Thanks for the report!

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - stopandpop - 11-02-2022

At tonight's exhibition game I'm going to be paying attention to Cam at her new position.  I'm going to looking for the following:

1)- Where she initially positions herself; whether it's consistently on the perimeter or does she mix it up.
2)- How many touches she gets in the offensive sets and what she does when she gets the ball.
3)- Movement without the ball and whether her teammates look for her and find her.
4)- Where her shots are coming from: 3-pointers, mid-range, drives to the paint, post-ups.
5)- How many defensive and offensive rebounds she gets. (Tara said she wants more rebounding and Cam was our best rebounder and offensive rebounder)

Yes, we are playing an inferior, undersized opponent and I expect we will see lots of substitutions and limited playing times for our starters (and great opportunities for others), but where Cam sets up and plays on the court should give us a clue on how Tara plans to use her moving forward.

This fan hopes Cam will demonstrate her diverse skill sets and be much more than a 6'4 3-point shooter and dominate in multiple ways.  I want Cam to be a nightmare for the opposing team.

I’m hoping to see Cam get the ball away from the basket, take a couple of dribbles and then shoot a short jumper.  That is the key shot for WNBA superstars Breanna Stewart and Aja Wilson.  They usually don’t get all the way for a layup because post defenders (usually several of them) are keyed in on them but they take and make those shots a lot because they are pretty much unguardable at their height.

More pre-season analysis from ESPN, comments on best and worst scenario for each team in their way too early top 25. Re Stanford, could win it all, or lose in the elite 8; same for South Carolina

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - BostonCard - 11-03-2022

I didn’t read through every case, but it seems like the only teams whose “best case” is a national title are South Carolina and Stanford. If so, that seems like a profound lack of imagination. To me, while South Carolina is the favorite, and it is reasonable to think that Stanford has a good chance, the “best case” for a fair number of teams (my guess is that roughly the top 10) can reasonably hope to win a title.

I would love to believe that only South Carolina and Stanford have a chance at a natty, and that we will get a preview on Nov 20.  But the truth of the matter is that the musical chairs that is now NCAA WBB makes early season predictions even more questionable than they used to be, and teams that are well down the list may become real threats, and teams we assume will be excellent may never jell.  Stanford and South Carolina are perhaps the two most stable teams, so I see why Voepel picked us two, but most other predictions are questionable at this stage.

ESPN just ranked the top nonconference games of the upcoming season and our matchups against South Carolina and Tennessee are #1 and #4:

I'm only looking ahead to Monday, November 7th.  San Diego State is undersized, but they'll be a step up or two from Vanguard.  Will be interesting to see our perimeter defense among other things.

The article lists the best and worst case scenarios for each top 25 team. The best case scenario for Stanford and South Carolina states winning the national championship. The rest of the top 5 is only making the Final 4. Is ESPN saying they think Stanford and South Carolina are the only two real title contenders? Just an observation as I'm not sure how to interpret. Very excited for the season to get underway soon! Let's stay healthy all year!

I made essentially the same article above... to me, that represents a profound lack of imagination.  I wonder what fraction of the time one of the top two teams pre-season win a national title.  My guess is that it is less than 50%.  I think South Carolina is rightly the favorite, and I like Stanford's chances if certain things get figured out.  But if I had to bet, I think I would put my money on "the field".

Sorry, I missed your earlier post. Yes, same thought. I think it's a very wide open year. Sure, there are always favorites but parity the last few season is real in the women's game.

Saw Betts posted something on her IG Story holding the now infamous "Stanford hates fun" banner. Can't be a good look with recruits.

Hopefully this wasn't already posted. I can barely keep up with all the preseason articles, predictions, and so forth. Three of the four writers at SI predict Stanford to win the natty this year.

Thanks for posting. I'd missed this, and found it worth reading. All four commentators have both S Carolina and Stanford in the final four. No one else gets a unanimous prediction for that. I do find the 3 out of 4 saying Stanford will take it all surprise. I think they have a good shot, but much will depend on how people develop, especially the frosh and sophomores.  Also interesting, that one person has Haley as player of the year.

OTOH, the kinds of recruits who'd like to fight the good fight against the evil admins are the kinds I'd most want to matriculate. It's about time our student body starts embracing the counter-culture after a seeming four decade descent into goody two shoes culture.

Hopefully this is a sign of the rise of the resistance.

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - WBB fan - 11-07-2022

Two really good lengthy, feature WBB articles in the SF Chron this morning, one re Cam, the other re the team as a whole going into the 1st game, and both on the 1st page of the Sporting Green. It looks as if we're going to be getting decent coverage in the SF paper this year -- in fact, they've had big, feature, articles on every one of the WBB teams in the Bay Area (Stanford, Cal, USF, Santa Clara, St Marys, and San Jose State).

Maybe, just maybe, this could help attendance.

Don't know if these are behind a paywall or not, but here are the links

www.sfchronicle.com/sports/college/article/Stanford-s-Cameron-Brink-guided-by-basketball-17563233.php

www.sfchronicle.com/sports/college/article/Stanford-women-s-basketball-s-big-roster-17563105.php

Another set of pre-season predictions, this from "Just Women's Sports"

https://justwomenssports.com/college-basketball-predictions-awards-champion-aliyah-boston/?_kx=WI5o64J9xQj4GL7aSKtk0f_PsunMYzFsSG2EgVPecls%3D.Uaprm2

Hope this isn't behind a paywall, but some highlights from it

The three predictors all have South Carolina taking it all, but have Haley as an All American. Interesting re Freshman of Year predictions -- one has Betts, coming off the bench; the other two have Kiki Rice and Nnaji -- Note that ALL three of these possibles listed are in the Pac-12.

One comment I found really interesting -- that Lindy's UNLV could be a surprise team in the tournament. Go Stanford connections!

Speaking of Lindy they just had a baby
Lindy will not be coaching for awhile

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - TheFarm07 - 11-07-2022

ESPN has their own predictions here:

https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/34967074/women-ncaa-basketball-final-four-picks-predictions-2022-23

Though none of their three writers chose Stanford to win it all, two of them had us in the title game losing to South Carolina (the third one had South Carolina beating Texas in the finals).

All of them had us in the Final Four and all of them had Haley Jones on their First Team All-American teams with one also having Cameron Brink there too.

Two of them had Kiki Rice as their National Freshman of the Year.
