Grad or 5th or 6th year: Hamliton, Wilson and Jerome
4th year but could could back however count against the scholaship limit:
Lexie and Lacie
Academic Sr who redshirted: Brown

So Probably 4 openings give Lepolo now a commit offically

I think it's telling that Lepolo didn't publicly commit until after Rice took her official visit. To me the coaching staff was waiting for a response from Rice and after talking to her on her visit maybe she told them she was going somewhere else which then gave Lepolo the opportunity to have a scholarship.

Now, this is pure speculation and may be way out of the realm of possibility (and might not make sense) but it is what came to mind first.

That's a good theory to fit the timeline. But why would Rice spend time visiting a college she had already crossed off her list? If she had made a definite decision why not tell Stanford immediately because she would know the coaching staff has to make other plans. Of course, there's the possibility she came to Stanford and decided while here to cross the Cardinal off her list but that doesn't seem likely.

3 taking extra covid-year = Jerome + Wilson + Hamilton
14 on regular scholarship
1 slot still open

next year 2022-2023:
12 from previous year still on scholarship
2 commits = Betts + Lepolo
1 slot still open

Note: Hull & Hull eligible for additional covid-year in 2022-2023, but how likely?
Jenna Brown is an academic senior and likely graduates this year.

Agree. Now the question is, just how good is she? She's pretty much been off the radar until quite recently. Is she another sleeper?

Lepolo became a target because we missed on so many in this class already. Her offer was available because many targets ahead of her opted to go elsewhere. I don't think this means anything with regards to what Rice will do. We need guards period. Kiki can play the point or two guard if necessary.

Academics did’t make it
They choose elsewhere
Stanford passed

the timing could imply the converse: lepolo knows stanford has 2 or 3 slots remaining (not clear if jenna will return). suppose lepolo sees kiki is visiting, posting photos of having fun with walter rouse. she figures kiki is likely to to use one of those slots. lepolo might well decide she better commit quickly before the remaining slot(s) is/are filled.

Bobk - I think you might be right. how early does Admissions make early acceptances? I’m also wondering if the earlier almost “commitment” was contingent on Admissions and yesterday she received word she got accepted. Otherwise, wouldn’t she have been invited to join the other class of ‘22 class recruiting admits if they knew she had been admitted?

It’s almost impossible to glean anything from one recruit’s decision about what it means for other recruits. All we know is that if we are lucky enough for Rice and Nivar to choose us we have the scholarships for them and that there is plenty of playing time at the guard spots up for grabs.

I doubt this either. The article announcing her commitment had its source somewhere, and that somewhere was unlikely to have been the Stanford women's basketball team. The most likely explanation is that she (or someone close to her) were the source. It is possible that some subtleties didn't make it through (like, "I'm committed, if I get admitted") that would have held her back from widely announcing. It appears whatever that caveat was, it was resolved over the visit (again, likely being told she was admitted).

I highly doubt that Lepolo's commitment was in any way related to Rice (though I suppose that the subtlety might have been "my offer is dependent on whether another player they are looking at commits"). But I highly doubt it. It would be highly awkward to invite two players who are being recruited to the same position and whose commitments would be mutually exclusive to come to the same visit.

Here's my guess: Lepolo is a "plan B", but once enough other recruits no longer became options, it was possible to offer Lepolo regardless of Rice's status. If Rice commits, great, we have more depth at a critical position and Rice can play the two guard; if Rice commits elsewhere, at least we didn't take a gap year at a critical position. Perhaps a lesson there for Shaw.

Rice, Betts, Betts, and Ashlynn Shade (ESPN #5 for 2023) were here this past weekend. Courtney Ogden seems to have been on campus as well.

Lepolo Accepted and now publically committed with Photos of her and likes from players coaches and 912 friends

I would like to formally congratulate Talana LEPOLO. Welcome to the Cardinal tradition of excellence! I feel that she will be a good backup at the PG position starting her freshman year.

So far, Stanford has 3 PGs in its line-up in (1) Jr VAN GEETENBEEK, (2) So HARRIEL and (3) Fr LEPOLO for next season.

If Class of 2022 #2 overall Kiki RICE hopefully commits, I would pencil her immediately as one of the starting guards during her entire four years at Stanford. RICE is a tall PG at 5'11, so I can definitely see her on the floor at the same time with one of the above-mentioned pure PGs, just as we saw the great PG tandem of AZZI and HENNING start for Stanford's first national championship team in 1990 and then again the WILLIAMS and WILSON starting PG duo for last season's Cardinal national championship squad.

And Class of 2022 #20 overall Indya NIVAR would be another major asset since she is described as a combo guard by ESPN. I hope she chooses Stanford, as well, because, technically speaking, there is room for 4 recruits from the Class of 2022.

I find this an interesting read from a regular contributor in the UCONN women's basketball discussion forum:

"I just don't think people are keeping it real with Stanford's chance of landing Rice. This talk of Stanford bringing in 4 guards in the 21 class is also not correct because Demetre although listed as a guard on the roster is not a guard. Rice is a Day One starter at the PG position if she picks Stanford. Stanford would have Prechtel, Brink, Belibi, Jones and Rice as starters. That is 4 starters that have Championship experience. Plus Betts, Iriafen and Demetre coming off the bench.
Betts remains number 1 in the 2022 class and Iriafen and Demetre were top 10 players in the class of 2021 before dropping into the teens in the final rankings. That's quite the squad for anyone to beat and the UCONN frontline would have to dramatically improve to match up. A back court matchup of Jones and Rice vs Bueckers and Fudd is also very close because Rice is the best defender among the 4. I hope Rice picks UCONN but I've always worried that she would pick Stanford."

Starting lineup (for 2022-2023 season) of PRECHTEL, BRINK, BELIBI, JONES and RICE, with BETTS, IRIAFEN and DEMETRE coming off the bench? Hmmmm, I guess I can live with that. Although, I personally will replace BELIBI with a guard like JUMP or VAN GEETENBEEK in that starting line-up to add more speed and 3-point shooting (although, I guess PRECHTEL, BRINK, JONES and RICE are also 3-point shooting threats). How about you?

Yeah, a starting line-up like would be really big. Jones' versatility lets you play her anywhere from the 2 to the 4, but I wonder if it's more likely that we would see Brink, Prechtel, Jones, Demetre and Rice? That would more properly feature two bigs, two wings, and a guard. That being said, it is highly dependent on how ready the younger players are, and how players develop.

Anyways, how about we sign Rice first, and then start daydreaming.

A lineup with Brink, Prechtel and Belibi on the court at the same time seems very unlikely. Tara only goes to two big lineups now and then. Can't imagine a three big. Who of those three would defend a wing?
