Unless the Giants win 3 out of next 5 games against Cubs, A’s and D-Backs, then sweep the Padres, there will not be meaningful games in September. But they are 6 back in loss column as it is, with 35 to play. Even if they went 20-15, they would only be 83-79, which won’t be good enough. They need to go at least 23-12 to finish 86-76. They have yet to even go 3 games over .500 this season.

It’s clear the team has a bit more fight in them these days, but all things considered, I’d have rather lost 4-2 than taken lead at 9-7, only to lose 11-12. It just sucks when you can’t stop the other team from scoring.

Unfortunately, it's simple. The Giants just lost three in a row. To continue to play the required .600 baseball, they have to win six in a row. One might say they can spread out making up the additional games, but they are running out of season. The last two starts by the AAA pitchers were pretty much a disaster. Bum getting beat was bad, but an "extra" win from the lesser lights would have made up for it. Didn't happen. So, I pretty much think the need to win six in a row to remain in the hunt. Possible, yes. Probable, no, especially with their current pitching staff.

Slater's weakness is guessing with two strikes. You can't take that pitch with a man on third and two outs. Perhaps he will learn with experience. He makes mistakes in the OF and on the bases too. Perhaps the problem is with his coaches in college and in the minors.

OK, that's a wrap. They came close with two 1-run losses in a row at Wrigley, but the Giants just aren't as good as the Cardinals, Cubs, Nationals, Mets, Phillies, or Brewers, and maybe the D-Backs and Reds too.

There will be no meaningful games in September.

At least it has been a fun ride for seven weeks. September important for Jaylin Davis and for perhaps a couple shortstops and a starting pitcher or two.

Praying for Belt and Crawford to exit and for the Giants to sign the next Walter Johnson.

Slater's OPS is .960, second only to Dick Dickerson. I wish the rest of the team sucked that badly.

Fair enough. Slater has 20 RBIs in 107 ABs. Translated to 535 ABs, that would be 100 RBIs. He knocks in a run on 18.7% of his ABs, better than any of the starters and second only to Alex Dickerson at 22.4%.

Slater's also judicious. His walk ratio is a sliver behind Belt's, which is the highest on the team (14.3% to 14.2% of ABs result in a walk).

He's an average OF and needs to get better, but I think he needs to play more.

Giants win 5-4 and are now at 65-65, four games back of a wild card berth. Solano goes 4-4 and is batting .349. Coonrod gets win, Smith gets 30th save. Longoria had a home run and three RBIs. Bring on the Diamondbacks!!

While it is great that they beat the As 2 straight, they must win the next four games to get back "on track" to win 85. Possible, for sure, but they have to deliver. They have 32 games left. They need to win at least 20 to get a wild card.

Aren't statistics fun?  Choose your small sample and you can assert most anything.  Yep, they've won 69.8% of their 1-run games for the season but only 66.7% for the last 30 days.  If only that were their mean! The chances that they make the wildcard are very slim, but the comebacks have been fun.While I like Bochy, I dread the games in which the only on-air discussions are how many games he's won in whatever ball park they're playing in. I don't think anybody mentioned here that Panda is out for the season, for surgery.  Seemed like that announcement, after Chicago, signaled that management was pretty much throwing in the towel for this year.

My 20-20 hindsight points out that the 2 one-run losses to the Cubs had enormous impact — turn those into wins and the Giants would be tied in the wild card standings with the Cubs today.

But at the same time, losing 1-0 and 12-11 are totally emblematic of this Giants season.

Of course, the fact the Nationals swept the Cubs in Wrigley, the Giants at Third and King, and the Cubs swept the Giants at Wrigley, pretty much tells the tale about how deserving the Giants are for a post-season berth.

The Nationals are clearly the best Wild Card team. The Cubs are realistically battling the Mets for the final Wild Card spot. The Cubs play three in New York against the Metropolitans this week. I will be watching, as I have adopted the Mets as my 2nd team to root for in the NL, since I'm in CT and get SNY.

How bad is Giants pitching?

They've allowed 78 HRs at home, most in a season since moving to Oracle.

They've given up 113 HRs on the road, most in SF history.

All told, the 191 HRs they've allowed is the third highest total in SF history, behind 194 given up in 1996 and 1999.
