Crazy that there was a nearly 20 year gap between complete game shutouts in the NCAA tournament.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Papa John - 06-14-2021

According to the NCAA website, Bracket 1 has #9 Stanford, #5 Arizona, #4 Vanderbilt and NC State. So will they re-seed the teams? If so, then our first game will be a rematch with Arizona. If bracket form holds regardless of opponent, we would face Vandy. At least I think that's right.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BostonCard - 06-14-2021

From what was in this thread, our opponent is going to be NC State, but I don't know how that was determined.

There just aren't many complete games these days, let alone complete game shutouts, let alone complete game shutouts in the post-season. There have been only 6 complete games by Stanford pitchers in the last 6 seasons:

2016  0
2017  2
2018  0
2019  1
2020  0
2021  3

1. Arkansas (46-10) 2. Texas (42-15) 3. Tennessee (45-16) 4. Vanderbilt (40-15) 5. Arizona (40-15) 6. TCU (40-17) 7. Mississippi St. (40-15) 8. Texas Tech (36-15) 9. Stanford (33-14) 10. Notre Dame (30-11)

It's done by seeds prior to the start of the tournament.

NC State beat Arkansas. When we win, we play the winner of the Arizona/Vanderbilt game.  Texas and Tennessee are in the other bracket.

When the details like start time and tv listing are known, it would be nice if one of the baseball experts started a separate thread for that series.

We can bump this one, since it's conveniently labeled NCAA Championship:  Stanford Baseball (thecardboard.org)

RE: Stanford Baseball - Papa John - 06-14-2021

Thanks BC and AcesUp. I stand corrected.

I think it would be great to have the NCAA Championship: Stanford Baseball thread pinned at the top of the Important Threads for as long as Stanford is playing. At least, in my opinion, it's more important than Sports Trivia ;-)

RE: Stanford Baseball - Hulk01 - 06-14-2021

We play Arizona first.

RE: Stanford Baseball - ca245 - 06-14-2021

NCAA Printable Bracket
According to this printable bracket from the NCAA website, we play NC State first. That is, the brackets as originally seeded hold; they do not re-seed.

RE: Stanford Baseball - ColoradoTree - 06-14-2021

What a wild super regional for NC State. Lose 21-2 before rattling off a couple of one-run wins. The tv folks said no one's ever won a super regional after dropping one of the games by 19 runs, and that seems so obviously true that I'm not going to bother researching it myself.

As for how it affects Stanford, I suppose it's nice not to have to play the consensus top team in the country right out of the gate, but NC State is clearly a team that can shut down big lineups, so that's why they play the games, I suppose. Here's hoping we can start out in the winner's bracket!

For whatever it's worth, and going with the most recent Baseball America Top 25, here's how the 4 teams in our bracket did against the rest of the Top 25:

Vanderbilt (seeded 4th, ranked 2nd)

* Vs. #17 East Carolina (2-0): Won 2-0 and 4-1 (Super Regional)
* Vs. #1 Arkansas (0-1): lost 6-4 (SEC tournament)

* At #3 Tennessee (2-1): Won 5-0 and 10-4; lost 8-4
* Vs. #8 Mississippi State (2-1): Won 6-2 and 7-4; lost 7-4
* At #12 Florida (1-2): Won 11-7; lost 11-8 and 5-3
* At #10 Ole Miss (2-3): Won 13-2; lost 3-1 and 13-10 in regular season; at SEC tourney won 5-4 and lost 4-1
* At #22 Oklahoma State (2-1): Won 5-0 and 18-4; lost 10-6

Arizona (seeded 5th, ranked 6th)

* Vs. #10 Ole Miss (2-1): Won 9-3 and 16-3; lost 12-3 (Super Regional)

* At #7 Stanford (1-2): Won 20-2; lost 5-4 (13) and 8-2
* Vs. #13 Oregon (2-1): Won 5-4 and 15-2; lost 18-13
* At #21 UCLA (1-2): Won 7-3; lost 3-2 and 11-3

Stanford (seeded 9th, ranked 7th)

* At #9 Texas Tech (2-0): Won 15-3 and 9-0 (Super Regional)
* Vs. #15 UC Irvine (2-1): Won 12-4 and 11-8; lost 9-4 (Regional)

* Vs. #6 Arizona (2-1): Won 5-4 (13 innings) and 8-2; lost 20-2
* At #13 Oregon (2-1): Won 6-5 and 8-15 (12 innings); lost 2-1
* Vs. #15 UC Irvine (3-1): Won 4-1, 6-1, and 8-6; lost 5-1
* Vs. #21 UCLA (2-1): Won 6-2 and 11-6; lost 6-1

N.C. State (unseeded, ranked #16)

* At #1 Arkansas (2-1): Won 6-5 and 3-2; lost 21-2 (Super Regional)
* At #20 Louisiana Tech (2-0): Won 8-3 and 14-7 (Regional)

* Vs. #24 Duke (ACC Championship): lost 1-0
* Vs. #18 FSU (2-1): Won 6-4 and 6-4; lost 15-11
* At #4 Notre Dame (1-2): Won 5-2; lost 3-2 and 11-2

RE: Stanford Baseball - Ballbuster - 06-14-2021

NC State played the same 9 all year. I guess the coach does not have a lot of faith in his bench!

