Prosper, who plays point guard by some accounts despite her height, is a very intriguing young player
Great find on Prosper. Recruiting services often compare her to Haley Jones in that she can do a lot of things well. Hopefully Prosper has taken note of how successful Tara and company have been at maximizing Jones' multi-talented skills. And that will be on display this year with Jones at point guard.

Yes we have two and I think we would take any two out of Watkins, Hidalgo and Prosper because they are that good. But that would leave us with only 2 scholarships for the class of 2024 where we are in play for 5 out of the top 10 players according to HoopGurlz and that doesn't include standout players from the U17 team like Mackenly Randolph or Morgan Cheli who we are also recruiting and are ranked outside the top 10.

Five recruits in said class would also eliminate any scholarship openings for Belibi, Prechtel, Jones, or Jump to return for their extra Covid year. I think there's a chance at least 1 of them would want an extra year. (maybe I'm wrong). I hope the coaches are having these conversations with current players now so we don't come across a situation where someone wants to return but there is not a spot available. It almost seems we should have stopped at 3 for the 2022 class (Nivar, Lepolo, Betts) just to have a little more flexibility with recruiting and the extra covid year option. We have been on a roll as of recent with recruiting and it seems we have so many interested recruits and it's hard to make the math work if many of them chose Stanford.

Collins was a sophomore who declared pro before graduating; here we are talking about women with an extra (fifth) year of eligibility coming back, presumably after graduation. There is less of an obligation to hold a spot for them.

Jason Collins was an academic Sr who had to miss two years with knee problems.
Okafor was available in the Spring because no one signed him in November

My pessimist's view (I have no inside info) is that even though we might be a declared finalist (and keep in mind the finalist tally for some of them is still pretty large) for many of these elite recruits, the staff might believe that we won't win out in the end for many/most of them and therefore we are down to a smaller number of openings relative to those who are still publicly expressing interest.
It felt like that happened with the Class of '22 (weren't we in the running for Rice, Gardiner, Nnaji, among others as well?) where it seemed like we had so many interested recruits but most of them ended up elsewhere.

I disagree with this take. Prioritize your existing student athletes over potential recruits who may or may NOT even pick Stanford. There is a reason student athletes were granted a COVID year in the first place.
If Hannah Jump for example (or any of this years' seniors) was upfront and clear with the coaching staff about wanting to return for a COVID year (a player who's improved tremendously throughout her career and put in her time and waited for her moment to shine), she should absolutely be given the chance to return and have a scholarship available. Our senior class is tremendously talented. Why would the coaching staff NOT want them to return. You think Tara is counting down the days until Haley Jones graduates and leaves the program. Heck no or at least I hope not.

Yeah any one of those three for 2023 would be a brobdingnagian win - if we expect none then four slots for 2024 (otherwise three).

What if all three want to return? A fifth year is never guaranteed, even in non-COVID scenarios, and the coaches have hopefully gamed this out. Some players (Jones) would presumably have a spot if they wanted it but there’s a good chance that they have already stated that they would go pro. For some of the other players, it might be a question of opportunity, depending on whether a slot is available or not, and how they do this upcoming year. But nobody should presume that just because they have an extra year of eligibility that a scholarship will be available. The reverse is also true; our coaches should not presume that just because a scholarship is available and a player has eligibility that she will come back for a fifth year. The WNBA, a graduate transfer, and graduating and moving on with life are all viable options for these women.

Tara has a mixed track record when it comes to 5th "extra eligibility" years.
Rosalyn Gold Onwude was not cleared for a 5th year until after Skylar Diggins signed with Notre Dame (there was not room for Skylar otherwise).
After the 2010 NCAA Championship, Tara made statements that had oddly implied she had not yet given Mel Murphy the green light for a 5th year, even though, by then, there were 2 spots open for next year's team. Ultimately Mel did return for a 5th.
Also late in that 2010 season, Tara made comments about not wanting to "burn a redshirt year for Sara Boothe" that implied Boothe was recovered enough (from off season surgery) to try and play some relief minutes for a Jayne Appel who was clearly hobbled by injury (and a progressively worsening injury), but Tara wanted to save the option of having Boothe for the 12-13 season down the road. Ironically, it was Boothe who ultimately announced wanting to move on and forgo the 5th year.
Mikaela Ruef was not held a scholly for a 5th year and was set on paying for her final 2 quarters to get a master's and finish her playing eligibility, but then a scholly opened up when Alyson Beebe had to medically retire.
Fast forward to 2021, Tara very openly encouraged Anna Wilson and Alyssa Jerome to return for 6th and 5th "COVID" years.
If history is the best predictor of the future, we will just have to wait and see!

You should have been at the luncheon when Tara was asked if Ros would get a 5th year the following season. Ros standing there Tara said we don’t know. We all knew it was Diggins first
Last year there was no scholarship limit thus we had 17 on scholarship
A famous Stanford coach told a group do you want a very good to great player for 4 years or a similar for one?
I’m extremely proud that Tara has always wanted to fill all 15 spots.

Jobs and titles are often on the line. Did Monty inquire of Jason? Didn’t Ralston publicly state that he sat down with every player to get to know them and talk about the future? Perhaps the Cardboarder who played for him can elucidate.

along that vein, we seem to have have 3 top-10 (maybe top-5) prospects for 2023 and 4 seniors with eligibility for an extra covid year - 1 top-five and 3 excellent but not top-10.

Ahh, makes sense why she was so encouraging about Wilson & Jerome. I forgot about the lack of scholly limit for the past szn.
And the way you are describing Tara's response about Ros returning is similar to how Tara's wording/tone was regarding Murphy when the topic was brought up (in a video of their welcome back reception from San Antonio after the Final 4). It seemed odd b/c by then there were 2 open scholarships for the following szn, with no Diggins decision waiting in the balance, but perhaps Tara wanted to be consistent and convey that each 5th year offer is still a decision process and not a default option...maybe even out of respect for Ros.
Personally, I'm thinking back to the impressive potential and dominance Lauren Betts showed playing for USA Basketball, and hoping she continues to progress, perhaps into a multi-NPOY-winning type force for Stanford. Thus, I think adding two more talented 23's to overlap 3 years with Betts will help capitalize on her "generational" potential/talent and the heights she can lead the team to during her college career. I actually think Betts's potential is so high that it may have been a significant factor in why Gardiner and Nnaji signed elsewhere.

Well keep in mind one must be a student to play. So if a grad program is unsure at some late point it’s hard for Tara to say so and so will be back for a 5 th year
