RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 05-31-2022

Thanks for posting John.  Ekstrom is coming back for a covid year.  There should be about 20 players on the roster next season.

Barbra Fontana visiting the beach courts.

Any chance she is the new assistant coach?
(Wishful thinking?)

Fontana would be good for player development and recruiting.  My guess is it was a random visit on campus.  She was a four year starting OH for Stanford's indoor team.

Fontana is part owner with Holly McPeak of Elite Volleyball in Manhattan Beach.  It's a pretty good gig for her.  One of the services of Elite is to help get SoCal prep players into top DI college beach programs so she has a good connection to young beach players in that area. Belardi trains with Elite Volleyball.

Our new assistant is Summer Nash
She was at Florida Stare before volunteer coach at Stanford
Per the staff directory

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 06-05-2022

Nash was Stanford volunteer spring 2021, FSU assistant coach spring 2022, and now back to Stanford. Why would she come back to Stanford for a lateral coaching position? Would Stanford actually pay more money than Florida State?

Right now I'm excited about the U21 Pan American Cup indoor games starting Tuesday in Mexico.  Elia Rubin made the final 12 person USA roster competing for a spot against some really good players. Go USA.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 06-06-2022

Thanks for the info, Bob.

Maybe she found she didn't like Florida.
Or has some ties to the Bay Area.
Or some other reason for coming back.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 06-11-2022

This is a few days old.  Xolani Hodel is on the roster of USAV's Beach Collegiate National Team:
https://usavolleyball.org/story/2022-beach-collegiate-national-team-named/

I'll mention that Canadian recruit Ruby Sorra continues to play in some of the lower-level FIVB events in Europe.  She hasn't been winning, but it should be great experience.

Oh, and as for Barbra Fontana:  she is back this weekend.  Apparently helping coach Stanford's BVB camps.

Wow - knew Ekstrom was coming back, great to hear Dailey and McKinney are, too.

They're going to have a very big roster for 2022-23..

Bell is from Campolindo HS 6-3 class of 2024.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 06-22-2022

I watched some videos.  Bell looks good.  Jackson looks very good.  Fuller is doing an outstanding job of recruiting.  The challenge to move up in the rankings will be to recruit players even better than the current roster which will be difficult.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-02-2022

Beach recruit Ruby Sorra continues to represent Canada at the lower level ("Futures") FIVB events.  Went 1-1 in pool play, lost in the first elimination round in Ios, Greece.  Next week plays in Lecce, Italy.

Closer to home, rising junior Xolani Hodel has teamed with "veteran" beach player Kimberly Hildreth for the AVP Denver event.  They had enough points to make the main draw, and won their first match 21-18, 21-17.  Just watched them lose in the second round on AVP live stream in three sets, so they are now in the elimination bracket.  https://www.youtube.com/c/avpbeach/videos
ETA:  they lost to the #2 seed.

Senior/Graduate Charlie Ekstrom is also playing in Denver.  She and her partner Amy Ozee (Hawaii) had to go through the qualifier.  They also won their first round match this morning (13-21, 21-16, 15-13).  Their second match should be going on now, but isn't being streamed.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - johnbar - 07-02-2022

Ekstrom & Ozee lost in the first round of the contenders' bracket, 21-15, 21-13. They tied for 17th.

Hodel & Hildreth won theirs (-15, -10) and then their second (-14, -19), but lost their third contenders' match in three sets (21-14, 19-21, 15-9).
They tied for 9th.

(The Nourse twins failed to qualify.)

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 07-03-2022

Thanks for the updates.  Next week is AVP Hermosa Beach in SoCal.   The ninth place team will probably get about $400 in prize money.   So Hodel can't accept $200 in prize money per NCAA rules.  However she can accept $1million in NIL money.

$500 for 9th at Denver.

Hodel and Ekstrom are playing (with different partners) at the lower level AVP Waupaca/Oshkosh event next week.  As is Carly Wopat, who hasn't played professionally since 2020.

Lauren Fendrick is playing Hermosa with Zana Muno; Fendrick's first AVP since 2020, though she has played some FIVB events this year.
