I’m so unimpressed with Zaidi’s people skills. John Shea at the Chronicle interviewed JD Davis and reports that Davis has had no contact from management since the Chapman signing. This is getting reported right after Crawford publicly zinged Zaidi for telling him he could come to spring training as him a non-roster invitee. The old regime certainly had its flaws, but respecting the veterans wasn’t one of them. Letting Panda have a few at bats in camp isn’t going to paper over what now looks like a fundamental leadership problem. I mean, we recently found out that Zaidi hired a dude who preferred to communicate by text.
I’m contrasting this in my head with the 49ers situation when Trey Lance lost the backup job to Sam Darnold and Shanahan offered to trade Lance to get him into a better situation and also publicly blamed himself for Lance not developing as planned.

Was thinking that same thing. Grim. Also thought of the scene in Moneyball when Billy Beane encourages the Podesta-ish character to speak directly and candidly with a ballplayer to let him know he'd been traded. Apparently that was before Zaidi's time...
On slightly different news, Susan Schlusser reports that the Giants are still in on Blake Snell. I don't know if the Yankees pulled their 6 year/$150 mms. offer, so I don't know what Snell expects or wants.

I do know that with Chapman, the Giants projected total tax allocation is a sliver over $215 million, and the tax threshold is $237 million. And if they trade JD Davis, that will free up an additional $7 million. They're overloaded on infielders and young talent, so they could sign another pitcher or two.

