RE: End of Pac12? - BostonCard - 11-18-2022

My guess is that the next time someone selects "less money" over any other concern with regards to collegiate athletics will be the first, which is how we are where we are.  I fully expect the Regents to add up the numbers and basically say "we can't afford to say no".

I don't know the specifics of what UCLA's media rights are worth, but it is a fact that UCLA staying in the Pac adds more money to the Pac's revenue potential that will help Cal. Combined with the travel concerns and lukewarm alumni support, plus people higher up the org chart not wanting a precedent for the their direct reports getting them into unapproved contracts, there is reason for them to say no.

This would be ugly, but it is possible for the UC President to contact the Big Ten and say unless you take Cal, we're not allowing UCLA to leave.  I don't know, but if UCLA doesn't go to B1G, would USC want to go?

Oregon and Washington's boards could require Oregon State and Washington State to be included if they were to be invited to B1G too.

But yes, it's always about money in some form or fashion.

RE: End of Pac12? - Canalejas - 11-19-2022

The desire for Berkeley to not appear to be a notch below UCLA has to be worth something to the regents, no?

RE: End of Pac12? - Canalejas - 12-14-2022

Apparently, the UC regents will be announcing their decision on UCLA's conference alignment today.

FWIW, the agenda has them meeting right about now.

Pretty weak but not surprising. Nobody wants to rock the boat, even though public opinion generally and more specifically from UCLA alums and athletes has been overwhelmingly against the move.

RE: End of Pac12? - 81alum - 12-14-2022

Wow, reading that plan, what a sell-out.  Basically they will require that the student athletes all get distance learning to minimize their travel.  I presume this means they will be away from campus for days on end--perhaps a road trip for two weekends.  Shades of Stanford WBB and Covid.  They will also throw money in for nutrition, tutors, mental health, etc.  It is guilt-money.  Rather than avoid subjecting their students to this terrible idea, they will try to repair them.

Well, it is not quite the way we expected, but we finally have a university that says "being a student athlete means never having to attend class."

Quote:6. UCLA will work with the UCLA Division of the Academic Senate to request that faculty provide appropriate accommodations and access to remote courses and online materials to student-athletes, and will engage Student Affairs in facilitating conversations between student-athletes and faculty members;

I know many of the B1G WVB teams fly charter.  Will UCLA Olympic sports all fly charter back east.  If so, the travel won't be all that bad.

RE: End of Pac12? - Canalejas - 12-14-2022

I was hoping for a different result.  But there it is. My favorite annual matchup is ending.

I wonder how many of Ohio State's 30-something sports fly charter vs commercial.

UCLA and SC. So five minutes ago.

If Clemenza can hide the gun I say kill 'em both.

Wouldn’t that be admitting that the Pac-12 is notch below the Big 10?

Given that advantages of the PAC-12 in terms of rivalries and travel, it would be unwise for the Regents to undermine the PAC-12 further in this way.

It is amazing how many people equate money with better (even many on this board).

Stanford did not hire the most expensive coach it could find; it hired the coach who was the best fit. Stanford and the Pac-12 can have a satisfying future while living on a budget.

Very well said. How successful UCLA AD will in getting cooperation with the faculty (any faculty) will be interesting, though with the development of online courses over the years even prior to COVID is more and more common.

University of California Los Angeles = University of Phoenix. What a great future for their student athletes. . . .

Well, the money is one thing. And we don't have to say that it makes one conference better than the other, but that's one factor that's hard to ignore.

There's also the fact that the Big Ten will be the new "Conference of Champions." And the implicit endorsement the LA schools are giving that conference over this one by moving to it.  They are the poachers.  We are the poached.

Already after today's decision there are Bruins crowing about how this makes them the clear state flagship. The regents had to know that kind of feeling would emerge.

Sounds like someone is suffering from an inferiority complex….

RE: End of Pac12? - OutsiderFan - 12-15-2022

Hard to judge who looks more pathetic and weak, the Pac-12 or the UC Regents. To some degree, the Pac-12 didn't have a whole lot of control over the USC and UCLA situation. But the UC Regents lost total control of UCLA and allowed a member school to clown it.  The "UCLA may have to pay Cal $2M-$5M annually," is so pathetic and feeble, it's just embarrassing for the regents and Cal, and by extension, the Pac-12.

One thing I have to say about the athletes at USCLA having to engage in all this travel. Among the primary values of going away to college is the ON CAMPUS experience.  If USCLA athletes have to spend multiple weeks on the road, it greatly takes away from why you go to college in the first place.
I'm interested to see how schools recruiting against USCLA do when time to experience on campus life is considered a priority for a recruit.

RE: End of Pac12? - OutsiderFan - 12-15-2022

On the Cal Rivals board it is being reported that UCLA may have to pay Cal as much as $10M annually, depending on how the media rights shake out.

RE: End of Pac12? - dabigv13 - 12-15-2022

Seems like it would be unfair for one Pac-x school to get paid off like this while the rest of the conference suffers, not that there seems to be anything the Pac-x can really do about it.

Again this seems like a scared BOT who doesn't want to rock the boat taking the simplest path, not unlike our own BOT and the MTL situation.

On the one hand are the overwhelming preference of UCLA alums, students, and athletes, over a hundred years of history and rivalry, student-athlete welfare, travel expenses, plain common sense, and on the other, more money for the athletic department on the next TV deal, leaving aside the impacts to UCB or the UC system as a whole. Maybe I'm too close to the situation to see it clearly but seems like the BOT is really making a poor decision here not to exercise their oversight.
