Exclusive: White House told federal health agency to classify coronavirus deliberations - sources
I'd say four Trump Administration officials makes this a somewhat credible story, and importantly, neither HHS nor NSC would address this, let alone deny it. It also helps to explain the absence of CDC officials participating in the early days. Just as with China, the desire to control and tamp down information only backfires in the end.

Time to talk about what to do if you do get sick with coronavirus:

Key point, don't go to the emergency room unless you are in distress.

And your point is what exactly?
In time of crisis, controlling the information flow seems to be prudent to prevent misinformation from causing panic. I found it intriguing that many news reports cited divisiveness in the White House on how best to proceed. I hope there was. Diversity of thought and opinion is every bit as important as diversity of race, creed, or color. It helps form the best course of action. And with the constant flow of "private" conversations and information flowing from the White House to the MSM a serious concern, what's the harm in classifying the info for the time being?
Oddly, I'm reminded of a quote from a movie I first watched at the ASSU Sunday night flicks, Absence of Malice. From Wilford Brimley:
"You call what's goin' on around here a leak? Boy, the last time there was a leak like this, Noah built hisself a boat. . . .We can't have people go around leaking stuff for their own reasons. It ain't legal. And worse than that, by God it ain't right.

This seems like as good a post as any describing the epidemiology of Covid-19 and its implications:
https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca
Some bottom lines:
Quote:With that number, you can calculate the number of true cases. If the Bay Area has 86 cases today, it is likely that the true number is ~600.
Good point about the CFR here (as it has been a bit of a contentious issue in this thread:
Quote:The two ways you can calculate the fatality rate is Deaths/Total Cases and Death/Closed Cases. The first one is likely to be an underestimate, because lots of open cases can still end up in death. The second is an overestimate, because it’s likely that deaths are closed quicker than recoveries.
What I did was look at how both evolve over time. Both of these numbers will converge to the same result once all cases are closed, so if you project past trends to the future, you can make a guess on what the final fatality rate will be.
This is what you see in the data. China’s fatality rate is now between 3.6% and 6.1%. If you project that in the future, it looks like it converges towards ~3.8%-4%. This is double the current estimate, and 30 times worse than the flu.
Note, this does not include cases that went undiagnosed.
Some sobering predictions:
And lastly, on social distancing:

I hope nobody thought I was nuts about March Madness not happening. My greatest question the last two days was which athlete/ celeb was going to get confirmed with Covid-19 first.
Well, just after 5pm ET:
- Juventus Soccer player
- NBA player
- Tom Hanks
- Nebraska hoops coach?
After what happened tonight, you can see how even playing games without fans is risky because players and coaches can be disease transmitters to each other.
The Utah Jazz are now under quarantine for 14 days. They played Toronto, Detroit, and Boston since Friday. And tonight’s Pels- Kings game was called off because an official who did the Utah-Toronto game on Monday was on the ref crew.
The NCAA will have no choice but to cancel March Madness after what happened so fast tonight.

I'm likely at most risk, considering how many patients I see everyday with fever and cough. Only 6 today, which is quite low compared to my usual day. On Friday I saw about 20 with that description. If I'm not the first, someone is really unlucky.
I don't see any logic at all to this European travel ban. We should have done it 4 weeks ago. Now, it's just spitting into the wind. We have so many community cases out there that I'm not sure it accomplishes anything. Maybe we'll stop a few individuals from coming into the country with it. I know we have thousands (likely tens of thousands) of cases inside the country already, so epidemiologically it won't have an effect. This sounds like something a bunch of White House staffers cobbled together without input from the CDC.

There are many "A hero is" quotes. I'll add one more; "A hero is a kid doc."

I agree with the wish that we had locked things down more, sooner, tighter. But, WHO has recommended against travel bans. I do recognize they have thought this through more than me.
Feb 29:
WHO recommendations: "WHO continues to advise against the application of travel or trade restrictions to countries experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks."
(I didn't see if there was any change when it was declared a pandemic.)
The Lancet offers
free access to a number of Coronavirus papers.
A paper published Mar 11 is "Clinical course and risk factors for mortality of adult inpatients" of 191 patients who died or were discharged by 31-Jan. One interesting statement:"The shortest observed duration of viral shedding among survivors was 8 days, whereas the longest was 37 days."
(Santa Clara County's first case was
released after 21 days from date of detection. I'm not questioning that, but I'd like to know the relation of that genome to the first 21 community-spread cases in the county.)
BMJ also offers
free access to Coronavirus material.
JAMA offers
free access to at least some Coronavirus material.

California has now recommended no gathering over 250 people.
I had a three-person meeting scheduled with my business partners in Worcester, MA today. One from NH was going to pick up another from MA and meet me there. Late last night the one from NH sent me a text saying he has a cough and slight fever.
We obviously don’t know if he has Coronavirus, but think about this. What if he felt fine until this evening? We would absolutely be sitting together for about two hours, and even if we didn’t shake hands or give each other hugs, that easily would have been enough time to transmit to me. I would then have gone home and infected my SO. She would be going to her spin classes this weekend, and me to the gym, touching all the bars and dumbbells. Then she would go to work at an 800k SF office building on Monday.
So all I can say is...

Here's a Lancet article from yesterday. Seems to recommend getting off ACE and onto different meds. Thoughts from the experts?

We quit our gym two weeks ago. Hygiene-wise, most gyms I've been to were appalling before this started. I can't even fathom going now
We'll be running outside and doing weights at home until this pases. There are loads of great resources online for exercises you can do at home without a weight set. A theraband or the like is useful for some exercises.
