Stanford adds to its lead in the 6th on an RBI base hit by Kaneshiro, a hard shot that the 2nd baseman deflected but could not control.

3-1 Cardinal going to the bottom of the 6th.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 05-26-2023

Bottom of 7. Need three big outs. What a game so far. Close it out Card

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - cardfan77 - 05-26-2023

Stanford wins! 3-1

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 05-26-2023

What a game. We may not hit slot but so clutch. Congratulations to the team One win to go. The announcers said rain coming

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 05-26-2023

What a turnaround.  I didn't see that coming.   The weather forecast indicates 70% chance of rain Saturday and Sunday.  I don't see how they will get this next game in.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - fullmetal - 05-26-2023

Congrats to the team for staying tough and pulling that one out!  Survive and advance.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Spiny_Norman - 05-26-2023

Stanford's 1st super regional win since 2011. One more to go!

A rainout tomorrow would allow Canady more rest. Her availability could be important.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 05-26-2023

Very clutch performance today, particularly by NiJaree Canady and Kaitlyn Lim with the game winning double. I am not sure why they didn't consider playing a doubleheader today to ensure at least 2 games are finished before the rain. Honestly, makes me wonder whether that is some gamemanship on Duke's part. (Either that, or the NCAA is not paying enough attention to the weather forecast).

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 05-26-2023

Based on the weather forecast I'm looking at it may be Wednesday or even Thursday of next week until they get the next game in.  IMO there's two ways of looking at this:

Disadvantage to Stanford:  Classes don't end until June 7.  There will be stress in missing classes and tests sitting around in a hotel.  Although in the age of internet communication this might not be as big a deal as back in my day.  Duke is finished with classes and they are at home.

Advantage to Stanford:  If two or three days go by, Canady could probably start game two.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 05-26-2023

Game 2 has been moved to 6am PT (9am ET). This is horrible planning on the part of the NCAA. Stanford already had to contend with a 9am PT start today, now they have to start at 6am PT!

Game #2 should have been played today/tonight (Period). I am sure Duke is not upset over the start time.

This is why home field matters beyond the supportive crowd and any calls the home team gets from the umps. Also, if this game was at Stanford, there would be no weather to contend with.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 05-26-2023

I think they will be able to get the game in at 9:00 am Eastern.  That's before the rain starts and it really is the only option weather-wise at this point.  They should have thought this through a couple days ago and let fans know in advance the plan based on the weather forecast. I'm assuming they have to play a full seven innings. They can't call the game complete if rain starts before the seventh inning.

The question for me; is there any chance this gets televised on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU?

If Stanford wins, it works out ok. If not, it's anyone's guess when game three happens.

How much rain will they play in?

Baseball in rainy areas with artificial surfaces will now play through significant rain. I would think that would be different on a dirt infield.

The forecast I saw predicts some rain starting around 9 am, but real rain not til noon.

They don't have to play all seven innings, provided they have played a requisite number of innings (not sure what the threshold is in softball). But Stanford really needs to win Game #2, because if the series is tied, or I think even if the series were to hypothetically end 1-0 in terms of games, Duke would advance on account of higher seed!

Game tomorrow at 6am PT will be televised on ESPN2. I think TV coverage complicated the decision on moving the game, as there multiple softball games ongoing right now/later in the evening (though the ESPN broadcasters referred to the weather report being bad for Saturday and Sunday as early as the 1st inning today).

The umpires are generally pretty lenient on rain as far as continuing to play. It generally has to be a downpour to stop the contest (to avoid standing puddles in the infield and the like). I think they will get this series in (at worst on Monday, because currently only calls for scattered showers). Scattered showers can be worked around, heavier rain cannot.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 05-26-2023

That would really be a bummer if the series ended Stanford up 1-0 and Duke was the team that got to advance.

If super-regional cannot be completed, the rule of which team moves on is:
0 games played Highest seed
1 game played Winner of Game 1
2 games played If each team has a loss, the highest seed

2022-23D1WSB_PreChampsManual.pdf (ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com)

The rules appear to say one cannot play two games on day one, though the overall wording is ambiguous and there is a typo.
"Super Regional Format. In all two-team super regional tournaments, Game 1 will be played on the first day; Game 2 on the second; and Game 3 (if necessary) on the third day. If there is a weather delay during super regional competition, teams will have three days to complete the super regional competition before the inclement weather policy will be applied."
I think it is actually that teams will have FOUR days to complete the super regional competition. If not, then they cannot play a game on Monday, which would be the fourth day.
The three days thing is actually written down in two different places.

The 2021 rules state (more or less) that seven innings need to be completed for the game to count,
"If play is stopped before a seven inning game is completed and the eight-run rule is not in effect, it will resume at the point of interruption."
The 2023 version doesn't seem to directly address the point directly and only says,
"All games will be scheduled for seven innings. However, a five-inning, eight-run rule will be used in all rounds of the championship, including the championship best-of-three series."

Thank you CTCard. Some poor rules it seems. Hopefully, Stanford can fight through the difficult circumstances and would make a trip to OKC all the more sweeter.

If any coach had his or her team ready to play under somewhat trying conditions, Allister is that coach.  Also seems to have a very loose group in the dugout who seem to keep things a bit more relaxed and fun than up tight.

Dani Hayes, who had 2 at bats and no hits this entire season, just drove in 2 runs with a bases loaded single. Wow.

Stanford Wins!!! Off to the WCWS.
