To the intuition earlier on the thread, I'm skeptical it's Petersen if the announcement is today, because he's so prominent all the scoopmasters would want to break it immediately. IF the announcement is today someone like Taylor makes the most sense.

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - PVTree - 12-08-2022

Well, I hope the they hurry up and announce the new coach. I want to start doing my research so I know what I can criticize him about.

It could be about having no Division 1 (bowl subdivision) experience, no head coaching experience, out of coaching too long, doesn't get Stanford, a poor recruiter, etc.

This is important research that needs to be done because it will be most likely used for the next 5+ years. :). (sarcasm)

If you’re really good remember former LBer Marty Brill. My hint and I’m excited
No it’s not Marty but my hint

I’d think that the NFL pedigree would be attractive to recruits, and he’s gotta still be a big name in Texas.

Looks like he's a finalist.

Also, Troy Taylor is a finalist.

Quote:Sacramento State coach Troy Taylor is one of the other finalists, sources said.
Candidates the school talked to who are no longer in the running include former BYU and Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman and former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio.

Jason Garrett would be an awful hire, just really dumb.

I would love Garrett whose wife is Brill not Marty

I like the prospect of Garrett a la Pete Carroll model.  The fit could be good here as Garrett went to Princeton so shares the academic ethos.  He probably knows he will never get another NFL HC job again.  My Cowboys fan friend thinks this is good hire for us as long as he stays away from play calling.  According to him, Garrett's strength is player development but star management was not his forte.

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - Treebound - 12-08-2022

So Brill played for ND and coached at LMU - Go Lions.  Garrett has been announcing the Domer games and saw us beat the golden helmets this year...hmmm Bob.   Can he coax fellow Texan Andrew Luck (given Garrett's Cowboy past) to be a graduate assistant for a few years?!

1) I think NFL coaches have big translation issues in college, for a variety of well-trod-over reasons related to recruiting, differences in practice time, etc. Garrett is not especially charismatic and relied on a really complex NFL offense. Does this sound like someone who would do well in college? I think not.
2) Garrett coached for a team that spared no expense and was willing to aggressively invest in just about everything. Does this sound like Stanford to you?
3) Garrett had a well-earned reputation as an incompetent game manager. Again, does this sound like a good idea?
4) No one has been interested in paying Garrett to coach for them since 2020. Does this sound like a highly-valued coach by the market?

For what it's worth, if you care about Ravens fans wanting Roman out, then you should also care about Cowboys fans' absolute befuddlement about this idea on Twitter.

No, he's not a magnetic personality, but I suspect that QB recruiting would tick up a notch if Garrett's the guy. Why not play for a coach who did it in the NFL as a player and as an OC?

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - Bruce Wang - 12-08-2022

A splashy hire like Garrett signals an institutional commitment to fielding a competitive team.

At least can we all agree this is an upgrade over Shaw?

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - washingtonismoney - 12-08-2022

Here are some of the reviews of Jason Garrett from last year as an offensive coordinator:

Quote:New York’s response to the loss was to fire offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. There is zero question this was the right decision. An offense is supposed to score touchdowns—and since Garrett was hired in 2020, the Giants have ranked dead last in offensive touchdowns. In case that wasn’t reason enough for him to be dismissed, the loss to the Bucs was Garrett’s Bizarro masterpiece: bad play-calling, sloppy execution, and a lack of vision for how to put players in positions to succeed. The Giants offense is predictable, sloppy, and unimaginative.

Includes roasting Garrett for not getting play calls in quickly enough -- one of the biggest peeves everyone had with the Shaw offense. https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2021/11/23/22799744/jason-garrett-giants-scapegoat

Could go on and on! He just wasn't a very good coach at the NFL level and has few qualities that would make you think he's a better fit in college, unless you have strong views about why Stanford players should be coached by fellow smart guys. (A view decisively refuted by Harbaugh, Ralston, etc.)

Shaw is a better coach than Garrett. I think this is a downgrade.

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - needle - 12-08-2022

If it's between Taylor and Garrett, I see pros and cons with each.

Has Taylor been talked about in connection to other FBS head coach job openings? At least Garrett--by some accounts, anyway--pursued the Duke opening last year.

I think Stanford needs a coach hungry to succeed at the Pac-level, period. It's not going to be an easy turnaround, either. Show me that Taylor is all in on his career being defined by his time as Stanford coach. If that's the case, sure, he'd have my vote over Garrett. Just not sure that's the case.

(FWLIW, my idea of a home run hire would be Jonathan Smith, and my "plan B" guys would be major college coordinators with a clear trajectory toward being a HC, including Oregon State's OC Lindgren.)

If Garrett wins 5 games in a single season over the next 4 years, he's already better. This applies to any coach.

Sure, fair. But I see a number of people dismissing Roman based on Ravens fans’ views. If you think that’s meaningful, you should also find it meaningful that I don’t know a single Cowboys fan, on- or offline, who thinks Garrett is a good coach. In fact most think he’s a terrible head coach.

I think you are extremely wrong and it mainly boils down to your misapprehension with regard to #1. NFL head coaches translate spectacularly to college, or at least as well as any cohort of candidate. There of course will always be inherent uncertainty, fit issues, season of life issues, and so forth. No such thing as a sure thing. But somebody like Jason Garrett is MUCH more of a sure thing than somebody like Troy Taylor or Brent Brennan, and the most basic reason is that you are wrong NFL doesn't translate to college.

Those who can even get to mediocre in the men's league find it child's play to exceed their NFL success in college. For every Lovie Smith who fails in college, there's Pete Carroll, Jim Mora, Chip Kelly, Matt Rhule, Butch Davis, Steve Spurrier, and Rich Brooks who find college much easier. Because it is. When you have the street cred of having been an NFL head coach, the cachet you have in living rooms on the recruiting trail is indescribable. The rolodex (and name recognition that draws people to you) you can leverage in building a staff far outstrips your competitors. The egos you have to deal with seem quaint. The game day and Xs and Os machinations are like Neo operating in the matrix.

Those who think a coach's level of success in the NFL even comes close to approximating his upside in college don't understand the difference between the men's league and college. Look at Carroll. Or Saban. Or Mora. Or....ummm just about everybody.

Bob is talking about Marty Brill, mid 60's Stanford linebacker not the Domer player and coach.
