About shooters besides Cam/Hannah: Player on top of player are really, really skilled, but we've kind of gone back to running some of our older offenses, and the ball is moving; no sticky hands

Thanks for the summary Now I'm ready for Stanford WBB.

One other observation, Tara mentioned several times how she wants the Stanford Women's Basketball culture to be strong and positive. I don't ever remember her emphasizing culture so much. I think that is something that was maybe under scrutiny after how last season ended and with our transfers out. Reestablishing that sisterhood and positive culture as perception matters is incredibly important for recruiting. I think Coach McCall and Tempie will be instrumental in that regard. Not saying the culture was ever bad, but there was lots of specualtion last spring what is going on/wrong within the Stanford Wbb program.

This is really Cam's and Hannah's team, the final remnants of Stanford's 2021 national championship squad.

My impression is that both Brink and Jump are mature, unselfish, bright young women who could easily have left Stanford after last season and decided to stay--at least in part for the chance to remain part of a sisterhood and to enjoy another year in a special place.  And both are fiercely competitive.

I think this year our team will have excellent role models and leaders.

Full schedule is out. Only 3 National Tv games. Sigh. 
Indiana on ESPN
Duke on ABC
UCLA on ESPN2
I sure hope we get more TV exposure next year in the ACC. 

We are also preseason #15. First time we are outside the top 10 since I think 2016. Seems many are underestimating our team this year. I think we are a top 10 team, maybe top 5. We still have Cameron Brink people! Hopefully we can embrace the underdog role.

I think Stanford’s #15 reflects that we have more questions to answer than most teams out there with our suddenly very thin post rotation and a reliance on youth to deliver in order for us to be successful this year.

The complete schedule is out and it's strange that only Oregon State is coming down to play us on January 21st. but not Oregon.  We lose a potentially good opportunity to pick up 2 home wins.  On the other hand, we play up at both Oregon schools (02/29 & 03/02).

Glad the oversight was addressed.  Two reasonably good opportunities for wins.  We'll need every one we can get.

I think the schedule will be quite good for us if any of our freshmen show themselves to be stars who can start in their first year.  I say that because we have a less challenging out-of-conference schedule than usual, and because the top 3-4 teams not named Stanford in the Pac 12 only appear once each on our regular league schedule.  Even with a slow start and even if we drop some games we have a reasonable path toward a top 4 seed in the Pac 12 tourney, and I think that may become the first really good test of how our team chemistry and our new players are meshing and developing.  Can we compete with UCLA and Utah in particular?  Can we hold off Colorado or a rising Washington? 

The schedule gives plenty of time for the team to "get by" while the freshmen develop and become prepared for bigger roles than freshmen usually get.  One of them has to become good enough to play major minutes by the Pac 12 tournament.  And if they have that level of excellence to earn starting roles, they should have plenty of time to develop it and to show it.

And let's face it, with Brink and Jump both gone after this year, we sure as heck had better have one or more starting-caliber players coming out of our frosh class.  If that turns out not to be true, then WBB at Stanford is going to look quite different than it has for the last 25 years.

Ogden is, by consensus and ranking, the most likely of the three to jump into such a role.  But we have been surprised before by players like Lepolo, Lili Thompson, etc. who were not discussed much in the pre season hype and became key parts of the team early in their careers.  And so I am eager to see Agara and Clardy play against tough competition, too.

Agree on schedule except we are only playing Utah and Colorado at their gyms and we all know how challenging it is to go on the road to the Mountain Schools.

Here are my keys to the season:

Chemistry- Last season's team was overly-talented and had two All-Americans, but they lacked the chemistry to play together effectively when the games were on the line.  Does this season's team have that chemistry they had when they won the NCAA and reached the Final Four the next season?

Grit- The Hulls had grit.  I'm not sure we have a player who has that grit.  Brink has passion, intensity, and an aggressiveness that (along with her talent), makes her one of the 3-4 best college players in the country, but I think there needs to be someone other than Cam to be that 'grit' person. This is an area of concern.

Game coaching/game management- Last season was probably not one of Tara's better seasons, coaching.  She must shoulder part of the responsibility for our collapse against UCLA in the PAC-12 semi-finals and certainly for our poor prep and response to Mississippi in the NCAA 2nd. round.  Game management was also a big challenge with so many talented players sitting on the bench, competing for playing time.  Now down to 12 players, Tara won't have that problem to worry about as much.  I think Tara will be internally motivated to right the wrongs of last season and show the PAC-12 (and the country), she is still one of the best coaches in the history of women's college basketball.  This will be a big plus.  I can definitely see possible upsets over Indiana and Duke in the non-conference.

The freshmen- 81alum is right.  One of those freshmen must emerge as a legit impact player and become one of the best freshmen in the PAC-12.  That would take much of the sting in losing Haley, Betts and Nivar.  The non-conference will give our 3 frosh the opportunity to show what they have.  Having that additional impact player will pay brobdingnagian dividends as we move into Conference.

On top of a positive revelatory freshman season from OGDEN, AGARA and/or CLARDY, in order for Stanford to thrive this season, IRIAFEN, DEMETRE and BOSGANA have to have breakout seasons as primetime scorers.  BRINK and JUMP and the PG skills of LEPOLO are already a given. Also, who will be this year's capable back-up at PG?  Last year, it was LEPOLO and JONES alternating at PG, so no problem.

On media day Tara said she was not as worried about offense as she was about defense.  But probably 90% of the posts we make about our team concern offense--who will be point guard, can we get another three point shooter going, how to feed Cam and prevent her from being mobbed, etc. etc. etc. 

Most of the losses last year--with the exception of the game at USC and the Ole Miss game--had more to do with inadequate defense than offense.  Utah scored 84 against us and they will be better this year.

When we talk about who from the three freshmen may get major minutes, or we discuss whether Iriafen, Demetre, or Bosgana can become mainstays--the main issue will be who from among those six can play effective defense against teams like Utah?  It is highly unusual for a freshman to play that kind of defense that early.  Iriafen and Demetre have not distinguished themselves on defense particularly.  My impression is the Bosgana got a lot better on defense her sophomore year.  So she might be the best bet for major minutes.  But we need more from among the other 5.

To expand my point, on media day Jump came in looking incredibly fit, and then she talked about weight training over the summer and working hard to improve her defense.  It seems her focus was on defense, too, and that is beginning to sound like a theme.

It would not be a terrible shame if we have TWO freshmen ready to start!  How quickly they reach major minutes (and forget who "starts" under Tara's system--that is more or less meaningless) is going to depend on defense, I again predict.  But I am a broken record.
