RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - M T - 11-26-2022

I was thinking about the almost non-stop games for Stanford through the end of this month: 10 games in 24 days, including 2 road trips.  That's a WNBA-level schedule.

In 2022-2023, Stanford has 31 regular season games, and likely 3 PAC-12 tournament games, and a potential for 6 NCAA tournament games, giving a potential 40 games.  (For comparison, So. Carolina has only 29 regular season games; UConn has 31 regular season games.)

In 2021-2022, Stanford played 36 games, one short of playing in the NCAA championship game.  (Potential: 37)
In 2020-2021 (COVID-impacted), Stanford won the NC, playing only 33 games when 4 were cancelled.  (Potential: 37)
In 2019-2020 (COVID-shortened), Stanford played 33 games, but the potential for 6 more NCAA tournament games were cancelled. (Potential: 39)
In 2016-2017, Stanford played 38 games, one short of playing in the NCAA championship game. (Potential: 39)
In 2009-2010, Stanford played 38 games, losing the NC game. (Potential: 38)
In 1999-2000, Stanford played 33 games, losing after the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney. (Potential: 37)
In 1989-1990, Stanford played 33 games, winning the NC game. (Potential: 33)

Playing a game gives experience but takes some toll on the body of the players, and it also takes time away from classes.  The NCAA has continued to stretch the allowed number of games in the season.

It appears that maybe S. Carolina has chosen not to play as many games as possible.  I wonder if that will be an advantage.

The game in November is not the national championship game.  It is at the time of the year that a team is developing game conditioning and honing its tools.  I have no problem with pushing the players endurance now, seeing how (and having them see how) they play when tired, especially against a top team.

Excellent point, MT.  And it fits with everything we know about Tara.  For many, many years it has been clear that Tara's March teams evolve substantially from her November teams.  And testing them early and then making corrections and lineup changes is what she does.  She is a developmental coach--in the sense of TEAM development.  I rarely have been able to guess how she is going to develop the team, but then along comes another final-four 30+ win season like clockwork.  There have been seasons she has achieved that with far, far less talent than she has now.  In Tara we trust.  That said, I am scratching my head at how little the bench got used against SCAR.  But she knows what she is doing.  That was not some mental lapse on her part.

SCar cancelled a game this season against BYU due to the incident at BYU involving the Duke WVB team playing there and hearing racist remarks, so they would have one more game on this season's schedule unless they added a game. Not sure if they did. It was supposed to be their season opener.

Agree that the bench was not used well against SCar.  I don't think expecting players to play 35 minutes or so a game for one particular game should be an issue generally. We have such a good, deep bench though, that what they gain with maybe some extra energy late vs a possible slight drop off in performance from the bench would probably be worth it.  Depends on how they use the bench too.  I would prefer one sub at a time if the sub has not played much previous seasons or against a team like SCar.  Like put in Bosgana for Jump for a bit with the rest of the starters still in, see how she does, stuff like that.  They tried Demetre very briefly but that's it.

Chimera brings up a very good point.  We don't really get a good feel for the bench if there's a CTT-style hockey-line change and the 2nd stringers end up playing with each other.  And of course in garbage time when our 2nd or 3rd team is playing against the opponents' bench.  I think it's a much better measure when the sub gets quality time with the starters.  Those are the kinds of things I think November is for.

Has anyone seen Missy this season? I totally expected her to do the South Carolina game (being on a national broadcast and all). Looking through several box scores, I haven't seen her listed.

Yes, unfortunately.  She was working the Oregon vs. Iowa game.  Made some, expected, bad calls.  On such call drew the ire of Caitlyn Clark.

Some numbers that caught my attention:

Emma-Nnopu has more offensive rebounds (10) than Cameron Brink (9)

On a per-35 minute basis:
Nivar, a combo-guard, averages 7.3 rebounds;
HIriafen averages 7 offensive rebounds;

Betts: 26.5 points, 18 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 67% shooting--and only 1.1 fouls
Bosgana: 19.5 points and 9 rebounds

Michele Voepel's ESPN power rankings for the week are out, with Stanford still #2, and UCAL / Utah / Arizona all in there.  U Conn is now #3.

