The rest of the conference looks to be behind Stanford as of now.  Of course, lots will change between now and December, but I wouldn’t say things are as dire as they seemed a couple of weeks ago.

I definitely agree with this, but wanted to mention to BC that 247 and ESPN did some ratings updates and we are now at 6th in the Pac-12.

The ratings updates seem pretty minor.  The potentially bigger recruiting news is that Steve Wiltfong submitted a crystal ball predicting Fisher Anderson to Stanford.  Anderson has offers from a bunch of SEC schools including Auburn, Florida, and Georgia, so pulling him out of SEC country would be a nice win for Shaw and Stanford.

Outside of Georgia, I feel like our track record recently with kids from SEC country isn't great (see Ryan Johnson, Jack West, Andres Fox).

Very small sample size. You listed all the seniors/5ths from the non-Atlanta area Deep South (and they all happened to be from Alabama). We don't land guys from the entire region very much in the first place.

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 07-21-2021

Even if we don’t count Georgia or Texas (which is still the South), there are still plenty of counter examples. Justin Reid, Bryce Love, and JJAW were all in one class for example.

He committed to Purdue today.  Major loss in DL recruiting.

Ugh, I was going to joke about someone's "which of these three is not like the others" by saying only one doesn't have red and white as school colors. That's even less funny now.

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 07-22-2021

I’ve been following recruiting for two decades and never recall losing a recruit to Perdue. Never.

it is not often that we lose offerees to Purdue, but it happens.  I can think of 2 in the past 10 years, Austin Logan and TJ Sheffield.  we've lost 2 DL offerees in this cycle, JP Deeter and now Strickland.

I did not recall Sheffield or Logan.  Good memory!  I didn't count Deeter because he at one point self-reported an 18 ACT score and 3.5 GPA.  If he had a reasonable shot at admission, then my omission was in error.

if those scores are accurate, I am surprised we offered.  I'm not sure we've had an admission at those levels since Walsh II and that was 2 or 3 SAT recenterings ago.

I recall in that one crazy recruiting year when we had more decommits than commits, Harbaugh offered a guy with an 18 ACT and he accepted. Not surprisingly, he never made it to Stanford.

a Taggert offer to a player in Miami (Central or Northwestern) iirc, and you may have inflated the ACT number.  not sure if Harbs or staff had been through an admissions cycle yet.

on a more positive note, I recall Harbs going to bat for a player with lowish boards (not above low though) and supposedly asked for re-review twice on admissions decision.  admissions evidently reversed after meeting young man, his family etc.  young man graduated, later received his MBA while enjoying a long NFL career.  Pro Bowl, Walter Payton Man of Year for team etc.  good re-review from admissions.

4* OT Fisher Anderson commits to Stanford

New highest rated commit. We are now up to 5th in the PAC-12.  Now if only we can sign some defensive linemen.

RE: Class of 2022 - Spiny_Norman - 07-25-2021

How big a transition is it for an OT to move to OG? Including commitments from the class of 2022, Stanford has 7 scholarship OTs in the 3 most recent classes. In that same period, there is 1 scholarship OG.

The rule of thumb in general is only recruit Offensive Tackles, and move some of them to Guard or even Center. If you find a truly elite pure Guard - is good inside, can pull if you like that, and has short arms - recruit as a Guard, but all things being equal only recruit OTs if possible. They are moved inside all the time.

+1 to OF. That said, you can generally tell by heights most of the time. 6'7" or taller = tackle. 6'4" or shorter = interior. 6'5"/6'6" is usually the sweet spot of players that could play either way. (6'6" Barrett Miller was recruited as a tackle and will likely end his career as a 4-year starting guard. 6'6" David Bright played everywhere but center.)

Also note that on a typical high school team, the biggest/best lineman - aka the guy everyone is recruiting - is basically always playing blindside tackle for pretty self-explanatory reasons.

6'5" Lucas Heyer can convert to guard. We have a very good chance to get Jake Maikkula, who is actually being recruited by everyone as a guard. According to coach Heff, all interior linemen - regardless of whether they are actually centers - are learning how to snap the ball as well.

RE: Class of 2022 - OutsiderFan - 07-26-2021

IIRC, the year Josh Garnett was recruited, all members of that OL class had highlight video of them playing Tackle in High School, including Josh Garnett, who we all know was exclusively a Guard at Stanford.

RE: Class of 2022 - BostonCard - 07-26-2021

Worth noting that Andrus Peat was an all-PAC-12 offensive tackle at Stanford and got moved to guard in the nFL after struggling at tackle in New Orleans.  He’s now a three-time pro-Bowl guard, despite being 6’8”.

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 07-28-2021

For those in the know, what’s the range of expected open scholarships for the 2022 recruiting class?  Thanks!

FWIW, Maikkula looks like the type of player Stanford would be happy to add most years. I’m just curious how many spots are left since Shaw has piled up a bunch of recruits on offense and not too many on the other side of the ball.
