Who can possibly forget it? My Dad was an original Niner season ticket holder and one of their biggest fans. It was his birthday and he was absolutely devastated when he got home. I’ll never forget how disappointed he was. The Montana era was great but even after Super Bowl wins he still talked about the ‘57 game.

Not a Dallas fan. I had a brother-in-law from Plano, TX...a Stanford grad, as it happens. He told me, in all sincerity, that he felt it was important for America that the Dallas Cowboys have a winning football team. For my son's second birthday, he sent me a full Troy Aikman outfit; helmet, jersey, pants. I waited until my son was in full tantrum in that getup, took a picture and sent the photo to my BIL, letting him know that I captured Troy Aikman's essence.
I hadn't realized that Dallas hasn't been back to the NFC Championship Game since they won the Super Bowl in 1996. This will mark the 28th year of the NFCCG drought for Mr. Jones. They're 8-6 since the start of the NFCCG's, but 0-0 since 1997. Niners are 7-11 overall in NFCCGs. Honestly, I didn't realize the Niners had been to 18 NFCCG's compared to Dallas's 14 or that SF has been to the NFCCG seven times since Dallas's last NFCCG...and that this year will probably make it eight.
Maybe Niners-Lions. Revenge game for Niners. ‘57 still hurts…..l

Packers looked awfully good playing the Cowboys (who seemed pretty good coming in) and the Bucs looked good playing the Eagles (who were an abject mess). This will be Mahomes and Maautos first road playoff gig (Super Bowls at neutral sites) although it should be warmer at game time in Buffalo than it was in KC.
We'll see. Time for the Niners to put up or do whatever teams do that fall short of what they think they can do.

Was just thinking about how well Stanford alum John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan work together. Must be a relief to the York family after having an initial taste of post-DeBartolo greatness when Harbaugh coached them to a Super Bowl, then Jed fired JH after his terrible 8-8 year (sarcasm alert). Harbaugh went 44-19-1 with the 49ers, 5-3 in the postseason. Predictably, Trent Baalke won the battle, and off goes Harbaugh to UMich and an 86-25 record, and off go the 49ers to 5-11 (Tomsula) and 2-14 (Chip Kelly). Trent, somehow, remains GM for two more years and leaves the 49ers almost completely bereft of talent.
Entre Lynch and Shanahan. On the same page from the very beginning, they endure two tough years before they can completely reface the roster, and have been in the NFC championship game three of the last four years. And now that Shanahan has his preferred quarterback, they will hopefully get to another NFCCG, and ultimately a Super Bowl win.
Somehow, some way, Baalke was lost in NFL assistant wilderness, joins Jacksonville in player personnel, becomes player personnel manager, interim GM, then GM. They've gone 3-14, 9-8 and 9-8 on Baalke's watch. Baalke lucked into Coach Pederson, who, like Harbaugh, had three straight playoff years, followed by one non-playoff year and he was let go.
Makes me think of Farhan. He couldn't produce or sign effective players, yet against all odds, his coach misses the playoffs by one game in his first year, then wins the most games in the 137 year history of the franchise. Players fail in the next two years, so of course the manager has to go (although they kept most of his staff in one capacity or another). Too bad the Giants tanked after having been 12 games over .500 and in 3rd place in the NL after 100 games.
The Giants hired a new manager and against all odds, extended Farhan so that they'll both be on the payroll for three more years. They sign one (1) free agent of interest and pay double market value for him after having missed out on the top two free agents for...well, let's just say every year that Farhan has been there. At least they got a manager who couldn't win with eight multi-year All-Stars in the field, another player who finished top-5 in MVP voting twice, and multiple Cy Young winners.

Taking each situation one at a time:
Yes, Zaidi has been a big disappointment. There is no getting around that. He is a a big time 0-for in his effort to sign a premier player. His tinkering around the fringes is getting very tiresome.
Despite their poor overall track record with high draft choices, Shanahan/Lynch have had extraordinary success with their mid to low selections (and, of course, we would be cursing them for choosing Lance had they not gotten lucky by seeing every other team pass on Purdy through seven rounds).
Having said that, it is all about winning championships and the 49ers are a lot closer to that goal than the Giants……

I think I'll stick as a 49ers fan since Brodie and a Giants fan since Mays. I particularly like it when Stanford grads play on the Giants. So I'll stay a fan of Slater, McCaffrey, Beck, etc.

Not pretty but to steal an NCAA basketball truism, "Survive and advance".
But wow, the defense was both awful (wide open receivers, slow to stop the run/seal the edge) and incredible (Stop on 4th and 1 (and 3rd and 1), two critical interceptions). Brock will have better days but he did put together his best drive when it mattered most. On to the NFC championship.

Well, they won. How I really don’t know. The defense didn’t play well until the fourth quarter. In fact they played pretty poorly until the fourth quarter. Purdy had one of the worst games I’ve seen him play for most of the game. The offensive line got beat most of the game. Deebo was hurt and out.
Shanahan screwed the pooch with the clock management at the end of the first half and then had some of the more bizarre play calls I can ever remember. Number one being starting the second half handing the ball to Jennings.
He also seemed to forget about McCaffrey at times. Which is pretty damn hard to do.
And then there is Greenlaw. The guys an unbelievable football player. But he does some of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. I was screaming at my television set for him to get on the ground after that interception. You could see 49ers screaming at him to get on the ground. I thought they should have Three Stooges music in the background as he was Whoop whooping his way running all over the field. Oh my goodness.
But they move on.
If the 49ers are gonna win the Super Bowl, this so-called elite defense has to actually start playing like an elite defense. In my book they’ve been far from it most of the year. And they have had a particularly hard time getting off the field. They’ve been terrible on third down.
First time in Shanahan‘s history, that he’s won a game as a head coach down by more than five points entering the fourth quarter. Which is amazing. And good for Purdy. Led a great drive when he had to on a day when he wasn’t very good. That is what great quarterbacks do.

One of the talking heads noted that "Brock Purdy does not like to throw a wet ball." True. No one does, nor did his counterpart who had thrown one interception in the last nine games but threw two interceptions tonight. Purdy looked more spray-armed than Mike Cordova tonight.
I thought the Niners were going to run tonight. Green Bay has a terrible run defense. SF ran 24 times for 111 yards, 4.6 ypc. McCaffrey was 17 carries for 98 yards, 5.8 ypc, 2 TDs, with a 39 yard run. Mason could have run tonight.
SF defense was okay tonight. They held Green Bay to two touchdowns and two field goals in five red zone trips. Ambry Thomas was terrible, two PI calls, and SF had six penalties for 83 yards against GB's one penalty for five yards. Greenlaw had two interceptions. Special teams were marginal. Moody had a 52 yard field goal on a wet, rainy night, but then had a short field goal blocked. Wishnowsky did well punting, high average.
Brock was 23/39, 252 yards, 1 TD, no INT, 86.7 rating. Jordan Love was 72.4 passer rating. It was so wet out tonight that Purdy actually took his passing hand off the ball in the middle of a play to wipe his passing hand on his pants.
This game was a prime example of why I don't like "4th quarter comebacks" as "proof" of a quarterback's skill. Purdy was terrible all night. They were behind 21-14 going into the fourth quarter and scored 10 points, but they were behind because Purdy was playing poorly. And McCaffrey ran for two TDs. And while I'm ranting, Montana gets credit for "The Catch", but he'd thrown three interceptions prior to "the Catch." If Montana'd known how to "throw" they wouldn't need to have "The Catch."
