Aaron Judge hit his 300th career home run this week becoming the fastest player to that mark.  In fact, he broke two marks, hitting 300 home runs in the fewest games and the fewest at-bats.  Who held the records before him (hint: it was not the same player).

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BobK - 08-17-2024

Ralph Kiner is one.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - terry - 08-17-2024

I think the other one is Babe Ruth.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BostonCard - 08-17-2024

Correct, Kiner had been the quickest in games to 300 home runs and Ruth had been the quickest to 300 home runs in at bats.

Gotta be Don Larsen. Don't know the second game, but the first has to be the perfecto in the WS. . ..

The former Giant did start for the Dodgers in the Larson perfect game
1952 I bought a comic book of the other game: The shot heard round the world.
Since Phogge got the answer
Sal Maglie
Reading the comic book I became a sports fan

Another Blake Snell start, another record.

Today, Snell struck out ten batters for a total 55 strikeouts in his last five starts...a San Francisco Giants record by one.

Who held the former record of 54 strikeouts in five consecutive starts?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BobK - 08-18-2024

Juan Marichal

Not Marichal.

Here's a trivia question and answer for a future day: The Giants have had 62 20+ game winners since 1901, more than any other MLB franchise. They've also had 14 Hall of Fame pitchers.

The answer is not any of them. And it was an SF Giants starter of some local renown.

Just for fun, here's the number of 20+ win seasons by NY/SF pitcher:

13 Christy Mathewson
6 Juan Marichal
5 Carl Hubbell
4 Joe McGinnity
3 Rube Marquard
2 Art Nehf
2 Gaylord Perry
2 Hooks Wiltse
2 Jeff Tesreau
2 Jesse Barnes
2 Johnny Antonelli
2 Larry Jansen
1 Bill Swift
1 Bill Voiselle
1 Ron Bryant
1 Cliff Melton
1 Dummy Taylor
1 Ferdie Schupp
1 Fred Toney
1 Freddie Fitzsimmons
1 Hal Schumacher
1 Jack Sanford
1 John Burkett
1 Larry Benton
1 Mike Krukow
1 Mike McCormick
1 Red Ames
1 Sal Maglie
1 Sam Jones