RE: SF Giants 2024 -

This has been the most fascinating off season and early spring training that I can recall in ages.
FZ has made moves that help the team quite a bit. But restrict the flexibility he loves. Soler is an everday DH. Chapman another corner infielder.
As it currently stands their 6 IF spots are taken by Wade, Flores, Estrada, Davis, Chapman and either Luciano or Ahmed.
That is 4 corner infielders. Absent injury (which no one wants) as of today, Estrada is likely the backup SS with Flores playing second base on the days Estrada slides over or takes a day off. That is not good.
There has been some talk of Chapman playing SS. Hopes that talk ends quickly. It defeats the purpose of signing him. He’s an elite 3B. In the Brooks Robinson class.
FZ assuredly has a plan to move one if the other three corners -Wade, Flores, Davis.
Flores to me is the least likely. He is, by my reading of the tea leaves, perhaps the most respected player in that clubhouse by his teammates. And he was their best hitter last year. Further, he plays 1B, 2b and 3b. Albeit none particularly well. Wade is a possibility. But he’s had injury issues - and he’s their only LH hitting IF. The Giants are RH heavy.
Davis is the most likely to go. Although he could play first - and he is not a platoon guy. He hits lefties and righties equally well.
One problem - teams know the Giants situation. So, the return could be less. And it’s not as if any of they here, traded alone, would bring back much.
Perhaps FZ has a blockbuster - Davis, Bart, and a prospect or two for a SP or a MIF/SS But I think that is unlikely.
Whatever happens, it’s been darn interesting.
RE: SF Giants 2024 -
Mick - 03-05-2024
What, no Pablo Sandoval? :D He's 0 for 10 with 7 strikeouts, so most likely not.
I like your read on the infield. Chapman is a Brooks Robinson level third baseman -- two Platinum Gloves, two gold gloves. He shouldn't be at SS, period. I think Ahmed will make it...he's a gold glove caliber infielder, and the pitching staff is a ground ball team. They finished dead last in fielding (Rtot) last season. Incidentally Ahmed, Bart, Bailey, Wade, Flores, Wisely, Murphy, Sabol, Schmitt, Davis all have zero errors. No pitcher or catcher has had an error yet, that was a weak spot last year.
I'd been thinking that JD Davis and Joey Bart, plus a prospect or two will get you a starting pitcher. The Mariners seem to have a surplus, and they trade with the Giants a lot. Their catcher hit 30 HRs last year, but after giving up Tom Murphy to the Giants, they need a backup, and JB is good behind the plate. They had a good third baseman last year, Eugenio Suarez, 22 HRs, 96 RBIs, but he's playing for Arizona now. They don't have a real 3B, they're looking at a collection of players. JD could slot right in. And they should feel good about their SFG trades, Mitch Haniger is currently leading Seattle's team in avg (.500).
Let's talk experiments. The Jung Hoo Lee experiment is working out great. He is as advertised, great contact, great in the field, great on the base paths. Just as an aside, his HR (109.7 mph off the bat) would have been an HR in every major league ballpark...except Oracle. Jordan Hicks experiment...he's pitched 4 1/3rd, given up 7 hits, two HRs, walked three, two earned runs. Nick Ahmed experiment...Ahmed is about to turn 34, but he's hitting .625 this spring, and leading the team in slugging (1.375) and OPS (2.042). Five hits in eight ABs, two of them home runs, no strikeouts. Reading between the lines, he decided to come to SF because SF gave him the best chance to be a starter...and he
really wants to beat the Diamondbacks. No love lost. Apparently his and Crawford's "no communications" stories mirror each other. Ahmed is fully recovered from a 2022 shoulder injury and is highly respected in the clubhouse. And Baggs is saying that Luciano needs time in the minors to fully season. He's only 22. I think Ahmed makes it and starts at shortstop.
Fielding. Giants have 8 errors in ten games, which mirrors their league-worst defense last year. The good news is that no one has more than one error. Bad news is that each of them expect to play a lot. Estrada, Villar, Lopez, Conforto, Matos, Meckler, Luciano and Fitzgerald.
Two interesting players heading for the minors. Ismael Munguia is 8 for 12 this spring, two HRs, 1 strikeout, three SBs, 1.859 OPS. Plays in OF, maybe headed to AA or AAA for the first time. Makes good contact, lots of doubles, few HRs. Some speed on the basepaths. Trent Brooks is an interesting spring story. First baseman, 29 years old, five hits in 11 ABs, 0 strikeouts, 4 RBIs. He won't make it, but he's been interesting to watch. Scuffling in AAA, maybe the definition of a AAAA player. Makes good contact, doesn't strike out much, has some power.
RE: SF Giants 2024 -
Giants - 03-05-2024
At this point, it appears Ahmed will be the #1 SS. I think Luciano needs more seasoning. He may start the season in Sacramento.
I think Davis can count on being traded. He has no position with the Giants. SF will find him a team that will give him a shot at starting. Flores/Wade will platoon at 1B, Estrada at 2B, Ahmed/?? at SS and Chapman at 3B.
Outfield — Conforto (LF), Lee (CF) Yaz/Slater (RF) with the fifth spot still to be determined.
C — Bailey, Murphy.
Pitching: It is anyone’s guess. Both the SP and Bullpen have many ???? (especially with Hjelle now out with a sprained elbow). The only thing we know for certain is Webb is the #1 and Doval is the closer.
RE: SF Giants 2024 -
Leftcoast - 03-05-2024
It may be a Spring phenomenon but I'm starting to feel more optimistic about this season.
Improved defense, especially on the left side of the infield-Check; Add a power bat-Check; Improved speed on the basepath-Check; a manager who can build clubhouse synergy-Also a check. I might get absolutely giddy (at least by recent standards) if the front office can add some opening day pitching.
Among other things, these moves give fans hope and a promise of in-season excitement. Not a bad off-season at all if we use a referenece point OTHER than LAD. Of course the Dodgers are in our division so ... final grade TBD but the arrow is trending up.

Luciano struck out three times today, and he's batting .077. Eight total strikeouts in 13 plate appearances. Yikes.
Does Soler count as the fifth OF spot?
BTW, Philly just signed former SFG draftee Zack Wheeler to three years/ $126 million. Wheeler won his max of 14 games in one season. He won 13 games in a season once. He won 12 games. Twice. And he won 11 games, twice. His ERA has increased each of the last two years, to 3.61 last year.

Good question. It depends on whether you want to carry 12 or 13 pitchers. I’m guessing SF will carry 13 to start the season because of the lack of SP’s who can be counted to go 7+ innings. Therefore, pencil Soler in as the fifth OF.

Soler is definitely the 5th OF. Although he won’t play OF much. Fitzgerald, if he grabs the 26th spot can play essentially everywhere. Wade can also play corner OF.

Due to his salary, there is a good possibility that Davis may clear waivers and become a free agent.