RE: Stanford Baseball - Spiny_Norman - 06-14-2021

Schedule is set - Stanford vs. NC State will kick off the College World Series in game 1 at 11 am pacific on Saturday.

Who likes our chances of winning it all?

I don't really - but I am a pessimist about such things.

Texas has to be a favorite at this point. Their half of the bracket looks to me like a two-team race with Tennessee, and I'd give Texas a clear advantage on pitching. They have the best ERA in the country. At 2.89 they are the only team in the country with an ERA under 3.

Vandy looks to me like the best team left. They have the 6th best team ERA in the country (2nd among CWS participants) along with the two top pitching prospects in the nation in Rocker and Leiter. They also led the SEC in both batting average and slugging. That's a tough combination.

Arizona is the best offensive team left - BA #4 (NCAA)/#1(teams in CWS) and SLG #7/#1. They put a 20-2 beating on Stanford at Sunken Diamond earlier in the year - though we won the series.

Stanford's concerns remain the same. Pitching depth first and foremost. They still have to get through a 4-team double elimination tournament followed by a best of three for the championship. It's a little easier on arms at first as the schedule is more spread out - with a day between rounds in the double elimination part. But there is also less of a break after the double elimination part before the final series (either 1 or 2 days rest depending upon how things play out). A second concern is that Stanford relies heavily on the HR, which is great but more susceptible to hot/cold spells. And I still don't like Stanford teams playing before noon pacific time.

On the other hand, the team is hot, they don't seem to care about any of these peripheral issues (heat/noon start times), they have two hot pitchers and a roaring offense, and it's baseball where the outcome is more random than most other sports. Why not Stanford?

Pitching will have to step up, but confidence rubs off, and after that CG on Saturday. Hopefully the others will follow, not with a CG but the take mound and just do it.

NC State does not have really anyone coming off the bench. Position players have been pretty much the same all season. Tresh has caught a lot of games, and this coach does not seem to go to his bench at all. Their backup catcher or catchers only have maybe 10 AB's and they have been mostly strike outs.

Arkansas had the TT syndrome, they thought they were going to roll into the CWS. Not liking Vandy in this bracket!!!!

RE: Stanford Baseball - BostonCard - 06-15-2021

The thing about baseball is that randomness has an outsized importance, especially in a short series.  I agree with CT that you wouldn't pick Stanford as the favorite, but in an eight team CWS, you might say that Stanford's chances might be a little less than 1 in 8, but it you might peg it at 1 in 10 or 1 in 12.

RE: Stanford Baseball - ColoradoTree - 06-15-2021

I wish the brackets showed the dates/times for the other games, as I want to get a sense of how much we can just ride Beck and Williams in the postseason. But on the ticket site, at least, they show the games and times, if not clarifying the potential matchup. But here's what it looks like:

Saturday, June 19
Game 1: 11am PT: Stanford (Beck) vs. N.C. State
Game 2: 4pm PT: Arizona vs. Vanderbilt

Monday, June 21
Game 5: 11am PT: Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2
Game 6: 4pm PT: Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2

Wednesday, June 23
Game 9: 4pm PT: Winner Game 5 vs. Loser Game 6

Friday, June 25
Game 11: 11am PT: Winner Game 6 vs. Winner Game 9

(The "if necessary" game in case the Winner of Game 6 loses Game 11 isn't on the schedule, but presumably that would be on the 26th, since the CWS Finals start June 28. Meanwhile, the other bracket's games are June 20, 22, 24, and 25.)

So, assuming we go with Beck on the 19th and Williams on the 21st, how much we'll need other starters obviously depends on staying in the winner's bracket. If we win the first two games, it would be Beck on the 19th, Williams on the 21st, and then Beck again on the 25th, with Williams available for the "if necessary" game. Pretty ideal. But if we lose one of the first two, we're playing on the 23rd, so that would be either Beck on 4 days' rest or a third starter, with either Beck on 6 days' rest for the game on the 25th or Williams on 4 days' rest. (I don't have a sense of how stretched out guys are and how willing we'd be to have a guy go on short rest--I don't follow the regular season all that closely. So I'll defer to you all on what we'd do in that situation.)

In the regional, we went with Williams on Friday (104 pitches in 7), Beck on Saturday (116 in 7), and then we cobbled together bullpen games on Sunday and Monday. One of those bullpen games in an elimination game seems... suboptimal.

Anyway, the schedule is clear enough: win and we can keep riding Beck and Williams. Lose and you're gonna have to figure something else out.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 06-15-2021

I would strongly guess Beck then Williams. Remember during the season they pitch with 7 days rest
