The first Swoon was in 1960 when the heavily pennant favored Giants tanked and Bill Rigney was fired on June 17. I was in HS and Bobbb was learning how to rope and tie on the freshman rodeo team at Cal Poly. We both remember the references to the Swoon no matter what the Times says.

I remember “June Swoon” being used to describe Giants losses in the month as early as 1960 as well.   The Times article utilized the phrase but did not coin the expression (relative to Giants baseball).  IMO, it is nothing more than a facile method of describing a loss during a specific month.

Heck, if there was a clever way to link July to a word that denotes losing, I am sure we would have read it by now regardless of its accuracy in detailing the outcome of the games.

The Giants have inspired me to take down the fifty or do baseball books off my bookshelf. I’m currently rereading a book about the ‘62 pennant race by Dave Plaut, a retired producer at NFL Films.

Next up is “Teammates” by David Helberstam. Short masterpiece about a trip by Dom D and Johnny Pesky to visit a dying Ted Williams.

The term has an interesting history.  The Cubs and Indians also popularized it, but it seems to have started on Wall Street.

Meanwhile, in AZ, another Giants' loss.  Cueto very mediocre.  Team still can't hit.

In post-game, I heard Papa say that the Giants "by far" rely on the long ball more than any other team to score runs.  This comports with my gut feel that the team SUCKS at advancing runners and scoring without a hit (let alone without a bomb).  Happened again tonight.  (1st and 2nd, no outs . . . no runs scored).

Danger, Will Robinson!!

And so it starts... the first few are preparing the lifeboats.

F*** the lifeboats. Go Giants! And trade some of the peach fuzz on the farm for a bat!

Good strategy for the Warriors.  Thompson (31), Curry (33) and Green (31) are on the negative side of 30.  If they're going to maximize the capabilities of those three and shoot for an NBA championship, they need to do it now and seek players to trade now with their picks.  They have a #7 and #14 pick this year, they have their first and second round picks in 2022 along with Toronto's second round pick and their 2023 first round pick.  They don't have a 1st or 2nd round selection in 2024.

Slater.  I think he may be sent down with Vosler being called up.  Kapler has shown that he has no confidence in him. The Monday night Dodgers game was a brobdingnagian tip-off. He had two chances to use Slater. First was in 7th. Left hander on mound. Trienen warming up. Two on. One out.  Down a run. Now had he gone to Slater, Roberts would have countered withTrienen.  But at least that means Crawford will face a right hander. And it also may mean Roberts has to go deeper in his pen.  Or bring Jansen in earlier.

Then the 8th. Second and third one out down a run.  Casali pinch hits.  Not only is he a.170 hitter (yeah I get he’d been somewhat hot) but it’s rare for a manager to use his non starting catcher as a PH until he absolutely has to.

Next night, again a big situation late. Leading off inning (8th I think).  Again he goes to Casali. Despite the fact that his PH the night before was one of the worst AB’s anyone has had all season, save Dubon.  He took a center cut fastball.  Checked swing for strike two, then swung at a slider about a foot out of the zone to strike out.

Last night he used Davis and Ruf.

Slater has looked bad.  He also has had very few ab’s the last two weeks.  He has an option left.  Sending him down to get 40 to 50 PAs makes sense at this point.

Vosler is eligible to come back today or tomorrow, I think. Giants face Galen tonight , right hander. TBD tomorrow, prob bullpen game. Lefty on Sun.

The only thing that may save him, is a shortage of RH bats. But Giants can go with Estrada at third, Flores at first, Ruf in left, Yaz in center and Davis in right against lefties. (Admittedly that sounds frightening defensively)

If Slater does get a couple starts here pre-break, he has to produce. He is, I think on very thin ice.

Yeah, they need to figure out how to score without HRs.  Still it’s 4 games. They are going to have a dry spell.  I don’t pay much attention to Dodgers and Pads. Both will pass and finish higher than the Giants. I concentrate on the other divisions. Particularly, what team is in second. Cause in the end, the Giants somewhat realistic shot is the second WC. Right now those two teams are the Nats (Giants lead by 9 1/2) and Cubs (8 1/2).

So you can get a front line starter on a rental. Price is Bart, Slater and a low level prospect. Assuming Giants don’t go into the tank between now and July 31 ( they have something like 22 games till then) Do you do it?

Other than Bart (only because I think Bailey is a better prospect), I would not trade any of the “big potential” farm hands. I have written before that Slater needs a fresh start elsewhere.  He can play but I think he needs to get away from SF.  Therefore, Bart, Slater and low level minor leaguer for a big name rental is a go.

Why anyone would want Slater is beyond me. Lot's of swings and misses. Lot's of taken third strikes.

Can play all three of positions. Can run. And he’s shown in the past that he can hit left handed pitching.  Obviously you aren’t going to get anything for him alone.  But he could be attractive to a team as part of a package.

Baseball is like any other sport: you need confidence to play well.  Playing time breeds confidence; lack of PT does the opposite.  It's no wonder that Slater is sucking now - he gets no regular PT and doesn't have the confidence of his manager.  I think he is a better player than Ruf, Tauchman, Casali, Dubon, Vosler, and maybe even Wade.

I'd play Slater every game from here to the All Star break - against righties and lefties.  And then if he still is sucking canal water, option him.  But give him some leash/comfort/confidence.

No one on the Giants is hitting well, with possible exception of Posey  . . . and Duggar (of all people) . . . and  . . . Flores (maybe?).

It's scuffle-city right now, particularly with RISP.

But Kapler won’t. He’s committed to the platoons.
