Why make the bases bigger. Easier for forceouts but why. Gets the first base man father from the base path.
I don’t get it
Thanks for the summary Giants

It's a safety issue that's been tested in the minor leagues; reduces runners sliding directly into fielders, or running into the first baseman. Also makes it easier for runners to pop up instead of sliding through the bag as is common now.

One thing I wish they would do is not call runners out on replay who involuntarily  pop off the bag by a couple inches.

With the extension of the season by three days, the Giants who had seven games postponed by the lockout, with only have to make-up four games during the season either by a doubleheader or playing on a currently scheduled off day.  I foresee the Milwaukee series being played during the three day extension and the four games v. San Diego being played via doubleheaders and off days prior to the currently scheduled two series in SD.

In other words, the number of doubleheaders will be limited to a handful for SF.

Given the revenue that is lost by playing a doubleheader, I suspect ownership will do everything in their power to limit the number of DH’s played throughout baseball.

Me Too woke up a lot of people. The average man (married or not) has little idea of what some women have experienced. I had no real idea until my wife and I started talking about it during the Weinstein Year. Of course some of the most blatant cases happened in the entertainment industry where most people wear their egos on their sleeves.

If just one of Watson’s accusers is not lying then he should never take another snap.

Supposedly the bigger bases help with that a lot, they have more give.

It's effectively 20 pitchers with guys like Jackson, Brebbia, Long and Doval et al repeatedly shuttling back and forth between SF and Sacramento. With modern roster manipulation an entire additional bullpen stays within the new 5-option limit and thereby expands the pitching staff substantially.

Re Deshaun Watson: cleared by the grand jury of all criminal charges today. Still faces civil suits and the NFL's internal investigation.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - DC 86 - 03-11-2022

Carlos Rodon to the Giants: 2 years/$44 million. (with opt out.)

Love the gamble.

In other news, Kershaw returns to LA.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - BobK - 03-11-2022

Rodon 13-5 2.37 ERA last season but didn’t pitch the last two months.
I like but yes a gamble

Did anyone seriously think criminal charges would be filed?  And btw, if a grand jury couldn't indict, then you know the criminal charges were thin (what's the saying . . . a grand jury can indict a ham sandwich?).   I suspect the defense vigorously questioned any witnesses who testified, using the tried-and-true tactic of sullying the reputation of those witnesses.  The good news is that all of this stuff should remain non-public.

Anyway, this has had the appearance of a move for a financial payout from the jump, which of course is not to diminish the (very probable) reality that D. Watson is a pig and a bad guy . . . just not a criminal pig and bad guy.  Freaking 22 complainants . . . smh.

Very high risk/reward but a wealthy team such as SF should me making these moves.

Watson needs to go to a red state team with a conservative crowd that puts football above everything including domestic abuse. Here's hoping that if he plays he suffers a Theisman-like injury during his first drop back.

Yes.  Opt out after year one.  Let’s hope he exercises it.  It will mean he’s had a good year.  If healthy, he will be there Ace.

They can always do day/night splits and sell separate tix…. As for 13 pitchers, the last couple years teams have been able to add a 27th player for doubleheaders. Not sure if there is anything in CBA to address that. I suspect there is not, but teams will still get to add one.

I know it’s 22 women.  But the timing was always suspect.  When there is  this much smoke, there is usually fire.  Still, if you believe in the presumption of innocence then……

And don’t kid yourself about “progressive” cities and football. Niners we’re happy to give Aldon Smith chance after chance. And the Raiders….. Fans are fans. If the player is elite on the field, not much else matters. Put another way, if Kaepernick was Mahomes, he’d be playing in a red or blue city/state.

As long as we're outlawing the defensive shift in 2023, can we also go back to the batter being allowed to ask for a high or low pitch?  Maybe just use a pitching machine?

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - Sam Leopold - 03-12-2022

Here's what I'd like to know -- how is a "standard" defensive alignment going to be defined, and how far can infielders meander from that alignment before it is dubbed a "shift?"

My guess is that there will be a requirement for two infielders to be on either side of second base until the pitcher releases it or the player makes contact.

More on making up games this season and the ‘23 schedule….

Per The Athletic, the postponed games from the first week will be made up as follows:

The opening series will be played during the three days added to the end of the season (SF will play four games in three days in San Diego) and the second series will be made up on off days or doubleheader’s throughout the season.  This causes a problem for the handful of teams, including SF, that are not scheduled for multiple visits to their opponent’s site.  In those instances, one option being considered is playing the make-up games at the home of the team that is scheduled to host the second series.  For example, SF and Milwaukee might make up some of the missed games at Oracle (with Milwaukee batting last).

The 2023 schedule breakdown:

14 games v. intra-divisional teams (instead of the current 19).  This means two trips to each city instead of three. (56 games)

6 games v. every other team in the league (similar to current structure).  (60 games)

4 games v. a designated team in other league (similar to current structure). (4 games)

3 games v. all other teams in other league (new).  Over a period of two years, every team would visit every stadium once.  (42 games)

I don’t like the idea of giving up 5 games v. LA every year to play teams like KC and Cleveland but I would love to have had the opportunity to see Ted Williams play so I guess the trade-offs are there…..

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - Phogge - 03-12-2022

Well Lex if the Niners acquire Watson then Anne Killion would go all Putin on The organization and she wouldn’t let up. Can’t happen in the Bay Area. The league has made a big push to attract female fans. Letting Watson play would destroy most of that good will.

RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread - BostonCard - 03-12-2022

How about Watson and McCaffrey?
