RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - BobK - 05-19-2025

Stanford couldn’t put in a hosting bid as the stadium is being re built
For us season ticket holders sad but we knew that before the season
Most of us thrilled with the stadium within the stadium.

That's obviously not true.
1. The NCAA has allowed bids in the past where the event was held at a different stadium than the host school's regular stadium.
2. I question the time allocated to re-configure the football stadium.  The concert is May 31.  The Regionals ended on May 18.  The SuperRegionals will end on May 25.
Farm Aid III had 69,000+ music fans on 9/19/1987 just 6 days after a Nebraska football game.
The Penn State stadium was transformed beginning on Tuesday for a concert on Saturday in 2017.
This 2024 article describes transforming soccer stadiums overnight for a major pop concert.  (Converting TO a concert configuration is easy as the concert people are well prepped to do it.  It also notes that the conversion back to a sports stadium takes more time since the ground condition is a concern.)

The question I'd have of Stanford is why they said they couldn't do what others do.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - BobK - 05-19-2025

Actually it’s true. Thank you thank you kindly

The question I'd have of Stanford is why they said they couldn't do what others do.

a few potential factors in this case

1.  this is the first large concert in the stadium so they might want to allow some extra time as everything will be done for the first time
2.  these concerts are the first two in the Coldplay tour so they may also want a little extra time to work out the kinks in their set up and tear down processes, being the first concerts they have some flexibility on how long they plan to do the set up, their next concert is June 6 in Las Vegas and that gap is longer than the gaps between most of the venues on the tour (5 days here vs generally 3 days)   https://www.coldplay.com/tour/
3.  it seems to me that access is a little more restricted in the stadium compared to other venues given it is below grade and really only has the one ramp to access the field

more speculatively

4.  I don't know if they would be allowed to work overnight to do the setup and teardown, I know they did two shifts during much of the stadium construction but I don't think they did work overnight
5.  I don't know if they had to do any work in the stadium to prepare for the concerts (e.g., more power), if they did that would also complicate the schedule

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - Card10Fan - 05-19-2025

I will say the future of Stanford softball still looks quite bright. We will have a brand name stadium opening to look forward to with a lot to returners (assuming most of them return) Coach Allister has built a strong program.

I hope Stanford can insure they don’t lose the coach.

I have to say that this morning it feels like it was a bad dream but unfortunately it was not.

I think it wasn’t just the pitching, but it was also that Stanford didn’t put in a hosting bid and so arguably didn’t play the series at home.

Yes, we all knew that Canady was gone.  But, I thought our pitchers would be better than they were.  There are a good number of college pitchers not named Canady who whose SO to Walk ration is 5 to 1 or better. That ratio is hardly the be all and end all of the story, mostly we need NOT to walk so many opponents. Make them swing.  Last year Canady struck out 337 and walked 44.  She was indeed a generational pitcher. The year before that.  Her Frosh year Canady was 21 walks and 218 Strike Outs.  More importantly, Vawter had a ratio of 5 to 1.  What we would have given to have had her this last year. The year before Canady arrived, all our pitchers  had far more strikeouts than walks.
This is a stat that has to improve unless we have a great deal of luck.
I have no idea how possible it is to correct a softball pitchers technique to throw more balls that force hitters to swing. Is it talent, coaching or just a bad year.  Hard to say. I just think out young women deserved a better ending.  I am becoming a believer that if you want to win in softball you need very good pitching.  Good hitting won't cover up bad pitching well enough.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - paloalto - 05-19-2025

I was watching one of Texas Tech's games on TV.  FWIW, I want to give props to the TT head coach who had no part in the NIL offer.  The announcer for the game said the head coach told Canady only to leave Stanford if the money she was getting would be life changing.  According to the announcer, the coach actually told her she would be better off at Stanford if the money was not going to change her life.

Vawter was an All-American and is now a professional softball player. She may not be the generational talent Canady is, but Vawter is definitively one of the greatest pitchers in program history.

Our pitching last night, unfortunately, reminded me more of the end of the Rittman era/Hanson era. I hope with more depth and more experience at the P4 level by our pitching coach, we are much improved next year in that department.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - paloalto - 05-19-2025

In regard to the pitching coach did Chung and Prystajko improve during the season?   I don't really know because I haven't examined the individual stats over the course of the season.  Did Chung and Prystajko improve in pitch location, improve any of their pitches, or add new pitches to their repertoire?

They may have gotten better and I didn't pay close enough attention to notice it.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - BobK - 05-19-2025

Chung was an OFer first two years. Pitched a bit last season. So this was her first year pitching much in games I’d say she improved a lot.
But wow so many walks and hot batters by the staff. On the other hand not that many base hits.
I thought they all improved. But we knew pitching would be a problem. Houston led the league in Ks

Yes, she did but that is just part of the picture.  Look at FSU, none of their pitchers had as many SO as Houston but the top 3 in terms of innings pitched walked 7, 7 and 13 over the season. Houston also walked 76.  None of the FSU pitchers had Houston's strikeout numbers, but two had ERA's less than 2 and the other and ERA just over 2. We put more than 100 more runners on base for free than FSU. I am sure the staff will be looking for ways to improve these numbers, against the better teams those free passes are going to cost you games.

Need to have a better balance next year. A few more hits for you hope many fewer walks would be a positive trade off.

reducing opposition hits will help if we do not walk so many. We can't have the other team simply willing to stand in there until they get their pitch or they get walked. As I interpret the FSU numbers, few walks, not so many SO but they threw strikes and forced the other team to swing and keep the ball on the ground.  As I recall, and my memory is aging, but Vawter was very good at this one thing, keeping the ball down and forcing lots of ground balls.  Here are the ACC stats, check them out and tell me what you think.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - M T - 05-21-2025

Too bad Stanford didn't walk what turned out to be the last hitter of the year. Who knows what would have happened with the next batter. Not all walks are bad.

Fifth in ERA in the conference, while not NCAA championship worthy, is not bad.
Counting BB & HBP as equivalent to Singles (which, IMO, they aren't), Stanford was fifth in total bases given up.  Not bad considering the pitching situation.

Anyone have stats of left-on-base (team and opponents)?  Batting average with runners on base?  I didn't follow the team as closely as many of you, but it seemed to me that Stanford bent a lot but didn't break that much.

Run differential (Stanford vs Opponent) the past 3 years.  2025: 222;    2024: 157;    2023: 170

A lot of data here if you want to sort through it.  Don't know if the stuff you are looking for is here or can be calculated from it.

Here comes the portal.
Cal has 9
Arizona 7 and presently has no pitchers
Stanford has one who hasn’t been able to play much at Stanford and not at all this season. Actually she wasn’t on the team this season
