Also in one of those funks:  he had a base hit to 2B in short center field overturned on replay.  I was mildly surprised the call was overturned on the video shown.  Regardless, I think Slater messed up his run to first base by taking an extra small step before reaching the bag.  Funk.

Then instead of a walk, Slater gets rung up on a really, really bad strike 3 call (and the first strike in the AB was also a ball).

Get a hit, instead of an out, and a walk instead of (another) K, and the box score/plate appearances look a lot better.

Speaking of funks, Dubon in 8-hole today goes 0-4, with 4 Ks;
Tauchman in the 9-hole today goes 0-4, with 4 Ks.

I don't recall that ever happening with the Giants before, though I'm sure it has . . . or pretty sure, anyway.

Add: Dubon now 0-5 (his fifth at-bat was a swinging foul pop up between home and third base . . . on ball four).
Tauchman now 0-5, with 5 Ks. Honestly, I've never seen worse batting in 8 and 9 holes in a single Giants game . . . ever.
Overall, the Giants have something like 18 Ks. How they haven't already lost this game is a mystery.

Final Add: It's incomprehensible to explain (or even understand) how the Giants ended up with the W in this one . . . by a final of 9-3! But in keeping with above comments, will note that Dubon walked in his 6th AB, and Tauchman went yard! So . . . it got better for them.

One of the wildest baseball games I’ve seen in quite some time wow

lex24 - lex24 - 06-23-2021

Belt injury looks bad. That will hurt big time.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 06-23-2021

Dubon's penultimate PA (he walked later) was one of the worst at bat's I've seen. On a full count he steps away from a pitch 18 inches inside and takes a baby swing for no reason and pops out. He has little baseball common sense.

Tauchman's body language awful regardless of the HR. But Farhan loves him.

Giants scored 7 runs on 2 hits.

Baggerly mentioned that they kept Tauchman over Wade because of options and also because Wade wasn’t going to play much.  Yaz, Duggar, Dickerson against right handers.  Tauchman better suited to be late inning defensive replacement, pinch runner getting limited ab’s. Made sense, actually.

Wade will come back with Belt out. He can play first.

ESPN touting SD- LA as baseballs biggest rivalry.  Give me a break.

Padres first sweep of the dodgers in like forever (8 seasons is what ESPN says, but it seems longer).

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 06-24-2021

Tatis and his mates are having fun. It’s great to be young and a Padre. The other night Hosmer deliberately took a softball swing and hit a ball to shortstop. Of course nobody was playing short. In the same game Muncy hit a bullet into base hit territory in medium deep right but of course Machado was right there to throw him out. Then in the Giants game that night Belt bunted a for a base hit with two strikes against the shift. Nobody was in the third base zip code.

I doubt that power hitting lefties will do much situational hitting. To them contracts and more important than contact against the shift (and winning).

Also, did you see the called third strike on Slater in the top of the 6 th? It was at least six inches outside. Bad calls are one thing, but this wasn't close.

I can't wait for a technological approach to calling balls and strikes.
To be fair, this ump is calling everything with a very wide strike zone. Maybe he thinks the game is over and wants to go to dinner. I think it will be a while before MLB will accept an all electronic balls and strikes call. It would be interesting if the umps had an earphone interfaced to the computer that would make the call. The ump could then pretend to call balls and strikes. That you might sell.

The problem, as I see it, is that they're calling the Little League strike zone.  When my sons played LL, the umpires told us that they called the standard strike zone, plus one extra ball's width all around the strike zone...chiefly because LL pitchers weren't very accurate.  But MLB pitchers should be that accurate.

Here, Melancon pitches three balls outside the strike zone.  The closest of the three was 2.26 inches away...and of course, after the umpire calls the first pitch a strike, he has to call both of the remaining pitches strikes.

