We'll be running outside and doing weights at home until this pases. There are loads of great resources online for exercises you can do at home without a weight set. A theraband or the like is useful for some exercises.
Agree. Bodyweight exercises are plenty good enough for kids and old farts.
A pathetic excuse for a human being. . . .someone sends fake cancellation alert mimicking school districts letterhead, etc.

I am partial to the youtube videos on fitnessblender:
https://www.fitnessblender.com/videos
The videos are free, though you can also subscribe to programs and diet advice. You can filter the videos by equipment required so if all you have is your floor, you can exclude those that require equipment.
Also, the seven minute workout has been a standout for eons.
https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/09/the-scientific-7-minute-workout/
Johnson & Johnson has a free app to do the 7 minute workout and related workouts inspired by it (called J&J Official 7 Minute workout). But there are tons of apps and youtube videos that will let you work out at home.
And of course, good, old fashioned outdoor walks/runs/bike rides work great.

I just figured out my gmail has been hacked. Other senders are using my account to hawk Coronavirus-related “cures.” Beware of what will assuredly be a bullish scam market that is designed to spread malware. More viruses!

FYI, properly chlorinated water is
reportedly sufficient to disable the virus. It wouldn't spread in a pool, but most people use a dressing room immediately after the pool, where it could spread.

(I'm not sure if "MD" is meant to indicate you are a physician, or are quoting someone/something whose initials are MD)
I would expect that if using ACEI or ARB was a factor, then it should be readily apparent in Chinese COVID-19 records, but I haven't seen that data published. Elsewhere, reports indicate (IIRC) 21.5% of hypertension prescriptions in China are for ACEI or ARB. There should be good quantities of patients using & not using those drugs. I would hope that this is looked at ASAP and reported publicly immediately.

Hi y'all, as we shift from speculation to action, wanted to share a useful article about how to care for elderly relatives without putting them at risk in these scary times. I've had PM conversations with a few of you about this, so thought I'd share this helpful primer:
[tweet]https://twitter.com/HelenBranswell/status/1238139335305764868?s=20[/tweet]
Key takeaways:
-Even if you can't visit, call frequently, including videochat where possible.
-Encourage them to stay active inside, even that's walking around the house, neighborhood, or doing lite household chores.
-Time to haul out old movies and revisit feel good classics and favorites. For this millennial, it feels like right about now might be a good time to rewatch all of Friends, Gilmore Girls, and 30 Rock.

The NHL suspended its season. The newsflash on my phone had an interesting turn of phrase
"NHL suspends play because of spread of the coronavirus but hopes to resume in the future".
I assume that was meant to say "this season". I don't think the permanent end to NHL is being contemplated.
And Stanford has suspended all its collegiate sports:
https://gostanford.com/news/2020/3/3/stanford-athletics-coronavirus-update.aspx
Next thing that ought to be suspended is recruiting trips.
I guess we should not feel bad about the coronavirus threads being all-encompassing on a Stanford sports board, since in the real world Covid-19 considerations have subsumed athletic ones.

Clarification: Drinking properly chlorinated water won't disable the virus, simply that the virus won't survive in a pool. So many crazy remedies out there, didn't want to add to them.

My sister and I talked this morning and decided the following for our parents in 80s who are in good health for their age:
- She cancelled going to visit them for my mom and niece's birthday tomorrow.
- We urged them to have groceries delivered.
- Don't leave the house for any reason.
Just as an aside. I want everyone to take a moment to realize the fact I first started this thread two weeks ago, on Feb. 27, and appreciate just how fast things have evolved since.
It's almost a metaphor for exponential spread. It slowly built (just last week ComicCon was still on in Seattle and SXSW was still going ahead) before most people took it seriously and then it only took the last 24 hours to have multiple states declare no events over 250 people, and all organized sports in the country to be postponed.
Still a ways to go and a lot of pain to endure. Hopefully this thread prepared everyone for what has come to pass and what may lie ahead. Thank you everyone for contributing to inform and care for our lives, our loved ones, and fellow citizens.

Just as I write that, Disney announces it is closing for a month (*it will be longer*).

With the abundance of caution, I switched today to a calcium channel blocker from an ACE inhibitor. Who knows, but hopefully it can't hurt. Thanks for the advice here!

FYI .... Testing is still limited in Santa Clara, one of the most impacted counties in the US. I received this from my Kaiser doctor today in response to my e-mail asking about testing after three people from my small office stayed home with flu symptoms (including me).
Quote:"Unless there are known contacts, the Health Department is not allowing testing. It does sound like the flu so i would suggest staying home and rest. If you develop significant shortness of breath with a high fever or chest pain, please let me know."
So despite what has been stated at high levels (like that turn of phrase?) testing is limited even in virus hot spots like Santa Clara county.
So ... questions we ask with little data - Should my daughter go to her high school given she has been expose to a flu but probably not Covid-19? (Our decision is she will until/unless she develops symptoms). Should my wife continue to teach her classroom where she sees many kids throughout the day? (Ditto). And so on for our other household members. I will self quarantine and realize this is most likely a common flu but without testing who knows?
We'll be fine but I share this to show that we should treat all the infection data you get from Santa Clara with extreme doubt. There is limited testing and the infection data shared publicly must be extremely undercounted.

As I said, would it be the worst thing in the world if the cruise industry went bankrupt, aside for the disruption to local communities and employees, I don't know that an industry that hides behind "international waters" and "foreign flags" should be rescued after the blatant disregard for their passengers that was on display here.

Norway joins Italy in shutting everything down:
https://theweek.com/speedreads/901770/entire-country-norway-shutting-down
Quote:In addition to kindergartens, child care facilities, schools, and universities closing nationwide, and a ban on both professional and amateur sports — measures that have been taken only regionally so far in the U.S. — the entire country of Norway is also requiring all hairdressers, massage clinics, gyms, and tattoo parlors to close, Life in Norway and Swedish journalist Peter Imanuelsen report based off the announcement on NRK. Cultural events are also banned, with museums, pools, and libraries additionally closing. While grocery stores will remain open, restaurants, bars, pubs, and nightclubs are required to close if they can't guarantee a three-foot distance between patrons. Buffets, naturally, are banned.
Other countries are doing the same. This has to happen here, too, unless we're okay with millions dying.

To complicate matters in the Bay Area, the trees are in full bloom and leaves are sprouting, as a result, allergy forecasts are medium high. Just great.
Feel better!
