Castellanos - a nice add, yes; but not for five years. I don’t think he will age well. And, yes, count me among those who are happy to see the Giants not throwing around silly money just to acquire a “name”. I do believe they need a right-handed power bat. However, with the Rangers in the mix for Story (along with SF, Boston and the Yankees), I don’t see him coming to the Giants. Therefore, no big contracts are in the offing.

Silly money? Seeger? Semien, Marte, Castellanos, Suzuki, Schwarber, Correa. Freeman. Olson? All dumb? (I’ll give you Bryant as from what I read Rockies were way beyond what anyone else offered. Kind o& like when Giants signed Zito).
Sorry, but I don’t buy the “all long term contracts are bad” argument. Nor do I think that the Giants are just smarter than everyone else.
Whoa. Hang on a second. NO ONE ever said that “all long term contracts are bad”.
Instead, a more measured analysis is in order….
First, I would define a six+ year contract for nine figures as silly money. I would suggest that more often than not, those contracts do not age well. YES, there are definitely exceptions to the rule.
Here are the contracts signed this off-season that fall in the silly money category:
Seager - $325M for 10 years
Bryant - $182M for 7 years
Semien - $175M for 7 years
Olson - $168M for 8 years
Freemen - $162 for 6 years
Baez - $140M for 6 years
Of those, I like the Olson deal. The others? Not so much.
Note: I get the notion that LA is willing to throw money away long term in order to wave the “World Series or bust” flag this year.
Of the other guys you mentioned (Marte, Castellanos, Suzuki, Schwarber, Correa), here are my thoughts:
Marte - 4 years/$78 million. Reasonable.
Castellanos - 5 years/$100 million. Term is problematic - bad signing
Suzuki - 5 years/$99.625M (incl. payment to Hiroshima). Reasonable.
Schwarber - 4 years/$79M. Term is problematic - bad signing
Correa - 3 years/105M. Given the opt outs, a great decision by both parties.
By the way, the other three nine figure contracts were signed by Gausman, Ray and Scherzer for five, five and three years respectively. Of those, the Scherzer deal was a good move. The other two represent problematic terms.
The Dodgers are willing to spend what it takes. Freeman was a great pickup. Nothing silly about Olson Semien or Seager.

Why 2030? You sign these guys long term knowing that you are not going to get the value on the back end. But they are key to winning now. And,, btw, they also can help with revenue. More interest. More butts in seats. More merchandise sales.
Hunter Pence. Signed contract in ‘13, I believe. Horrible last couple years. Bad contract, right? They don’t win WS in ‘14 without Pence. So, worth every penny.
RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread -
DC 86 - 03-19-2022
My issue with all of this is that the standings are based on wins and losses, not ROI. The goal is to win championships, not to win every negotiation.
None of us know what deals this winter will turn out to be good ones or bad ones, but a high revenue team should be willing to enter into potentially "bad" deals in the cause of winning.
Historically only about a third of megadeals ($100 mm+) have generated surplus value. However, position player mega contracts have fared better than pitcher mega contracts, and not surprisingly the best deals in hindsight skew toward younger players. A $100 million contract for a 30 (or under) year old position player is more or less a 50/50 proposition. However if the return is deficit value, but the player is the difference in reaching the playoffs or winning a pennant, was it a bad deal?
The Giants infield is currently composed of the following:
Brandon Belt (turns 34 next month) - played well last year (2.7 bWAR) but only appeared in 97 games.
Tommy LaStella (33 years old) - 0.3 bWAR (barely above replacement), only once in nine seasons has he been above 0.6 bWAR.
Brandon Crawford (35 years old) - phenomenal 6.1 bWAR season last year, but an outlier, only 2.3 total bWAR in his previous three seasons.
Evan Longoria (36 years old) - also ok last year (1.8 bWAR) but only appeared in 81 games.
Some of the contracts handed out this winter by other teams are correctly criticized as not going to age well, but the Giants infield has already aged and continues to age, so we must similarly assume that these players will decline, perhaps decline sharply. Crawford was a phenomenal player last year and received a two year extension, but he's almost certainly not going to provide similar production this year, and even less likely next year playing shortstop at age 36.
So let's take Corey Seager or Carlos Correa or Marcus Semien, who are each being paid $25 million - $35 million per year. If Corey Seager and Marcus Semien only generate $45 million in value while being paid $57.5 million next year, but make Texas relevant again and perhaps make them a playoff team then are those "bad contracts"?
Getting back to the Giants, maybe Carlos Correa ends up only being worth $25 million next year. Isn't he still worth at least five wins as an improvement over LaStella and/or Longoria while also filling in for Crawford if needed? and in a very competitive division such as the NL West isn't five games (and I'm being conservative) possibly the difference between reaching the wild card vs being home, or winning the division vs being the wild card, or the difference in winning or losing a playoff series? Technically it's a pretty bad deal (negative $10 million of value relative to cost) but it's a great deal for SF if it's a difference maker. And that's close to a worst case scenario unless he's injured, given that he's 27 years old with a track record of elite level play.
Trevor Story might be paid in the $25 million range next year, and that is likely an overpay relative to production, but he's still going to generate much more value than LaStella, so a team that can afford it (such as SF) should be eager to overpay in order to maximize its chances of winning. Nick Castellanos is likely not going to be worth $100 million, but even if he only produces $60 million in value as a substantial upgrade to the Giants current hitters then it's also arguably a justifiable expense for a wealthy team such as SF.
There is no hard cap in baseball, so there's no opportunity cost in spending money on a player. The Giants are currently about $90 million under the de facto soft cap anyway, and at least three teams (Dodgers, Mets, Phillies) have already exceeded the CBT threshold and are willing to pay the tax, which is minuscule in the grand scheme of things. Money not spent in baseball is merely more profit for ownership.
What's clear is that Farhan Zaidi is operating under certain financial parameters and that ownership is prioritizing profits. That's fine but not something to be celebrated. We congratulate Zaidi for not making any bad deals but there are certain types of bad deals that are actually good deals for a team that is aggressively trying to win. Zaidi executed these types of "bad but good" deals when he was in LA under ownership that was willing to reduce ROI (and to eat the cost of deals that are total failures) in an effort to maximize their chances of winning the division, which they did eight years in a row.
Zaidi is doing a phenomenal job following the Dodgers model or building a strong farm system, opportunistically finding undervalued players in other organizations, being active at the trade deadline etc. But LA is willing to spend for special players (Betts, Freeman) while SF apparently is not, which means that everything has to go right for the Giants - as it indeed did last year - in order to compete at the highest level, and everything going right isn't something to count on.

