RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - Mudhead - 06-06-2025

That is certainly the most likely outcome. Still, I will be watching to see if this remarkable athlete and person can do the near impossible and win a national championship.  I love the way she owned up to her error in game one. I love the way she apologized to her team and then put her head down, plowed ahead and won game two. Her team obviously responds to her as they stepped up and got her five runs… just enough to win. And her final strikeout punctuated by the “Naijeri Stomp” was classic.

We are having the opportunity to watch an amazing athlete and person surrounded by a gritty bunch of young women go for it. They took out the “Oklahoma   Monster” (we couldn’t) and now face the evil empire in a one game finish. I wish I could be cheering for a Stanford team but that wont keep me from cheering for Canady and her compadres .

Why it’s even better than going to the Buddy Holley museum or the San Francisco symphony .  But then I’m a sports fan.  Go get ‘em Naijeri and hats off the Texas Tech for putting this team together.

Nice remarks, Mud.
I changed my anti-NaJ tune

Canady just officially resigned with Texas Tech for next year

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - M T - 06-06-2025

I first read that as
   resign-ed
not
   re-signed

Interesting they aren't saying the exact amount.  Surely it is more than the $1M she got this year.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - BostonCard - 06-06-2025

I just love how we are talking about this like a professional contract, which, to be fair it is.  But that's still a long way from the idea that she is planning to get her degree from TTU (which, I hope she does).

BC

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - martyup - 06-06-2025

Canady is getting bombed in the first inning.  5 hits, 5 runs. Will they pull her?

They pulled Candady after just one inning pitched. Ouch.

Good thing she made her new million dollar NIL deal to come back for another season with TT.

Well, if her contract is like a professional contract, her performance can critiqued similarly. And the performance in this WCWS Finals has been *awful* for how much she is getting paid and how talented she is.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - martyup - 06-06-2025

TT gives up a grand slam in the 4th and now it's 10-0.

I would add that that critique must take into account how many innings she has pitched this year. It may be she had absolutely nothing left in the tank. At this level of competition even a small loss of velocity and/or control due to exhaustion can make all the difference. That is arguably the coach's fault, not hers.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - paloalto - 06-06-2025

Also this is the third straight game the Texas hitters have seen her pitch.

Yes, but the counter argument to it is if Canady took 6 figures money instead of 7 figures, imagine how good of a #2/rest of the rotation TTU could have? And then she wouldn't have to throw 240 innings in a season and carry an otherwise limited team.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - Vandelay - 06-06-2025

Unfortunately, she is going to regret that game 1 mistake for a long time.

Quite possibly true. However the decision regarding how TT spends its money doesn't rest with Canady. It rests with the staff that doles out the offers. Roster management isn't the player's problem. We also don't know what the roster compensation limits were. There could have been more money available for the "right player" to compliment Canady.

Independent of all that, TT didn't need to win as many games as it did during the season. Once the coach knew what he had (and didn't have) he should have put more effort into keeping Canady "fresh". That would also give the other pitchers the opportunity to develop as much as possible. 54 wins looks nice, but 48 (or even fewer) might have led to a better result in the end.

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - paloalto - 06-06-2025

TT never made it to a super regional prior to this season.   This was a pretty good year for them.

from the TT softball stats page

Canady

- pitched 56% (239) of total innings

so her post-season workload (almost every inning until the last game) appears to be a lot higher than in the regular season

https://texastech.com/sports/softball/stats/2025

UT's #1 pitcher (Teagan Kavan) in the regular season

- pitched 48% (199.1) of total innings

but she did not have to carry the team in all the post season games

https://texaslonghorns.com/documents/2025/6/5/Texas_Season_65.pdf

while Canaday's regular season workload was 20% higher than Kavan, Canady's post season workload was a lot more which was probably a bigger factor in terms of fatigue

RE: Stanford Softball 2025 - fullmetal - 06-06-2025

I watched innnings five through seven tonight.  I think it's clear that one player, even a transcendental one, cannot carry a team through the current NCAA championship format.  Congrats to Texas for their first-ever softball national championship.

Well, if she had executed the intentional walk in game 1 then she may well have accomplished exactly that which you suggest cannot be done.
