Pepperdine, maybe.

I would have guessed Chapman.

My first thought was Loyola Marymount, but Pepperdine and Chapman would be better fits...

Los Angeles County Department of Corrections!

To provide (a semblance of) balance to the pairing, maybe the Los Angeles Ethics Commission?

Will there be an NCAA? If there is to be a "super conference," how will its members be picked? How will non-football sports be funded? What will be the relationship between the athletic and academic enterprises in universities?

The passivity I see from our university is unbecoming.

Stanford's administration is so opaque, who knows what is going on. Stanford News Service posted an interview with Jerry Yang yesterday. BoT President commenting on all of the recent leadership changes at Stanford. An opportunity also to comment on the state of Athletics. But there was nothing. So we are left to try to read tidbits from other sources around the internet which may or may not be true.

However I think that Stanford is in a weak position to influence the future of college football, and the BoT, AD and their advisors know it. The drivers of college football right now (and therefore of college athletics) are the SEC, Big 10, ESPN and Fox. Stanford has a weak hand with all of them. If a super league or super conference was formed now for college football, Stanford would not be included. To be honest, I don't know that Stanford can do anything to change that situation. But Stanford is not giving in to my defeatist attitude and is trying to find a lifeline for both football and the rest of Athletics by pursuing membership in the ACC. I don't see passivity at all.

Adelson is frequently a guest on ACCN sports shows and a pretty reliable source. This tweet was done approx noon Thursday.

Hoping NC State wakes up and sees the light.
Otherwise, good chance they’ll be asking us to join the PACMWCAmerican in a few years.

Good summary Branner and Spiny. Really not sure who is running the show at Stanford now but the prior leadership team was atrocious in so many areas, including athletics. They were disinterested, hostile and/or incompetent. Now Stanford will be spending much more on sports than it ever planned for because of this malfeasance.

I wish Stanford had led change at the NCAA level and hived off football from all the other sports five years ago. NCAA controls the championships and TV contracts for all the other sports with the MBB tournament being a big revenue generator. Other sports (WBB, WSoccer) may get larger TV contracts in the future for their tournaments. In this structure the NCAA would not have to deal with football and all the shenanigans that go on with this sport and could impose some order on the other sports by controlling the championships and TV contracts.

I also wish Stanford and like minded schools had put a stop to the NCAA's senseless strategy of litigating against the rights of student athletes. Stanford should have been at the forefront of respecting the rights of their student-athletes. A compromise that would have been beneficial to student-athletes and the schools could have been agreed to long ago. Instead we have schools basically paying players under the guise of NIL and massive turnover in teams every year via the portal.

As of now Stanford is wounded, with their sports credibility in football shot (and all its other sports dependent on where football ends up) and no meaningful leadership in place to make change at the NCAA level.

Sure would be interesting to know the percentage of Stanford's constituency (comprised of people who care about Stanford in any way) who cares about anything Yang said, and the percentage of people who care about sports and by extension the conference affiliation stuff.

RE: Stanford to the ACC? - dabigv13 - 08-31-2023

Not awesome, if not a surprise.
Quote:On Thursday evening, UNC-CH Board of Trustees Chair David L Boliek Jr. confirmed he and vice chair John P. Preyer sent out a statement against expansion, citing numerous concerns -- including long-distance travel and an inability to address "the income disparity ACC members face."

"The strong majority of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Board of Trustees opposes the proposed expansion of the Atlantic Coast Conference to include Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Southern Methodist University," the statement read. "Although we respect the academic excellence and the athletic programs of those institutions, the travel distances for routine in-conference competitive play are too great for this arrangement to make sense for our student athletes, coaches, alumni and fans. Furthermore, the economics of this newly imagined transcontinental conference do not sufficiently address the income disparity ACC members face. Without ironclad assurances that the proposed expansion serves the interest of UNC-Chapel Hill, we believe it should be voted down."

The ultimate vote belongs to UNC Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz.

Does NC State break with UNC or does the ACC dalliance die at tomorrow's meeting?

RE: Stanford to the ACC? - marchballer - 08-31-2023

I read this statement as we’re in. No need to release a statement like that unless you believe the vote is in to approve Stanford/Cal and SMU. That’s certainly some peer pressure to get a no vote from at least UNC.

ACC, here we come.

"The ACC presidents and chancellors met on Friday morning and voted to add three new schools -- Stanford, Cal and SMU, sources told ESPN. It will bring the league to 18 members, 17 of which will play football full time in the league. The additions will be in all sports and will begin in the 2024-25 school year."

RE: Stanford to the ACC? - Lorcan - 09-01-2023

Send flowers to NC State. Apparently they flipped their vote.

RE: Stanford to the ACC? - Mick - 09-01-2023

It was the only logical move. Otherwise, FSU and Clemson would've USC/UCLA'd the ACC...

Sources: ACC votes to invite Stanford, Cal, SMU

It is odd that they fought Stanford and Cal for so long, two storied programs.

Can you provide a link?

Relieved more than excited... But this was the only reasonable option left after the past month...

And I'll admit I am already pretty stoked and seeing BB games at Cameron. Now just need to get a new MBB coach...

RE: Stanford to the ACC? - Solo77 - 09-01-2023

As someone living in the eastern time zone, looking forward to fewer football games starting at 10pm.

And also going to Death Valley and hopefully a Duke/UNC basketball road trip

With SMU in mix we will get to see regular dose of basketball in Dallas.  Not ideal geography but from a selfish perspective , this is very good news .

This is classic example of making chicken salad out of chicken #$&**.   Hats off to Yang and Condi!  I only wish they had been in charge earlier .

I think this gives .Stanford a seat at the table when next realignment occurs. We’ve gone from SOL to having some control over our own destiny. In the meantime , we will be involved in Power 4 sports.   Good work, folks, and thanks for the leadership. We needed that.
