Also, Eli Manning came third in the Voldemort, but you gotta admit it was a pretty good guess.

Sam will be on tonight again, as well.  Using his Stanford education to it's fullest benefit, he's won over $50k.  And Sam's a Giants fan, who bought his first house in 2010, had his first child in 2012 and his second child in 2014.  Coincidence?  At least he's beating an A's fan...

OT: 1800’s baseball trivia - Giants - 03-04-2021

In honor of the beginning of another baseball season, I found a bit of trivia that I do not believe has been asked here...

Who hit the first grand slam in Major League history, what was the nickname of this player’s manager and what is the connection between his team and the Giants?

Hint:  The player is in the Hall of Fame

Yes, this set of questions is beyond the pale but the nickname aspect of the question is definitely a “fun find”.

RE: OT: 1800’s baseball trivia - BobK - 03-04-2021

Was it George “the mouse eater “
Philport?

Ask Phogge, he was there.

Baseball and Trivia - BobK - 03-05-2021

Ok one tread Sir. Giving it a try.
The Giants pitching have given up 3 runs in the last three games.

And trivia name the Giants starting lineup for the first game at Candlestick

RE: Baseball and Trivia - BostonCard - 03-05-2021

Thumbs up!

Way before my time, but the first game at what was then Pac Bell Park was on April 11 2000; it featured the Dodgers beating the Giants 6-5.  Chan Ho Park got the win, beating Kirk Reuter.  Barry Bonds doubled in Bill Meuler in the bottom of the first to score the first run in the new stadium.  Kevin Easter had the first home run in the new stadium, one of three home runs he had on the day.

Hard to believe that AT&T park is now coming up on its 21st birthday; it still feels "new".

RE: Baseball and Trivia - Phogge - 03-05-2021

CP: will give it a go since I was there, a win over the Cardinals I think.

P Sam Jones
C Bob Schmidt?
I McCovey
2 Don Blasingame
S Spencer
3 Davenport
L Cepeda
C Mays
R Willie Kirkland

And thanks BC. I bet you have a very orderly workspace and a very tidy garage.

And Bobbbbb, I was there loading magazines for my dad in ‘58 for the first Coast game at Seals Stadium. What was the Giants lineup that day?

I would guess...

Mays, CF
Haller, C
Kuenn, RF
Stanky, 2B
Dark, SS
Davenport, 3B
Cepeda, LF
McCovey, 1B
Marichal, P

And I think I read that the Giants have 29 or 30 pitchers in camp with MLB pitching experience.

RE: Baseball and Trivia - BobK - 03-05-2021

Phogge got all but SS. Eddie Bressoud. He became the long time coach for De Anza JC

RE: Baseball and Trivia - Phogge - 03-05-2021

Juan started his first MLB game in the middle of the disappointing 1960 season. Against whom? What was the result? Runs, hits? Who was the manager at the time?

RE: Baseball and Trivia - BobK - 03-05-2021

Juan’s first game. Phillies? One hitter
Bill Rigney still ?

RE: Baseball and Trivia - Phogge - 03-05-2021

Phillies yes. One hitter, yes. Rigney, no. Who got the hit?

Also you did not name the starting lineup for the first West Coast MLB game, April 1958.

RE: Baseball and Trivia - BobK - 03-05-2021

I named the 1958 seals stadium opener recently so I’m waiting for others.
Interesting 5 players of color started before Boston had their first. The first btw played with the Seals 1957

RE: Baseball and Trivia - BobK - 03-05-2021

Sheehan the Giants manager. 2nd worse in SF history

RE: MLB thread - Phogge - 03-05-2021

Correct. He was a Horace Stoneham drinking buddy and Horace wanted to give him a shot. Interestingly a couple of years later Horace wanted a pitcher thrown into a big trade at the last minute because he liked to drink too. That pitcher participated in one of the greatest games in WS history.

I'll let somebody else name the first Red Sox black player. He didn't appear in many Seals games.

The first black player on the Red Sox was Pumpsie Green from El Cerrito High School. Brother of Cornell Green of the Dallas Cowboys, also an ECHS grad. At ECHS, Pumpsie was Ernie Broglio's catcher.

Go Gauchos!

Excellent Terry.
