I agree with this and in general, am surprised more top collegiate prospects have not elected to use their extra year of eligibility. The college game and in my opinion the appreciation of it and the intensity of the tournament and Final Four is a much better experience for the athlete than the current state of the WNBA (and the very limited roster spots/playing time).
I wondered after Kiana was cut if perhaps she wished she came back for a 5th year, and many other "top" college players who if not selected in the 1st round, seem to get cut.
Yes, lord knows we would have loved to have Ki back last season. That said, remember that for most SAs set to graduate in 4 years, they typically need to get into a graduate program to exercise a fifth year. For example, on the men's side, we recently learned that two SAs who didn't take their COVID 5th year at Stanford -- Oscar da Silva, who went to play pro abroad, and Daejon Davis, who grad transferred to UW -- couldn't get into a grad program at Stanford. So I think the COVID 5th year is not necessarily a gimme on the Farm.

Absolutely correct.
Also keep in mind that admissions in MBB and Football has already compromised its academic standards, while getting into a Stanford grad program is based purely on the academic standards for that program. This may be why female athletes seem to do better than some male athletes in getting into Stanford graduate programs. A "B" average and a lot of extracurriculars won't cut it. Furthermore, you have to plan in advance to be sure your undergraduate major is preparing you for that graduate program. And the vast majority of our grad programs are more than one year in length.
Not every Stanford student, let alone every Stanford athlete, has what is needed at the time of graduation to go into one of the "big three" (90%+ of Stanford graduate degrees): law, medicine, business--not that any of them could be completed during a 5th year of eligibility. (Kate Paye is amazing--both an MBA and a JD from her alma mater, but of course she was focused on her studies at that point and not on a fifth year of basketball.) Similarly, no 5th year player is going to enroll in a 4-5 year doctoral program in order to play basketball for one year.
So that leaves the tiny number of stand-alone MA or MS degrees. Most departments that offer PhDs do not admit students for the purpose of earning a Master's any longer. So only if your undergraduate department happens to offer a stand-alone MA or MS are you set up for an easy transition. For Anna Wilson, an MFA was a logical continuance of her undergraduate major--and that program is quite competitive to get into, so kudos for her. For Mikaela Ruef it was engineering--again after fabulous success with the undergraduate major.
So what MA programs are there at Stanford that are not super-selective and that will admit students with a variety of different academic backgrounds? Very very few. You can explore the options here. Communications is probably a popular option. The MLS won't work since it is a part-time 4 year program held only at night.

Excellent point. I think co-term degrees, nationwide, will increase in popularity to reflect the level of education needed for an ever more complex society. You are right that they require advance planning--you usually need to know that you are going co-term a couple of years in advance to get the requirements right. I am not sure, for example, if a transfer student could really pull off a co-term program. Thinking back, the WBB players who got a 5th year scholarship did not know until their 4th year, if not the end of their 4th year. Too late to do a co-term program unless it had already been planned.
This issue of timing is likely the reason for the difference between Wilson and Carrington. Wilson was promised a scholarship early enough for her to arrange to apply and be accepted into her MFA program--although I don't know if it was considered a co-term program or not. In any case, when another scholarship came up very late that might have been offered to Carrington, it was no longer possible for her to apply and be accepted to an MA program--if she had wanted to (and she may not have wanted to.) Baylor, however, managed to figure out a master's program for her at a relatively late date. Anyone know, by the way, what that degree was and whether Carrington finished it? I'm hoping it was a good degree for her that she will use....
All this talk is just a way of making clear that getting a 5th year at Stanford is not solely the prerogative of a coach granting a scholarship. In fact, at Stanford it can be a pretty tall order. Some universities have a plethora of non competitive MA programs and could expect an athlete to always be able to get into one or another, e.g. your classic one year MS in Sports Management. I teach at one of those places. Stanford does not have those kinds of degrees.

By definition, a co-terminal degree requires both the undergraduate and master’s degrees to be granted by the same institution.

Oregon looking strong against N Carolina, up 23-20 at end of 1st Quarter, now 31-23 two+ min into the 2nd. Oregon's freshmen in particular looking good. The Pac 12 is going to be a challenge this year. Not just Oregon, but also UCLA and Utah, Arizona . . .

There's a nice article in The Athletic (of course paywalled) about WNBA players playing overseas in the off-season. Stanford grad Erica McCall is quoted a good deal.

The article also compliments Erica's podcast, something I wasn't aware of before. Googling a bit, I found the podcast here:

For Jana followers: unfortunately for our former player, she is on a guard-rich team (4 starters, 3 come off the bench, and 1 is out with a season-ending injury). She seems to be at the bottom of their depth chart, but she played 21 minutes today in a forty point rout. She had 3 points (1 for 3 from the arc), 2 turnovers, 3 rebounds, 0 assists, and 2 fouls.
I think she is enjoying her new team and it turned out for the best with Stanford as well.

So far I've only been able to catch part of the SCAR game, but between what I saw, what Tara has said, and our Cardboarders' reports on our other games, I feel pretty confident Lepolo has put to rest any lingering doubts we should have had about losing Van Gytenbeek's services. Wish her the best, though the Stanford to Baylor undergraduate transfer is not one I'd wish on my worst enemy...

The one thing Jana showed last year that we miss is her 3pt shooting. At least until someone steps up besides Jump.

Prechtel (6/15), Demetre (7/17), and Nivar (5/11) are all shooting over 40% and Bosgana is at 35% (6/17), and Brink is at 36% (4/11). Number of attempts are low so far for them (minimum 11 attempts) compared with Jump (40 attempts), but we do not lack for the ability to shoot the three.

It may end up being true but using stats from blowouts against lesser competition may not be representative.
How were our shots from outside in our last game? (I haven't looked so they may support your stance... but from memory, didn't seem like we had much) Admittedly, it's on the other end of the spectrum opponent wise but i think we can both agree that those are the games we're most worried about.
Perhaps another argument would be that we just need those players to pull the trigger.
Here's hoping a few of our players do indeed step up in our tough games (it'll make the games less nail-biting. =))

I wouldn’t want to make that transfer for myself, but I’m not Jana; she has to do what’s best for her. I hope she found what she was looking for and is happy there.

Paywalled. Too bad, interesting topic.
Having said that, our bench proved itself in the first 5 games. IMHO, TVD probably didn't trust it enough against SC.

For some reason, it was not paywalled for me. I agree with the general thrust of the article--that the bench was needed more.
