I DON'T understand why Yu is not given more opportunity. She was the starting setter to start the year and I think most of us would agree the offense and setting looks much more fluid when she's in the game running the offense. Parks is incredibly inconsistent.

Kirsch and Harvey found the solution to serving against a weak team. Just get the serve in the court and let the opponent make mistakes.

Kirsch with a very good reaction and dig to force a timeout from WF.
So many WVB teams have a player from Serbia.
Once again Kirsch realized the solution to serving against a weak team.
Tim in the gym. Hambly said Sidney didn't say anything about him coming to the game. She is low-key like her father.
WF falling apart again.

We started the season in a 6-2, so both Yu and Parks started the season setting. As we switched to a 5-1, Parks got the nod over Yu as the sole setter.

Hambly to start the season, “Yeah, it looks like she’ll set,” Hambly said of Yu. “I think she’s our best pure setter right now."
I didn't like the 6-2 so going with one setter has proven to be the better option. If we alternate Blyshov and Kurt at OH, why not alternate setters from time to time. This team's ceiling is not that high in the postseason without really good setting. Right now, it's way too inconsistent. Will see how the next couple weekends go with SMU, Pitt, and UNC. I hope Parks proves me wrong. If setting stays inconsistent, we could realistically go 0-3 in those games despite being at home.

I didn't see much of today's match, just reading about it. The only rationale I've heard for sticking with Parks is that Hambly considers her the setter of the future. And I guess he's OK with her learning on the job.
At least three of Stanford's pre-conference opponents were upset today: Texas, Florida, and Missouri. That hurts the RPI.

Pitt survives and beats Carolina in 5 on the road. Pitt and Stanford are at the top of the ACC each with one loss. Next couple weekends are big.

As a team, Stanford is hitting an even .300, which is down a bit from last year's .314 but on par to how we hit as a team in 2022 (.297), and better than 2021 (.281), which was Kami Miner's freshman year. Now, of course, effective hitting is not just on the setter; you have to have good hitters, and an underrated aspect of effective setting (and thus hitting) is good passing, and the ability to hit out of system effectively. And, of course, the opponents get a say based on how good they are defensively. Still, we are a long way from a crisis hitting.
My hypothesis is that we have been more effective with the middle blockers and less effective with the pin hitters. That's borne out by the stats; our two most effective hitters are Andrew (.437) and Sayer (.414), substantially better than two years ago when Francis (.368) and Vicini (.411) were the MBs or last year with Andrew (.363) and Francis (.401). That's interesting to me because traditionally, the setter to MB connection requires both to be on the same page and can only really be executed well with good timing. On the other hand, two of our pin hitters have taken a step backwards. Rubin (.295 vs. .283 last year) has been fine, but both Harvey (0.234 vs. .290) and Kurt (.219 vs. .294) have taken big steps back compared to last year. The struggles at the pin hitting positions are more obvious, but it is really tough to say that the offense, as a whole, is much worse of this year with new setters than it was last year with a senior all-ACC setter.

- Andrew, Harvey and Blyashov all very good today, though I would like to see Blyashov a bit more active blocking. (0 blocks).
- Sayer was good blocking but just slightly off hitting .100.
- Kirsch very good serving and some good defense.
- Rubin looks not completely right to me. Really quiet today - .133 hitting, fifth on the team in digs with only 4, no aces, 3 service errors and only 6 points which was 6th (behind even Parks). I am somewhat concerned. She often has libero level digs for one comparison, and she has looked off all week. NC St was .128 hitting though her other stats were better. Maybe she really needed a full day off vs. Clemson.
- Parks was erratic, but horrible is harsh to my eyes and she served well with some nice offense of her own.

it appears to me that Rubin has to just pass over more out of system 3rd touches and it shows in her pct. not necessarily on setters but due to 1st or 2nd touch.

I agree at times that Parks setting looks horrid. And when Yu is in the offense appears to run smoother. It is obvious she is naturally a better pure setter at this point. However, when you go back and watch the games when Yu was setting, you start to notice that her involvement of the middles is much lower than when Parks sets. Looking back over them just now, when Yu sets, the pins average almost triple the attempts individually as the middles individually. Then when you look at the stats when Parks is setting, the middles often times get just barely under the attempts individually as the pins individually -- it is much more spread around.
Let's be real about our pins -- they are not power pins that are going to take over a match like Torrey Stafford, Olivia Babcock, etc. And they also at times struggle against a big block. So, while Yu sets more purely and it looks nicer, our offense does tend to do better with Parks (even if quite ugly at times), as she runs a more balanced offense, which allows our pins to score more efficiently (even if they are having to tip sometimes due to poor sets) due to the block on the other side having to stay true with our middles. When Yu is setting, the other teams' middles cheat and make our pins less effective (while our middles are already not being utilized).
I think the bigger problem we have is at the DS level. Pringle is just ... aye. I have slowly become more fond of Blyashov over Kurt in general, but given that Pringle does not play when Blyashov is playing, I strongly prefer Blyashov just for that reason. And it is just not passing, it is floor defense. Outside Rubin and Etzler, our floor D is really rather atrocious, to be honest.

I think Kurt has also started playing more in the back row. She was fourth on the team against NC State with 7 digs. I know it that her passing has been suspect, so still maybe more of a reason to favor Blyashov.

Thanks for the excellent observations. Bostoncard, as usual that was an effective use of stats to make your points. By the eye test, Parks' setting technique and location is not good; particularly to the pins. It may not show up in the stats. Many of the teams we have played recently are simply not good at covering tips and roll shots. That's where we're getting many points from the pins and driving up hitting stats. Also our non-conference schedule was not as tough as previous years.
Your point about the MB stats is solid. I still prefer Yu, but at this stage in the season there's no way Hambly would make a permanent setting change even if Parks had some bad matches.
Stanford remains at #5 in the AVCA poll. Texas at #4.
