I saw Clardy play in high school. She was successful driving and had a nice mid-range shot. She shot three-pointers but they weren't always falling for her. The one thing that was consistent through all three games I saw was her commitment to defense. Hard to say how high school performance will translate at the next level, but I'm looking forward to seeing her on the court.

10 deep is a lot, especially with a roster of only 12, where one is a sophomore (former?) walkon and three are freshmen. It bodes well for freshman playing time.

The Kiki interview indicates she was working on her three point and high post shots, and she expected a lot of High-Low between her and Brink. Sounds like just what the doctor (Doctor Tara) ordered.

I'm not sure if this was already commented on but Tara did mention at the media day press conference how other coaches were talking to her players during the season, trying to recruit them. I wonder who she is referencing and if it is one of the coaches who benefited (IE Cori Close, Courtney Banghart, Mark Campbell)

I don't recall seeing or hearing this. Honestly, not surprising. Oregon is very shady when it comes to recruiting so yes Campbell (who is now HC at TCU) being a culprit is likely. I do wonder about other coaches. I could also see Arizona (with so so so many transfers in and out), maybe USC - just speculating.

Looking forward to the Saturday, October 28th. open practice @ 9:45am (doors open at 9:30am) and get a first hand look at our freshmen.

As stated before, we sure need one or more of them to step up and quickly.

I haven't seen anything of Clardy at all but from the descriptions I've read, if she develops into RosGO 2.0 I would be extremely happy. We always need a defensive stopper who can also pitch in on O. I still remember it was Ros who drove the lane, sank those FTs and beat Tenn back in the day.

In the opinion of NCAA.com, Hannah Jump is the 2nd best shooter in the country. No surprise, Caitlin Clark is #1.

No other P12 players on the top 10 list, but there are 2 Gonzaga players. Stanford plays the Zags in Spokane in December.

Fun trivia from today, Erica McCall played as a practice player in the scrimmage she looked good!

Tonight's event is the Buck Cardinal Club preseason reception, starting with the open practice. Followed with the seniors and juniors on a panel, being interviewed, talking to us in the stands. After, there will be a talk from Tara and a reception.

Oops. The panel is not seniors and juniors. It's Talana, Cam, Hannah, Kiki, Brooke. An omen of the starting lineup?

Two updates from last night. 1) In the panel discussion (Mary Murphy was the moderator, asking questions of each of the five), there was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement from the players, very positive comments. I thought Brooke's response to the question of what her goal was for the season -- at first, sort of formulaic, like win the pac 12, national championship (which was what Cam had said), but then she said something that I thought was really significant, and was missing in the team in the latter part of last year -- she said, have fun, just enjoy playing, have fun. It they go into the games with that attitude, this team can do much. 2) at the reception, Tara was asked about the freshmen, and she went on and on about them, all three of them. Interesting was her positive comments re Agara, who has received the least press of the three. She was very high on her, as well as Clardy and Ogden -- but she also said that they are still making the HS to college transition. All signs are that they may receive significant playing time, but none will be starting any time soon.

Looks like Cam's ankle injury several weeks ago is more serious than some suggested. Is she doubtful for the exhibition game on Nov. 1st. or is it day-to-day? Not the way to start this season with your best player on the sidelines or playing limited minutes. And don't forget, Indiana is not that far away.

I have wondered the same about Cam. Last night, she was walking with no apparent limp Not in a boot, no obvious ankle wrap. I hope it's just Tara being super cautious to make sure she is fully healed before playing. No answers from Tara last night re Cam's status

Just saw the news, Cam is preseason 1st team all American, third in the voting. Clark was a unanimous choice, followed by Reese. Also Bueckers. Holmes and Kitley tied for fifth

It’s worth repeating an observation that last night’s MC, sportscaster Mary Murphy, shared with the assembly of boosters, “I hope you realize what you have here in your Stanford Women’s Basketball program — a group of players and coaches that is easily one of the best basketball programs in the country. This team has had many more highs than lows over the years. They deserve our highest respect!”
And she’s right. Let’s appreciate what they bring to our lives, it’s the moment to moment process that really counts!

I happened to meet Hannah Jump's boyfriend's parents at the reception. Very nice friendly folks. They think the world of Hannah. I heard from them that Hannah had surgery on her right shoulder just after last season. It went very well and she's now pain free -- apparently unlike last season.

WBB 2023-2024 Season - stopandpop - 11-02-2023

Perhaps there were comments about last night's exhibition game against Dominican, but maybe they were on another thread.

In any event, I came away with several positives and a couple of negatives.

First, the positives in no particular order. Obviously, the opponent was inferior, talent wise, and lacked the size to compete with the Cardinal on the inside, but our team played with a cohesiveness- with excellent spacing, tempo and passing that I did not see in the scrimmage. I was particularly impressed with Kiki's positioning for both her offensive and defensive rebounding. That kind of positioning did not seem to be there last season.

Especially impressed with Chloe- Quicker and more athletic than Talana- 3 steals and only 1 turnover in almost 23 minutes. Handles the ball very well. Multiple times she got into the opponent's face on defense, strong on those fast breaks, and poised! Although she missed a little 10' jumper in the key, I loved how she stopped on a dime, pulled up and shot that ball. Certainly has things to learn, but Chloe may be the best of our 3 freshmen right now and she can definitely help us.

Nunu, undersized @ 6'2, but strong and physical. Yes, she played against smaller players, but I loved her aggressiveness around the basket. She'll need to learn through experience how to be effective against taller players, but she showed us (on one play) her ability to drive the ball and finish.

Tara is making the right choice to start Bosgana. She plays with much more confidence than when she did coming off the bench. What I liked about her last night was (her) choosing to drive to the hoop and scoring. She has a big, physical body and uses it better than her first two seasons. On defense, she's long and disruptive. Got 3 steals, 4 assists (she was actually looking for other teammates!!), and only 1 TO.

As typical of last season and the season before that, Tara pulled Brink early in the 3rd. quarter (14:14 min. playing time) and she never came back. I'm sure part of the reason was to protect her from an unnecessary injury. The other part was giving others more playing time. There was a brief moment when Tara had Brink playing with all 3 freshmen and a reserve. I wish we could have seen more of that.

Two disappointments- 1) For 3 quarters, we played excellent team basketball and actually looking for opportunities to free up people on the interior to get the pass and score with the 3-pointer as the 2nd. or sometimes a 3rd. option. In the 4th. quarter, Dominican outscored us 21-15. Yes, we had our subs in there, but what irked me was we stopped playing as a team and kept hoisting up 3-pointers that missed and Dominican would come down, run really good plays and score on us, again and again. They were the aggressors and put our players on our heels, much to the delight of Dominican's large fan base that was at Maples. For the life of me, why Tara allowed that to continue is beyond me. I'm wondering was that deliberate, choosing not to run up the score but give the visitors something to cheer about?

My 2nd. disappointment was Demetre. In the scrimmage against the men (who were tall and certainly more athletic than Dominican), Brooke displayed that beautiful turn around jumper that went in more often than not. Last night against players 3-5" shorter than her, every turnaround was forced or taken off-balance. In 21:25 minutes, she went an embarrassing 2-10 and 1-5 beyond the arc. Tara loves Demetre, playing her over 21 minutes- and leaving her in despite her poor offensive performance against small defenders. I was hoping for more because she is one of the first off the bench and we need Brooke to be more than a set 3-point shooter this season.

Certainly more positives than negatives last night. Hawaii will be several steps up in terms of competition, and then comes Indiana.
