Why do you think SF screwed the pooch? You've been saying forever that Jimmy G is no good. Plus, those suggesting that there was a robust market for Jimmy G were in fantasyland, based on his contract. And when Jimmy decided to get the surgery, he sealed his fate (and he had to know that). That's okay - he'd rather sign with a team that looks to be best option for him (based on many factors), as opposed to having no control over where he would be traded.
BTW, Indy might be very good with Ryan - but I'll bet Atlanta is a lot better with Mariota. Will be interesting to watch.

Not fantasyland at all, JG would have been traded for (at worst) a third round pick (with possible escalators) absent his shoulder surgery.
I'm not sure how SF could have avoided this situation, thus I don't agree that they erred.

Disagree that they ever would have received a third rounder with escalators. Hes very limited. Plus he’s hurt a lot. Add that everyone knew the Niners had to trade him, and the value wasn’t there. I’m assuming (admittedly may be wrong) they could have dumped him for a 4th or 5th round pick. Maybe they still can. But if not, just cut the loss and release him.

Makes more sense to trade him, if possible. If they cut him, they are on the hook for $7.5 million injury benefit. And I may be wrong, but I seem to recall there was another $1.4 million expense associated with cutting Garoppolo

Thanks. I understand that a lot of things kind of snowballed. I suspect that in the end, they will release him. They need the CAP room.

I agree that a release is the most likely outcome. From the Niners perspective it was a matter of everything that could go wrong did go wrong from the shoulder injury to the falling of QB dominos.

If they release him they are on the hook for $7.5 unless he signs a deal elsewhere for more; in which case it drops to $1.4.
Obviously they will continue to try and trade him. But there aren’t (m)any suitors at this point. And I don’t know that there will be come July. If they can’t deal him, I don’t see that they have any choice but to release him. That would free up at least $17.5 million. And they have Bosa and Deebo’s extensions to deal with.

I guess I may be dreaming but didn’t your injured QB just get you to the NFC Championship?
You have lost a few guys but none of them are irreplaceable and you improve your CB position. The new slot corner ( Moseley) is a real corner who will play both positions.
You retain the best combo WR/RB in football and a top 5 TE. An almost 1,000 yard RB who missed six games. A Mike LB who played like an All Pro in the second half of the season. Two other LB’s who are dynamic.
You do have questions. Kinlaw? Left guard? Another edge? Safety? But every team has questions.
Now you entrust your season to a kid with very little experience. A possible career breaking decision for your coach and GM. Big dice roll.
RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread -

Exactly how do you propose to pay Samuel and Bosa for the extension to their respective contracts? SF needs the money from ridding themselves of JG’s contract to cover those deals.

JG did nothing in the playoffs. That was true in ‘19 as well.
Lynch and Shanahan made that dice roll last year when they traded two first rounders. They have already tied their fortunes to Lance.
And Phogge, we simply disagree on JG’s value. I don’t think he’s very good. I think the lack of interest shown suggests that most GMs don’t think he’s very good either.
As to Bosa and Deebo, I think Niners have to clear space to do the extensions.
RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread -
Phogge - 03-23-2022
The lack of interests is mostly because he can't throw until July and then who knows?
All Jimmy does is win and his locker room presence is positive.
Lance starts twice and gets hurt. You guys love the hype. You have tasted the Koolaid. They are entrusting a Super Bowl caliber team to an unproven kid who probably needs a couple of years to mature. And in a couple of years all your key guys are older. Kittle hasn't played a full season yet. Think he gets injury free as he ages? Deebo takes a pounding. The rookie RB misses six games. And you have no number ones until 2024.
I will eat crow if Lance is a superstar in the next two years. What I expect is three or four bomb TD's, a bunch of overthrows and a bushel of picks. Throw in a couple of injuries and a failed coach and GM down the line. They have mortgaged the future on a 21 year old.
So is Lance Dan Marino or is he Gary Beban? Who TF knows.

I think they'll trade. Even a 2026 7th round pick. They're on the hook for about $8.5 million if they don't trade him.

How many QBs have been to the conference championship twice in the last three years? Mahomes, Rogers and Garropolo. How many have been to the conference championship
and the Superbowl at least once each in the last three years? Mahomes and Garropolo.

But a trade means that Jimmy G's contract (i.e., $25M next season) is still in effect, right?. Why would anyone pay that? You can sign him in open market, after release, for a LOT less.
I happen to think Jimmy G, when healthy, is a very good QB; however, I would not pay the guy $25M next season. No way. I figure Jimmy will sign up as some team's backup QB for a year at $5-$7M, and then we'll see. If starter gets injured our otherwise is out, Jimmy may shine (again, assuming good health). Or, he could hold a clip board all year and make very good coin for such work.
I see a release by 'Niners; no trade, unless there is a way to re-work the K for new team as part of that trade (no clue if that's possible or plausible).
RE: Giants/Niners 2022 thread -
BostonCard - 03-23-2022
I assume that as part of any deal, there would be a contract extension/renegotiation.
The reason to trade, as opposed to wait for free agency, is if you are concerned that there will be other suitors. Of course, that doesn’t seem likely, but as a potential destination, you’d have to at least Susa out the landscape.
Release and sign by another team at a discount with heavy incentives seems the most likely, no?

Niners resign Jordan Willis, Dontae Johnson and Jeff Wilson. And sign free agent Kerry Hyder who had eight sacks for SF in 2020 filling in for Bosa.
Now have five edge players: Bosa, Omenehu, Ebukam, Willis and Hyder. Wilson should be primary backup for Mitchell.
