RE: 2023 Niners thread - Nan3cy - 01-28-2024

In my mind, the 49ers have played two good (well, today, great) halves in the past two games. Maybe (???) they can put a complete game together in the SB. Probably that’s what it will take.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - CompSci87 - 01-28-2024

Wow, I'm down with COVID this weekend and gave up on the game before halftime. I went to bed and slept a few hours, and just woke up and checked the final score. Amazed the Niners turned it around! Happily the rest of the game is still on my DVR.

Yeah.  The halftime score in both games was 24-7.  Amazing….

Campbell played the pro version of Dan Lanning.  I get the idea of going for it on 4th down but there is a fine line between aggressive play calling and hubris.  Both Lanning and Campbell crossed the line in their respective biggest game of the season and it cost them dearly….

Mahomes is no Goff (the modern version of Steve DeBerg), it will take a monumental effort by the 49ers to secure #6.

Goff is a long ways from DeBerg.  He’s taken two teams to NFC Championship and one to SB.  I get he went to Cal. But geez…..He didn’t make two bonehead decisions.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - 82 Card - 01-28-2024

Apparently one of the Detroit players thought the game was over at the half too:
Camera catches Lions player waving goodbye to 49ers fans before heartbreaking loss

I have to admit that I thought it was over then too. With the Niner line getting beat both ways, I didn't see any chance of a turnaround. Nice to be wrong.

Another reversal of ‘57 as that gamebsupposedly Niners taunted Detroit at half.

Revenge of 1957 is complete and another as I was yelling No Preston Reilly before the on side kick

Me, too!  Any 49er fan that was around for that flashed to Reilly.  As a former neighbor of Brodie, that one still hurts.  If JB had made a SB he might be in Hall.  If he won an SB, he would be in Hall.

Anyone with an insightful eye know what the 49ers changes to lead to the turnaround?  Or did bounces just start going their way?  Because the first half versus the third quarter were night and day.

A telling stat from ESPN….

Goff was 0-8 when pressured.  During his college days and now as a pro, he is great when he has a clean pocket but he gets antsy when pressured.  To avoid being called “just good enough to lose”, you have to be effective under duress.

Journey played "Don't Stop Believing" live at halftime. . . .

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 01-29-2024

In the second half of the NFCCG last night, Brock Purdy:

- threw for 150+ yards
- rushed for 45+ yards
- completed 80% of his passes
- averaged 10.0+ yards per rush
- had 0 turnovers

No other NFL QBs in the last 30 years have done all of that in a single half (regular season or playoffs.

No, you don’t.  How many QB’s have taken two different teams to Championship games?   Or, even one to an SB.  Most never get there.

Goff is not mobile.  That’s a big limitation.  But he’s won.  And btw, had his coach not made bad decisions - and perhaps if his fourth down pass in 3d Q isn’t dropped, he probably is playing in his second SB.

A local kid.  And a darn good NFL QB.

Yes he is. He played Purdy well, but not well enough. . . .

Think he's gotten a bad rap, similar to that of Alex Smith. Doesn't seem to have the grittiness, though. . . .

I don’t buy into “ifs”.  They are part of every athletic competition.  The outcome is all that matters…

for the record, Lex argued one "had" and one "if', not plural "ifs". . . .

ATTN thin-skins: This is off-topic and behind a paywall, but I am a life-long Niner fan who just became a Swifty. Here's why:

RE: 2023 Niners thread - Mick - 02-02-2024

Apparently former 49ers third round selection QB CJ Beathard is indirectly responsible for delivering Brock Purdy. When Beathard signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020, San Francisco was given a compensatory pick in the 2022 NFL draft...said pick being a 7th round selection, which the 49ers used to select Mr. Purdy.

Good stuff, Mick.  Here is a bit more on SF’s compensatory selection history.

Apparently the Niners are going to need it. Looks like they're going to lose Kubiak to the Saints as their new OC. Yet another pick, and more brain drain.

When you are successful you lose assistants. Shanahan is about as respected as they come. Along those lines, it was interesting to hear Steve Wilks comments. He said, without prompting, that the 49ers are by far the best organization he’s ever been with.

I’ve heard that Griese will get elevated to passing offense coordinator and Kubiak’s brother from assistant QB coach to QB coach.

Man the week between championship game in the Super Bowl drags! Tough task to beat Mahomes. But I’m just glad I get to watch the Niners again. This has been about as fun as season as I can recall. It’s just a very very fun team to watch.