I don't know if anyone has had a chance to watch one of the Giants' pre-season games. Giants have split their first two games.
Couple of tidbits:
- not-sure-what-string Catcher Brett Auerbach is a fireplug (5'9") who has two triples in three ABs. He was a 40th round selection out of Alabama four years ago.
- LaMonte Wade is 2 for 2 with a double and an HR.
- The aforementioned Heliot Ramos is 1 for 2.
- Logan Webb pitched two shutout innings, striking out five of the six batters. P. S. Fun fact about Logan Webb: He led the NL in hit batsmen in 2020 with 7.
- Mauricio Llovera also looks great. Two shutout innings, no walks or hits, struck out three. Hit a batter.
- Giants have four HRs in two games (Wade, Duggar, Denoves, Mathisen). Giants pitchers have only given up one HR.
- On the other end, Grant McCray has struck out three times in three ABs and Jaylin Davis, Wilmer Flores and, Hunter Bishop have struck out twice in 2 ABs.
- Austin Slater is 0 for 2. No walks or K's.
- 30 year old fill-in pitcher Brian Brickhouse gave up six runs on three hits and three walks in an inning
- 28 year old Corey Oswalt gave up three runs in 1 2/3 innings. Has had a cup of coffee with the Mets. Doesn't miss many bats.
- Finally, perennial hopeful Tyler Beede gave up two runs on five hits in two innings. One was an HR.
To the big contract conversation, I'm of two minds. Barry Zito had 14 years in the bigs (I don't count the cup of coffee with Oakland two years after he left SF). He pitched 7 years for each team. He never had an ERA under 4.00 for the Giants and was above 5.00 three of his seven years with the Giants. His ERA was above 4.00 only once with the A's. He won a Cy Young with the A's, was a three time All Star, and led the league in wins one year and starts four years. With the Giants, he led the NL in losses one year.
He really only had one good year with the Giants, going 15-8 in 2012, his only winning season with the G's. Never had a losing season with the A's. But 2012 was amazing. The Giants won six straight elimination games in the playoffs, and Zito pitched and won the first one.

That was actually a bad year with a misleading W-L record as is often the case. His ERA+ was 85, meaning 15% worse than league average. He only struck out 5.6/9 innings and registered 0.1 bWAR.
2009 was actually his only season with the Giants when he was above league average. Compared to 2012 he had more strikeouts per nine innings, fewer walks per nine innings, lower ERA, better WHIP, better K/BB ratio, etc. However his record was 10-13.
Saw Zito pitch against Kyle Peterson in a phenomenal Friday night game at Sunken Diamond back in the day. Pitchers duel with both dominant in different ways, one of the best games I've ever seen in person. I think Peterson set the conference record for career strikeouts that night but not sure. Electric atmosphere in any case.

A bit more on Auerbach…
He was drafted in 2018 by Colorado in the 40th Round as a JC player (Saddleback). He did not sign. He moved on to Alabama and was signed as a free agent in 2020 by SF.

As for Pence, he had a positive WAR until his last season. He was not horrible in 16, 17. He was ok.

Story to Red Sox. 140 Million for 6 years. Too rich for the Giants. Got to keep that payroll down.
There are owners that are “ all in”. Unfortunately, Johnson and Co. aren’t.
So, what I don’t want to see anymore is that the Giants are “in the mix” for anyone other than reclamation projects or short term deals for players hoping to have a big year and cash in. With some other team, of course. Because it’s abundantly clear, this ownership will not play in that market. Be nice to have owners “all in” - committed to winning, no matter the cost. But alas, we have a thrifty group. It will catch up. FA’s and their agents must know that the Giants won’t make the deal…. Unless, of course they can’t get a long term big money deal. Then they can come to the Giants for scraps.
