But wow, the defense was both awful (wide open receivers, slow to stop the run/seal the edge) and incredible (Stop on 4th and 1 (and 3rd and 1), two critical interceptions).  Brock will have better days but he did put together his best drive when it mattered most.  On to the NFC championship.

It felt like at least three of the times the receivers were wide open were because the DB had slipped.  I know that can happen when it's rainy, but it somehow seems worse when it's your own field that's slipping you up (especially since the opponent didn't seem to have that problem).

No turnovers by Purdy.  It basically holds if he throws INTs they lose and if he doesn't they win.  Granted it was a dumb luck there weren't a few INTs this game.  And the win was barely and not pretty.  But still, it was a one possession game, and being the team gaining the turnovers rather than losing them was the key stat.

Who can possibly forget it?  My Dad was an original Niner season ticket holder and one of their biggest fans.  It was his birthday and he was absolutely devastated when he got home. I’ll never forget how disappointed he was.  The Montana era was great but even after Super Bowl wins he still talked about the ‘57 game.

I’m old enough to remember the ‘57 game. Bring on the Lions! Time for revenge, for once and for all!

Vegasinsider has Niners by 7 over Lions.

I know he wasn't on any team, so it's not like trade limitation would stop him, but I guess I always assumed there was some basic roster freeze for the postseason.

Assuming a team has an open slot on the practice squad, they can sign a free agent at any time (just as Detroit did with Ertz).  If he does well at practice this week, they can elevate him to the 53 man roster in time for the game.  Of course, this would mean removing someone else from the 53 man roster.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Leftcoast - 01-23-2024

It's another league I know, but the Warriors also did something similar in 2019 when they signed Andrew Bogut in mid-March at the conclusion of his Australian league season in time for the 2019 playoffs.

This was their injury plagued play-off run that ended with a loss to the Kawai Leonard led Toronto in the finals.  (Thompson-torn ACL, Durant-Ruptured Achilles Tendon, Looney-Fractured collar bone, etc)

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 01-25-2024

Bill Belichick has 6 Super Bowl, 31 playoff wins, 302 regular season wins...and zero job offers.

Seven teams needed new head coaches, and three (including Harbaugh to the Chargers) have found theirs. Atlanta, Carolina, Seattle and Washington have yet to find theirs.

Belichick has only had one interview and no offers.

Why?

Simple. He is too old. The only places that would want him are the ones that believe they have all the ingredients except a proper coach and can win it all next year for sure if they get one. Nobody is in that situation. Even if they were, Belichick would have to buy into that scenario. He is too smart for that.

and he probably wants a similar situation to what he had in New England where he pretty much ran the show, not many owners appear willing to give that amount of power to one person

I wonder how much power Harbaugh will have with the Chargers...and how much power he'll want.

Just for grins, I calculated George Halas' winning percentage during each of his six decades in coaching, which weren't consecutive. He didn't coach from 1930 to 1932, or during the last three years of WWII, or 1956 and 1957.

Interesting results. He started coaching at age 25 and left coaching at age 72. Here's the winning percentage by his age range (with the number of NFL championships in brackets). I omitted ties entirely and calculated solely on Ws and Ls:

20s 84.3% (1)
30s 71.9% (1)
40s 75.3% (2)
50s 63.8% (1)
60s 61.4% (1)
70s 53.8% (0)

Halas really started to decline (relative to the other coaches) at about age 56. He only had one losing season in the 25 years prior to that age, from 56 on he had nine winning seasons and five losing seasons.

I'd guess he'll have a lot since he was hired before the new GM so likely will have some influence on who gets hired for that role.

It seems probable Harbaugh wanted lots more control over personnel as a result of his experience with the 49ers. However, the fact JH got hired before the GM may indicate ownership isn't worried about that organizational relationship. Spanos is not considered a "good" owner as I understand it. JH may have his problems sooner rather than later on that front.

While this factor is indeed a critical one, during the Patriots' winning of six rings over two decades there was a raging debate over who was due more credit for the success -- Belicheck or Tom Brady.  When Brady left New England for the Buccaneers and won a seventh ring, at an age east of 40 no less, a number of armchair pundits claimed that the argument was resolved in favor of Brady, who now had a championship without Belicheck while the reverse has not occurred.  This is probably not the main reason Belicheck is relatively unattractive to NFL franchises currently, but it rates to be an influence on their thought processes.

I agree that the question regarding who should get the credit (Belicheck or Tom Brady) has at the very least become unclear after Brady has success elsewhere. IMO the main issue is that Belicheck probably is too old to "rebuild" a franchise. Belicheck would undoubtedly require complete control (as he had at NE) to attempt such a task (if he would even consider doing it). Most franchises are unwilling to give up that much control, and certainly not to someone who may leave (because of age) before bringing them to the "promised land". The additional doubt about Belicheck's ability to do this is an additional factor.

IMO Belicheck wants to break Shula's record in a short-term (2 years or so) burst of activity and then retire. To do that, he needs a "good" team from day one. Belicheck may be willing to work with a GM under those conditions because Belicheck does not intend to stay around long enough for long-term personnel issues to matter. Unfortunately for Belicheck, there is nobody in the market for such a cameo appearance. Dallas might do, but they have decided to keep their coach. Seattle just got rid of a "mature" coach and probably aren't good enough to win 17+ games and a super bowl in the next two years. However, if there is any opportunity out there, Seattle is it. IMO not happening.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 01-26-2024

Commanders have the only available NFL HC position open. They're a mess. They got rid of an overmatched Ron Rivera. They'll probably hire the Detroit OC. Time for BB to retire.

An interesting perspective on the “is Brock Purdy a system quarterback or the next Joe Montana?” argument.

Prediction on Sunday's game?

The gloom after the Packers close call and the 49ers struggles in the rain is pervasive in the Bay Area .... TOO pervasive.

This is the sort of team SF should run through - Vulnerable at Corner, great at stopping conventional running offenses but not at covering the RB as a receiver.  On offense Detroit depends on big running backs who will get met by SFs equally big and physical linebackers.  Plus, rain is unlikely and the conditions at Levi's should be perfect for football. Word Friday is Deebo Samuel practiced both Thursday and Friday and will play on Sunday.

Both teams will score but the 49ers will score more and it won't be that close in the 4th quarter.

49ers 36, Detroit 24
