braves led MLB with 50%.

Given that Giants baserunners had 546 opportunities (men on first when a single or double was hit, or a man on second when a single was hit), even being a league average team would have given them about 28 more bases over the course of the year.

At one point last year Giants defense  led league in outs added by shifts. Krukow often remarked on it.  But do you really need metrics?  Davis/Wade/Flores at 1B. Estrada  2b. Craw SS. Villar/Flores/Davis at third. Besides Craw, that’s a poor infield.  Although I’m hopeful Estrada will improve.

OF should be better. But it’s still, at best, average. Yaz very good in RF. Not as strong in CF. Slater is perplexing.  Good speed, good arm.  But he gets bad jumps - especially going back, takes bad angles  and throws to the wrong base a lot. Haniger is, I believe an average RF.  At best. Ditto Conforto.  But average in LF will be a massive improvement.

Bart- jury is out. Wynns wasn’t bad. Pitchers seem to like him.

It’s simply not a good group defensively.  Infielders with more ground to cover is not going to help them. Add the fact that the pitching staff is full of guys that throw ground balls and “hit it to Crawford” is never more true.

Last, but not least, I’ll believe the Giants are serious about improving defense when they don’t move people all over the place, put whatever body they have in left field on occasion and do their continual line changes early on in games. It’s always about platooning to gain an offensive edge. Well, they pay a defensive price. They paid lip service about improving the defense last year. And then they stuck Yermin  Mercedes in left field.

One thing that might help is picking up a left-handed hitting infielder that is strong defensively.  Joey Wendle from Miami would fit the bill. They just signed Segura.  So, he may be available.  Not real strong bat. But he’s very good defensively and he can run

Said before - hope you win the bet   Frankly, most likely outcome is the middle.

In 2021, Giants were #8 in fielding, #29 last year.

Agreed re: outfield, it'll be better. I think that with the shift outlawed, that'll be less ground to cover rather than more. Better for SFG infielders.

Let's go position by position:
1) Flores actually improved at 1B from -1 Rtot to +1 Rtot.
2) Interesting you should mention Estrada. In 2021, he was +1 Rtot, but fell to -13 Rtot in 2022. He'd never been worse than -1 at any position.
3) Crawford's your weak link. -10 Rtot in 2019, -3 in 2021, got worse at -14 Rtot in 2022.
4) Longoria was -1 in 2021, and -4 last year. Villar was +4, he did a nice job. Vosler was -5, glad he's gone. JD Davis was -3, not a good fielder.
5) Posey's defense was superb. Bart's is not. Wynns is slightly better.

So I guess I'd say that I'm very happy with Flores. Crawford has actually been not so good since 2019. He was actually terrible. I wouldn't have minded moving him away from SS, because he looked awful. Hopefully it's an aberration. As for Estrada, through the years, he's actually been a pretty good 2nd baseman. This past year, he was terrible at 2B.  He was considerably better at SS, CF, 3B and LF. Maybe if he only plays 2B, he would be much better, I definitely agree with your perspective there. His range is better than average at 2B.  Longoria and Vosler are gone, JD Davis is a bad fielder, Villar is a very good fielder, and Casey Schmitt, if he comes up, is already playing at a gold glove level.

I think with more traditional positions, we will do better in the field.

Crawford won a gold glove in ‘ 21. He was hurt a good portion of last year.  Looked awful?  Seriously?

Villar hasn’t played enough to make any conclusions on.

Flores is a utility infielder.

Yes, Crawford looked seriously awful. In 2022, the Bleacher Report ran article on the top 25 shortstops in MLB.  In other words, they only left out five of them. Brandon Crawford was one of them, despite the fact that he was third in the league in games played by a shortstop. Among the major fielding categories in 2022, he only finished in the top five in one category: errors, in which he was #3. He had fifty fewer chances in 2022 than in 2021 and nearly double the errors. Team fielding at shortstop, the Giants finished 28th of 30, and oh by the way, the other shortstops on the team actually lifted the Rtot rate.

As for Villar, you're right, he doesn't have much experience. The Giants finished 13 of 15 at 3B in the NL. Villar had 5 errors, the others playing 3B had 17. Hope Casey Schmitt is ready soon. He had two errors in 29 games at 3B in AA.

Agreed, Flores is the very definition of a utility infielder. Whatever he is, statistically speaking, he's considerably better at 1B than he is anywhere else.

Crawford is the anchor of the defense.  Not an issue. He had some injury issues. Struggled mid season, no question. But he’s a 4 time gold glove winner.  He’s also gonna have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.  I don’t expect him to hit much.  But defensively, he is the one guy in the infield I trust.

BTW - check out Giants record  with and without Crawford last year.  That’s a “metric” that matters a bit.

Crawford is a classic “seeing is believing” kinda player.

I don’t care what the stats say, while Crawford may have lost a step over the years, he is still in the top quartile of SS’s in the game.  And, he still has the BEST arm among all shortstops in MLB not named Oneil Cruz.  He made a number of plays late in the season that defied description.  They had to be seen to be believed.

Totally agree, Giants, re late season plays. There were several that were among the best I've ever seen him make.

Spot on.  I love to watch him go to his right, backhand and throw.  He does that as well as any SS I’ve  seen.

He’s not going to be able to play as deep as he did at times. Which will hurt his range a little bit.

Interesting you should mention his arm, and yes, he's got that football QB cannon of an arm. In most prior years, he had considerably more fielding errors than throwing errors, which tells me he's making errors out of effort, a great sign. And his range factor improved over last year (4.14 to 3.92 per 9 innings vs. league average of 3.88), so great for BC.

This past year, in which he played the fewest games in the field of any non-COVID, full-time season, he had considerably more throwing errors than fielding errors (11 to 5). I wonder if his skills are breaking down at age 36. Obviously, I hope not.

As for range, his best years were between 25 and 31 (not surprisingly), but hasn't lost any range since then. in fact, he got to more batted balls last year than he did in his gold glove year in 2021.

I do think that Crawford will return to his .253 career batting average this season. He'll bat against the Dodgers less (.214), Diamondbacks (.222) and the Padres less (.184), also he hits a lot of ground balls (as many grounders as line drives and fly balls combined), so he should benefit from the rules governing positioning changes. I think he'll have a good hitting year.

Agree. Although probably best work was while they were in NY. Carl Hubbell his director of player development.

Always loved his Candlestick story.  Probably apocryphal.  He arrives at about 11 as construction is ongoing. He asks a worker “is it always this windy”. The reply - “No, it gets much worse around 1.”
