Quote:During the shutdown, USC rebuilt its entire operation, more than doubled the size of its full-time recruiting staff (from five to 11) and launched an in-house branding and creative studio to help athletes eventually capitalize on their name, image and likeness.
Quote:Every Friday in June, USC has taken visiting recruits to dinner at SoFi Stadium. Then, every Sunday, they’re treated to a final brunch at a house on The Strand in Manhattan Beach. In between, there are photo shoots and campus tours, NIL presentations and even impromptu beach trips, all with the intent of selling recruits not only on USC, but all Los Angeles has to offer.
I’ll believe it is producing results when the Trojans start winning championships. Recruiting has never been SC’s problem; they are consistently a top-10 team on that front (with one big exception a couple years ago). It’s what they fail to do with that talent that stands out. Never has a team accomplished so little with so much.
Meantime, this is what Stanford is doing for its student-athletes…

Stanford hasn't had a commitment to the 2022 class in over 6 months. There are now less than 6 months until signing day. All that matters is who signs an LOI, but usually recruiting is about momentum. Stanford seems to be a train that hasn't left the station.
Since the calendar flipped to 2021, I have seen nothing but recruits Stanford is pursuing being reported to have committed elsewhere. This has to be weighing on people in the Stanford Football office. David Shaw hasn't to my knowledge had any post spring press availability to be asked about this topic, his stance on SCOTUS ruling, NIL, etc., so the mystery continues.

Daniels may be great, but has Stanford ever taken a commitment from a QB without any other major conference offer?

Yes he did.
Daniels has been to precisely
zero camps on the circuit, hence not being evaluated at all by the services. 247 put up a 3* rating because we offered (after privately seeing him workout and throw in-person, on campus).
2x Georgia 6A state champ at a powerhouse program, leading last-minute comeback drives in both. All-state lacrosse player. Clearly a good athlete.
Maybe most importantly? Not a gap year.

This is just completely asinine. If you can't judge the quality of a recruit from actual game video in the highest level of High School football in Georgia, you really have no business evaluating players period. I mean seriously, someone is going to make me think that because they couldn't watch a QB - or any position - play in shorts with no contact allowed, that they can't be rated? Makes the whole enterprise a joke.
Having said all that, I was looking at the Daniels hudl to see if anything "bad" or "good" stood out. I was trying to see if maybe his release was slow or maybe he had no velocity on his throws. What I ended up seeing is someone who looked like a legit FBS QB prospect to me. Frankly, I'm puzzled Stanford is the kid's only Power 5 offer.
Honestly, Daniels looks a lot to me like Cal QB commit Justyn Martin.

Good win against Northwestern, Michigan, and Minnesota. The OL class should be good.
If you really want to be technical about it, 2020 LDS safety Scotty Edwards makes this #5.

Looks like we aren't done shooting for more OL beyond the ones still on the board.
RE: Class of 2022 -

SamuelMcF, is that because eligible OL happen to be uncommitted and interested, or do the staff consider OL to be a greater position of need than, say, the defense?

Possibly hedging bets

Shaw has commits on defense? :-p
Seriously, why not offer a solid three star player on offense when you already know that you have a ton of trouble recruiting credible players on defense. You obviously want top talent all around, but that is not happening anyway.
RE: Class of 2022 -
Papa John - 06-30-2021
Thanks SamuelMcF. I hope Shaw might be hedging bets on players who have yet to give a verbal commitment and not on Heyer.
I will say that I was wondering how the new Terry Heffernan, the new O-line coach, would do with recruiting. I'm impressed that Stanford landed an offensive lineman from B1G country who had offers from Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and Penn State.
OG Connor Robertson announces his commitment on Friday, although I imagine hometown team Texas is in the lead. Can HeffShaw pull off two upsets in a row?