I'm surprised how strong UConn has looked this season given how much talent they lost.  They've had a challenging schedule and have handled 4 good-to-very-good opponents (Texas, NC State, Duke and Iowa) relatively easily (though Iowa lead at the half).  They've done this despite losing more than 60% of their scoring and 54% of their rebounding from last year's NCAA tournament team.  Those losses also included four top 5 recruits (two #1s, one #2, and one #5.)  They added a #4 and #5 to the roster, but their #5 is injured for the season and the #4 has only been averaging 10 minutes (and 3 points) a game so far.  As expected, Azzi Fudd and Aaliyah Edwards have stepped up but former MAAC player of the year Lou Lopez Sénéchal, has been a real difference maker too.  She's 5th in minutes, but 2nd in points per game (16.6).  Their next big game is against Notre Dame on Sunday. We'll see if they can keep the streak going.

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - Spiny_Norman - 11-28-2022

Let's check in on something that we have been tracking for a while - Tara vs. Geno career wins.

At the start of the season, Tara had 1157 career wins vs. 1149 for Geno.

Stanford's record so far is 8-1 vs. 5-0 for UConn. So Tara is 11 wins ahead of Geno for now. And she is only 37 wins behind Coach K for most all time wins men's or women's hoops.

Tara has just achieved another milestone. Stanford's AP ranking this week is the 618th appearance for Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer, tying the late Pat Summitt for most all-time.

I hate UConn and always root against them but I have been impressed by their team without Bueckers.  I think it’s a 3 way race for the title this year between South Carolina, UConn and us.  After those 3 I think there is more of a drop off to the other top 10 teams.

UCLA gets a measuring stick game tomorrow vs South Carolina in Columbia. But they might get a big break. Aliyah Boston injured her ankle over the weekend and may not be ready. Coach Staley said that her availability will be a game time decision.

Over the first nine games I have been very impressed by Talana Lepolo at PG but I have also been impressed with Jzaniya Harriel when she has played PG. I compared them as if they had each played 35 minutes per game. The results:

Lepolo 5.96 Pts; 2.61 rebounds; 8.0 assists; 1.41 steals; 1.41 TOs; 0 Blocks; 2.68 A/TO
Harriel 6.45 Pts; 5.99 rebounds; 4.61 assists; 1,84 steals; 1.84 TOs; 0.46 Blocks; 2.50 A/TO

They actually match up fairy evenly. Harriel is a better scorer and a much better rebounder. Lepolo is significantly better is assists, although her assist to turnover margin is only slightly better. Harriel is slightly better on steals and she has one block to none for Lepolo. But, statistics only go so far.

Watching them both play, I would say they both handle the ball well and they both push the pace well. Lepolo seems to have slighlty better court vision. Her weaknesses are a reluctance to shoot and she does not handle taller guards too well. Harriel is a willing shooter, perhaps too willing. If she played a lot I think she would hit about 1/3 of her threes. Lepolo might do as well if she would shoot. Harriel is a better defender and rebounder. They could both be very good players and the jury is still out on just how good they can be. Lepolo has played about three times as many minutes as Harriel and I would say that is not justified by the numbers. I would like to see both of them play half a game at PG until one significantly outperforms the other. Obviously, Tara sees it differently. I can only guess that Lepolo has better practices than Harriel. One could also include Nivar in the mix. She has played a little PG but not enough to really evaluate her at that position. If she played PG my guess is that she would be a good scorer and defender but have fewer assists than either Lepolo or Harriel and more turnovers. She is probably more of a 2 guard.

I thought this might be a down year for the Pac-12, but Utah, Arizona, Oregon, and UCLA all seem better than I expected.  It will be very difficult for us to get through the entire Pac 12 without a loss as we did a year ago, even though we may have the most talent.  The Utah beat-down of Oklahoma was particularly eye-opening.  Eager to see how UCLA does with South Carolina, and how Arizona does with Baylor.

Then we can all start beating up on each other.

My gut tells me all four of those teams are better than anyone else we will play in the pre-season other than South Carolina--although I might have to eat my words if Gonzaga, Creighton, or Tennessee give us a bad time.  In any case, we want our Pac-12 opponents to win against out-of-conference opponents to improve our own NET.

Interesting comparison re the stats, but I think you also have to take into account which players on the other team are on the court when Lepolo or Harriel is playing. Lepolo is there as the start of the game when the opponents are freshest and strongest, as all as all being starters. Harriel gets into the game later and is often facing subs from the other team, as well as people who may not be fresh while she is, coming right off the bench. Still, I agree that Harriel is showing that she's got possibilities. From being really concerned about our PG position, it's starting to look as if we have a bit of depth and options.

Interesting.  I imagine Notre Dame will take over a 1 from UConn given today's results.  Other than South Carolina and us, everything seems pretty topsy turvy this year.
