Curry was the biggest star at Cal and the education is top notch, but she is still going. I feel bad for their program. I highly doubt Charmin Smith was an abusive or difficult coach, in fact if the Cal message board is correct she has been a players' coach. Wants a bigger stage? Tired of losing? Maybe she thinks she is a WNBA level player (doubt that very much) and thinks a different program will get her there? If she is good enough for the pros, they would find her just fine at Cal. Oh well. If this season is another round of musical chairs with transfers throughout the sport I will hate it. I assume I am about to hate it.

Giving up that education to go...where? I hope she makes a good decision with regard to the education part.
On the basketball side, giving up being part of a program on the rise to go...where? She is currently the star of her program and, from all appearances, is strongly supported and promoted by her coach. I'd hate to see her go somewhere where her contributions are not appreciated.

She is from SoCal so maybe UCLA or USC?

UCLA seems unlikely given that it has Rice and Londynn Jones, both a year younger than she is.

Good point. So hard to predict sometimes! My HW shows she originally selected Cal over SD State, Utah, UW and ASU? But she was not as highly ranked so could be that bigger names are interested in her now.

IMO it is becoming almost "due diligence" to enter the transfer portal in order to test the waters on what is out there for you. Your current school may not like it, but since so many athletes are "on the move", it may soon not be much of a "big deal" that your entire team enters the portal. Most of them may intend to stay where they are unless they get a "really great offer", which few will. The portal is only necessary because otherwise the players can't "legally" deal with other school's coaching staff. How that relates to educational opportunities is obvious. It doesn't. It will just be a "job fair".

I struggle with this dislike of students choosing to transfer. I can understand not like the new transfer portal which has created the ability for schools to pluck players in which they are in need; I understand that part mainly because Stanford isn’t able to do so in the way many schools can. And it may well put us at a disadvantage. But things always change…and those that adapt move forward.
But my main concern is why the athletes get flack about it. They spend years deciding what school to go to, starting probably around 14-15. Fast forward to 20. Things change. What you want in life and the place you see yourself can change. These athletes have worked very hard to put themselves in a position to use that to their advantage … if their athletic skill can put them in a place they believe will make them happier, good for them! I just don’t understand why many view it as a bad decision. It’s their life to choose how to live.

I am somewhat sympathetic to a single transfer, particularly if there has been a coaching change, or if a student's academic plans have changed in a way that their current university cannot support.
But I also think students, like all of us, need to learn the importance of commitment and loyalty. In fact, that used to be one of the reasons that intercollegiate athletics were said to be justified at all. I felt very strongly that universities should make 4-year commitments to their student-athletes with guaranteed scholarships. But I also feel that under normal circumstances students should make similar commitments to their universities. Reasonable exceptions, of course, but they should not be the rule.
What the current environment is teaching is that student-athletes should constantly be shopping for a better deal, whatever their commitments might have been in the past. It is a deeply me-first culture. I see why that is entirely appropriate for a world of business and employment--but those are not the values of higher education. Those are the values of minor-league professional sports, and belong there.

Yup. I don't get why this is not required. My admiration for Tara grew when she kicked players off of the team yet still honored their scholarships. But it shouldn't be up to the coach, but rather required in the NCAA. And students leaving after, say, 3.5 years to go pro, should be given an opportunity to come back and complete their degree without having to pay tuition.

I agree with 81Alum: that both universities and athletes should be held responsible for their commitments to a contract. A coach has to take the long view when she offers a contract to a player — that’s what it takes to build a team. Players are basically given a promise of a four-year contract with no commitment in return. A player should be required to make a similar commitment to the school, with certain reasonable exceptions.
We seem to be living in a wide open system, much like the old west, without a set of appropriate rules. This will change, the pendulum shift that currently favors the player will surely go through a necessary correction in the next year or two.

There's another element to all this that concerns me. In theory, and sadly it is a theory in many places, these are
student-athletes. But changing schools is always a disruption to education, sometimes for the good, sometimes not. If a student is serious about his/her education and past his/first year, pre-requisites have been taken that are relevant to where the student is going, and may not be relevant elsewhere. Majors may have been chosen and prepared for, relationships with faculty developed, etc. I have difficulty seeing how the revolving door of a transfer portal does not damage the education aspect of going to college. One of the reasons that I love Stanford WBB and other Stanford sports is that the athletes are genuinely also students, concerned about their education, having chosen Stanford for academic reasons as well as athletic ones. Sadly, this is not the case for many other universities -- and when this is not the case, the ties to the school are less strong and the transfer portal is tempting as a way to further athletic dreams that are more significant than academic ones.

The rates of transfer in and out of Arizona are way beyond even the ridiculous levels the sport has come to expect. Anyone have an explanation?

Barnes was happy last season when a bunch transferred out because she wanted to load up on transfers coming in. That did not work out so well for her. Despite how it looks and how she has been promoted, as a hot, player-friendly coach, all these transfer hint that she may not be all that she is cracked up to be. I used to be a fan. No longer. I thought she threw her players under the bus when they had a tough loss to Stanford at their place. Tons of transfers. Under achieving team this season. Bleh.

Interesting stat from the Athletic: 15 of this year's WBB sweet 16 teams have at least one starter who is a transfer. The one team that doesn't have a transfer starter does have a transfer with a big role coming off the bench.

I find this very, very depressing! To me, it the antithesis of what college sports should be about.

Is South Carolina the exception? If so, does that help our spirits? Then again still so disappointed for the team and especially Cam. Time for guards to be handed the keys to the car - wonder if our style and unwillingness to do so is what has prevented us from getting the great, aggressive guards (too many to list) and if being more flexible will pay brobdingnagian dividends.