Reminds me of the old joke: If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?  Answer: Four.  Because no matter what you call it, a tail is a tail and a leg is a leg.  And no matter what you call a three-inches-outside-the-strikezone pitch, it's a ball.  Period.

Maddox kept enlarging his strike zone every year.

Some Gen-Z producer probably thought that one up.  It isn't much of a rivalry, no matter what the definition.  Since 2013, the Dodgers are 97-49 against the Padres (including playoffs), which is the most lopsided record of any intra-division matchup in MLB.  Some rivalry.

And the Padres have been in existence since 1989.  The Giants and Dodgers have played each other 2,504 times since they were both founded in 1883 as the Brooklyn Atlantics and the New York Gothams (the Giants were always in the NL, Brooklyn joined the NL in 1890).  The Giants hold a slight lead over the Dodgers, 1,262 to 1,242. Now that's a rivalry.

Incidentally, the Gothams became the Giants in 1885.  The Atlantics were also known as the Grays, the Bridegrooms, the Superbas, the Robins and the Trolley Car Dodgers before they settled on the Dodgers.

Final fun facts: everyone knows that the Dodgers and Giants migrated west in 1958.  I always understood that it was because of poor attendance.  But the Dodgers were first or second in the NL in attendance in seven of the nine seasons between 1949 and 1957, but the Giants started hitting the skids in 1953 w/respect to attendance, dropping to 811k in 1953, then 629k and 653k in their last two seasons in NYC.

1989?  Maybe 1969 (think it was an early memory when Pads first playing in the Bigs).

Depends on the ump.  Very few are “rule book” zone guys.  Some favor low strike. Some give a few inches off the corner. A few call the high strike. Varies game to game.

Then there is Doug Eddings. Floating zone. 6 inches outside? Looks good to Doug. Sometimes. Awful.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Phogge - 06-24-2021

We had a guy from North Beach named Lou Anti in the NorCal Umpire Association. He must have been 5'3". Loved him because he called almost everything that didn't hit the dirt a strike. To me Eddings is a God. I hate hitters.

Cubs pitchers combine to no-hit Dodgers. 4-0. 7th no-hitter this year. Record is 8. I think it was set in 1884.

RE: [merged] Giants/Niners 2021 thread - Giants - 06-24-2021

With about five weeks left before the trade deadline, time to play, “If you were Zaidi”.

Would you trade Joey Bart for Max Scherzer?

Note: Scherzer would have to approve the trade and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Scherzer would give SF insurance against the back end of the rotation going south during the second half, allow the Giants to shift Long to the bullpen to plug the long relief hole and give the team a solid threesome in the playoffs - Gausman, DeSclafani and Scherzer.  In effect, the trade would move SF’s playoff chances from “glad to be here” to “who are those guys and where did they come from”.

OTOH, Dealing Bart would be a brobdingnagian risk.  He could blossom into a star for the Nats playing key position and, of course, Scherzer is just a rental.

Personally, I would make the deal.  A very reasonable shot at one more parade with Posey, Crawford and Belt is too good to pass up.  How about you?

Assuming the Giants are still at or near the top, I’d do that trade in a heartbeat. I suspect Scherzer would accept it. SF is a good place to pitch. I doubt the Nats would do it.

Yes. But would the Nats want a young pitcher too?

I think the Nats would want another potential starter and would prefer Harrison or Beck. Maybe Swiney or Hjelle.  I'd do the trade because five of SF's big contracts come off this year.  I'd do it tomorrow.  I think Scherzer would want to join a team on track to win 105 games with the best record in baseball.

Giants now 48-26, on track to win 105.

Currently ranked 3rd in MLB on OPS and 4th in runs scored, 3rd in ERA, 1st in WHIP, 4th in fewest runs given up, 3rd in fielding percentage and 3rd in fewest errors.

Farhan/Scott/Kapler have created a juggernaut...why not add Scherzer?

And just for fun...the A's have the 2nd best record in the AL.  Are you ready for another Bay Bridge series?
