if only Betts were 6'4"! Does appear to be a UCLA lineup designed to ease out at least one big. But who knows what the future holds?

While Rueck and Graves are excellent coaches, I think that this year they may be slightly weaker than in years past. The Ducks have lost Endiya Rogers and Te-hina Pao-Pao to the transfer portal. In Corvalis key contributors, Bendu Yeaney and Jelena Mitrovic, have moved on to graduation - but they do still have a formidable trio in Reagan Beers, Talia Van Oelhoffen, and Timea Gardiner. I wouldn't be surprised if the Beavers surpassed the Ducks this season despite Chance Gray's and Grace Van Slooten's best efforts in Eugene.
In looking at the Pac-12 schedule, it looks like we have an inside track to the title as we have the fortune of only playing UCLA/USC and Colorado/Utah once each. I'd think that that gauntlet of teams will all be inside the Top 5/6 this year - so hopefully we'll find a way to come through unscathed against them.

In my opinion, what they really lack is a true PG in the recent tradition
of Mikayla PIVEC, Destiny SLOCUM and Aliyah GOODMAN,
The graduated Bendu YEANEY was their starting PG last year,
and she was pretty decent at best.

As for Oregon, I think they can compete for PAC 12 Top 5, but will really
depend on how the newcomers (transfers and incoming freshmen)
are able to mesh with the remaining mainstays.

6’3” Sontag as a guard surprises many Bruin WBB fans as well. UCLA WBB website lists her as a forward so in your position breakdown I’d include her with the SF’s. She has a long wingspan and defensive quickness that, along with her height, led her to get many steals and blocks last season.
Other changes:
1. Make Osborne an SG, her preferred and natural position. She will start at the two along side PG Rice.
2. Could move Londynn Jones to PG as I expect her to sub for Rice. Osborne can play PG if she’s on the floor when Kiki goes to the bench in which case Jones will play SG. It’s all pretty interchangeable anyway as Coach Close subbed pretty freely last season. Other than Anstey who was injured most of last season Iwuala averaged the fewest minutes per game at 12.1 mpg, more than Betts played for the Cardinal.
3. Correct spelling is ANSTEY not ANSTLEY.

Van Oelhoffen, who was a #2 last season, is switching back and forth (2 to 1 to 2) in practice. Susana Yepes (from Columbia) and Dominika Paurova (from the Czech Republic) don't look bad either.

While none of us has seen a day of practice and with so many mysteries, especially with the freshmen, it's still fun to ponder possible starting lineups. Each possible lineup has its strengths and weaknesses.
If Ogden is as good as advertised, could we see: Lepolo (PG), Ogden (W), Jump (SG/W), Brink (PF), Iriafen (P)? Ogden obviously has athleticism and can shoot- perhaps better than Haley (from distance). The rest of her game?
If Elena has improved her ball-handling, shot selection and confidence, could we see her as our (SG) along with Jump, Lepolo, Brink & Iriafen. Elena would give us size and toughness and her length bodes well, defensively.
Harriel seems athletic, but prefers to pass the ball and has not shown much inclination to dribble drive and/or shoot. If she has improved significantly, including her confidence, would Tara start her as (SG)? That could certainly give us a safety valve on the perimeter and a threat to score.
If Tara wants to go big, could we see: Lepolo (PG), Jump (SG/W), Demetre (SF), Brink (PF) and Iriafen (P)? One drawback, we would have no one (except Agara) to replace Brink if she gets in foul trouble or needs a break. That's asking a lot for a 6'2 freshman.
What do you think? Are there other starting lineup possibilities?

To start the year, I’m going with Lepolo, Jump, Bosgana, Iriafen, Brink.
I believe the lineup “could” change as Ogden or Demetere could be starters too. Not many freshman begin the year as starters.
UCLA is going to have the same problems we had last year. Too many bigs and too much talent at the same positions. Someone’s going to be mad about a lack of playing time. Close is a worse coach than Tara so I have my doubts she figures it all out. They will be good but I’m not pencilling them into the Final 4 just yet.

It would really surprise if Betts doesn't start for UCLA and plays 20+ minutes per game. You may not have followed the 2023 FIBA Women's Americup. Betts had an outstanding tournament and was the best player for the Silver Medal USA Team competing against far more experienced opponents, particularly Gold Medalist Brazil (Team USA lost to Brazil twice). Over seven games Betts averaged 11.4 points and 10.9 rebounds in 20 minutes per game. Betts had a 20.1 efficiency rating compared to NCAA Tournament MOP Angel Reese's 11.9 and Rickea Jackson's 10.6. Betts shot FGs at 72.7% and FTs at 59.3%. Angel Reese averaged 8.3 pts and 11.1 rebs, 36.2% FGs and 48.5% FTs.
Betts went toe-to-toe with Americup MVP 6'7" Camilla Cardoso (Team Brazil/South Carolina) and held her own. Betts certainly demonstrated her potential at the Americup. As a freshman Betts had the misfortune of playing behind superstar Cameron Brink. Still Betts got increased playing time as last season progressed and she produced. Not sure why her minutes diminished at the Pac-12 and NCAA tournaments.
Unfortunately the Cardinal and Bruins play only once at Stanford in regular season conference play. Brink versus Betts should prove a captivating matchup.

It was partly defensive matchups. For teams like Utah and UCLA which played 5 out with 3 point shooting bigs, Betts struggled to defend the 3-point line and then get back to block shots when guards would drive into the now vacated paint. Maybe she’s improved her defensive quickness or maybe Team USA athletes are much better individual defenders and don’t need as much paint protection.

Depressing our rankings are our ignominious defeat in the tournament last spring, the graduation of Jones, and the shocking transfers out. You can hardly blame people for being skeptical of us.
Helping us is Brink's return, a solid entering freshman class, and everyone's faith in Tara. Without those three factors we might not be ranked at all.
The three teams in our league that are ranked more highly than us, we play only once each, and two of them we play on the road in the most difficult of road trips. This is going to be a challenging season.

I think we are being underestimated. Brink and Jump alone make us a top 10 team. And even though Jones was an amazing player, her struggles from the 3-point line made us much easier to defend. I think our non-Jump 3-point shooting will go a long way in determining our success this year. If Demetre, Bosgana, and Lepolo become confident three point shooters who are hitting at a good clip and hunting for their shot we could surprise a lot of people and make it to the Final Four.
